It's usually a 63a fuse for a 12kva MIC connection. Best practice, especially on any recent (last 20 years) installs is a 63a fuse on the CU and an 80a fuse on the incoming supply at the meter. This is what we have, and we definitely have a 12kva connection (I got a networks quote to upgrade to 16kva but they wouldnt do it without swapping out my day night meter for a smart meter, no thanks!).

I generally pull in 60-65a for 8-9 hours overnight without issue in the winter months (I have 2 consumer units and one sub board, split supply in such a way that the limiting factor is usually the 80a incoming fuse rather than the 63a in each CU).

Answering the original question about 12kW usage, this is perfectly fine and you've got 2-3kW headroom even at very low voltage. The networks 80a and 63a fuses don't blow straight away either in my experience, its not an on off switch, more like a dont do it for long periods. My peak draw has been 18kW at approx 70a without issue.

    Very impressive!!

How do you configure these in series and parallel? And how does the footprint compare?

Where do you store them? Are they safe in an attic with heat and dust?

As we move closer to the winter it will be my first one with a 40kwh battery. The battery has been topping up automatically from Solar over the summer and used at night and during the day via Self Use setting.

For those of you with similar sized setups, are you automating the charge at night depending on % remaining in battery or are you just setting a charge/discharge schedule based on time of day?

My scenario is I’d like to script via Home Assistant the Sofar 6000HYDEP to charge battery after 12am only if car isn’t plugged into Zappi or if car is plugged in and has finished charging.

I’m not even sure if this is even possible. What are others doing?

I am in much the same position and I have also been pondering, have 30Kw battery and 2 EV chargers wired into the ESB meter box on a 32A circuit, then the washing machine and dishwasher also comes on at night all off the back of a 63A fuse on the CU and 80A ESB fuse.

    So here is the setup,

    • EV chargers are set to prioritize one charger over another so when the master charger is finished the slave kicks in (That's on a Home Assistant automation) so 31A for 9hrs
    • Figure that I will need about 27kw to the batteries so that's 3Kw per hour 14A (Manually set with Solis App)
    • Will manually set the Dishwasher and Washing Machine to come on at separate times, so an additional 13A when elements are heating.
    • The house load at night is normally around 900w - 4 A

So that's 62A in total (Worse case scenario), when the kettle goes on thou will be the craic.

This is one case for 2 zappis, They can load balance, grid limit, and also a cable?Group? limit. (or a zappi and a dumb charger will work)

eg It can limit themselves so that it will pull a max of 32 amps from its connection and also stay under the 63 amp grid limit. Will stop any wiggles from kettles and the like?

still not worth the 16 or even 20kva upgrade.

Not sure about your dishwasher, mine only uses about 10 amps, I cant even see my washing machine on the graphs!. Dryer is a different story though.

And the zappi can load balance very well. In winter it keeps my grid draw at a steady 14.7kW (on my 12kva connection) when I'm charging the car and charging the home battery during night rate hours. When someone puts on the kettle, the zappi will simply reduce charging speed. No chance of the fuse popping!

Tis too late for the Zappi's at this stage as I wont be changing.

Will monitor the situation and if all comes to all I'll have to put the kettle under lock and key each night I guess 🙂

Do folks here really have two Zappi's? I have two EVs, but managing fine alternating different evenings when I have to charge at night time.

😂 Some on here have changed their 3kW kettles for 1kW ones - see if her indoors notices 😂

When the weather is cold my range drops from 380 to 300ish, so I would have to charge nearly every night as I would not have enough to do two days running, although the wife does less mileage we have clashed once or twice this year so hence the second charger.

For that reason I have an outdoor waterproof socket on its own 16A RCBO with a granny cable attached to it. Although our mileages are a bit over average and well below average, so not really any need for it. Just handy to have. Granny cable comes with the car, so is free too.

Very clever. Most people likely only need the occasional 2nd charger very infrequently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,766 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Yes and should both our mileages increase drastically, we shoukstill be able to charge both. I also did this as I expect the "night rate slot" on a smart meter to be shorter and / or in general have small slots with cheap or free electricity where it would make financial sense to draw the max I possibly can from the grid

Two EV household for 5yrs and I can count on one hand the amount of times we needed to Granny along with Chargepoint and we are on the road a reasonable amount

9 hours times 7kW = near 60kWh into each car every other day. That's 30kWh per car per day, or near 200km. Who has 2 EVs in their household that both do a commute of well over 200km per day? I'd well less than 1% of the population.

Apologies if this has been answered already but how many hours would it take to fill a 5kw battery from the grid at night? thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,766 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Battery capacity is in kWh (kilo Watt hour). How long it takes to fill from empty to full depends on your inverter power (in kW). If your inverter is 5kW, it takes one hour to fill up 5kWh 🙂

    Hi Unkel,

What inverter have you got? I seen what you were saying about the 200ah CalB batteries and was just wondering can you buy the inverter and just the batteries and no panels and just use the inverter to charge the batteries at night time? I'm building at the moment and will be getting panels at some point but I was just thinking of getting an inverter and a bank of 20kwh batteries and get the night rate sorted and work away that but I'm not sure can I just do that without adding panels and where do you find is the best place to buy the stuff aswel ?

    Thanks

Hi Jonas and welcome to boards!

I've got a Sunsynk (rebranded Deye) inverter. But it doesn't really matter. And for sure you can put in a system with a hybrid inverter and a battery, without having any solar panels. Charge up the batteries cheaply at night and use it during the day. Or even export it back to the grid during the day for some nice rewards! To give an example, I only buy night rate at 5c / kWh and I do export anything I don't use at 27c / kWh

As for where to buy, that varies. Start a new thread with your budget and your aims, and the people in here will give you good advice on what to get

The CALB cells that have been arriving arent near as good as what was arriving in 2020/21. Personally Id assume the cells to be under 150ah.

They are a very sturdy cell with great terminals. Its a shame that they arent what they used to be.

Some hybrids can be run in battery only mode, [Sunsynk/Deye, for sure, and can check with a few boardsies that have sofar's too. I am unsure of Solis inverters though.]

There is also battery only inverters eg the sofar me3000sp.

Places to look is fogstar.co.uk (will only deliver to the UK, so possibly a parcel service in NI) or nkon.nl.

Hey, late to this, but what is this set up? From your rate description I'm assuming the 7.9 is for a 2-4 / 2-6 window? I'm just figuring out how you fill 30kwh of batteries in such a window if those assumptions are right.

Can I ask you why you wanted to change from the stacked dyness ones?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,609 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

Back then, it was the full night rate of 12-9 on a day night meter.

To do it now you need additional chargers to charge the battery at a higher rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭happyplants

Of course, thanks. Just being from Jan 2023, I had thought all those d/n rates were long gone by that point.

I've been on a smart meter and the Pinergy EV plan for nearly a year now. This is working out very well. I pay just 5c / kWh now and they pay me 25c / kWh for anything that I export. I normally don't really keep track, but someone asked, so I did the sums over last month:

Exported 1835kWh, €459. Imported 1320kWh, €66. Standing charge €30. Total bill for the month, minus €363

Jaysus, I got a minus €30 quid bill last month and thought I was a Lord :) No battery so for me it's just selling the excess and using the cheap night rate as much as I can

Is this possible to set up on an Eddi?

I am not having any luck on google trying to figure it out

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,609 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

What are you trying to do on an eddi? Set it to run on night rate?

There is a schedule on the device, it's also in the app too

I am trying to charge the batteries on the night rate. I couldn't see an option in the Eddi for the batteries.
