Traditionally weak despotic economies can and have been propped up by large public projects - or the war machine. Neither is an option for Russia cos the sanctions and broad geopolitical pariah status means the economy is, to put it bluntly, totally fúcked. Dusting off ww2 tanks and an inability to make artillery barrells to name two military consequences of a squeezed economy.

Economics tends to only reveal themselves over the medium term so it's around now that I'd wonder if the hurt really starts to be seen both in monetary terms (the ruble's collapse) and real ones as the country starts to crumble around the edges.

This better not turn out to be nothing. Also crazy they even reopened it for traffic when more attacks could be imminent.

Until the elite in places like Moscow start to really feel the pain nothing will change in Russia. They are able to pass off the drones strike on Moscow as just a bit of an annoyance . Ukranian intelligence and the military has to come up with a way to inflict more damage in Russia. The ones who are enabling Putin need to be got at in some way. They are happy for the serfs from the poor regions of Russia to suffer for the motherland. The well heeled who support the war will become less patriotic and idealistic if they really start to suffer. If I was Biden I would be giving the Ukranians the mean to land significant blows in cities like Petersburg and Moscow if they are serious about wanting to force Putin to the table.

Seeing news coming in from "NOELREPORTS" on "X" (formerly Twitter) that there has been 2 explosions on \ near the Kersch Bridge with large plumes of white and black smoke visible - the traffic was stopped, then restarted but quickly stopped a second time for some reason........some reports suggest the Ukr used the "Double Tap" method of bombing the bridge, similar to what the russians did yesterday

Black smoke appears to be coming from a smoke machine. No obvious signs yet of bridge damage. This is the first bridge attack during daylight.

Surely these ‘smoke screens’ or actual ‘hits’ would deter the majority of regular bridge users …?

What use is a smokescreen, would it impact the targetting systems of missiles? I have no clue but would have assumed they would hit areas using GPS or something not dependent on a clear sight of the target.

Smoke machines?? Just when this war was getting too pedestrian, we're entering a bizarre period lol

That's nothing compared to what is going on at the Kremlin.

No. Not quite, But I'm getting less and less of how great Putin is, and hearing more complaints about how the every day life is getting harder. Too many Russian refugees arriving back, house / apartment prices going up. Hospitals being filled with people suffering from infections ( ironically, these infections are being blamed on the water released when Putin blew up the Kharkova Dam) and brought back by refugees. Now electricity is being rationed because the system is unable to cope with the 47c temp , so no electricity for 3 hours (minimum) per day peak hrs. and of course things are getting very expensive, and Life is hard for pensioner's, But still, no one is blaming Putin directly for their privations. They are either unable or unwilling to Link Putin and the war to their problems. For my friends who are 100% against the war, and 1'000% anti -Putin and always have been, as long as I've known them, but our conversations are always stilted, and more is gleaned from what is not being said than what is spoken. Facial expressions can tell a lot, especially when my Friend is saying one thing, but shaking his head to indicate the opposite. No matter what the Kremlin says, personally, I do not believe that the majority of people living in the Russian Federation are pro Putin. Certainly not in the republics anyway. The relationship between ethnic Russians and locals would not be too unlike a Catholic living in the North in a Unionist area ( or vise versa) they would be tolerated, but for sure, don't bring one home as a girl / boy friend, let alone marriage material.

Your friend has quite the insight and a lot of time to chat.

Must be in Dagestan are they? That's where those blackouts have been occuring but I don't think it ever got to 47c in Russia this year, or ever.

Nope, not Dagestan ( but yes, I've been there, and still know people there, but we have not being in contact for some time ) And no, I'm not going to say where my friend lives. Where or how do you arrive at the conclusion that my friend has a long time to chat? And just how much insight does it take to relate to everyday events where you live? There's a slight hint of disbelief / sarcasm about your post that does not impress me. The day before yesterday, at 13:30 my friend said, " Its now 47c here, and no electricity, so no fans never mind air conditioning" Now you can believe me or not about the temp, I'm not going to care one way or an other, but I believe what my friend said. But as you may be aware, temperatures are on the rise world wide and extreme weather events are occurring. And as for the rest of my post, do you doubt that as well?

It's not that I don't believe you or your friend, I just think they were wrong about the temperature.

Probably have to wait until tomorrow to find out, but I'd love to know if these were direct impacts, debris parts or smoke deployed.

8 hits is an awful lot (not that I'm complaining :D )

Could this be a saturation strike?

I'm really scratching my head about the use of smoke machines as a way to thwart an incoming attack. Its either complete genius or just another mad and weird story from the Russian side.

The smokescreen is intended to combat remotely-controlled drones - where someone is looking at a video feed and controlling the drone in real time. Some of Ukraine's domestic naval drones definitely operate like this.

By the same token a smokescreen will work against drones that have some autonomous optical-based guidance. This means the drone uses an imaging sensor and some AI stuff to navigate to the target without a human operator. You teach the drone what a Russian ship looks like - perhaps even a specific vessel - and then you send it to a port and hope it finds a target by itself. I don't know if Ukraine have built these yet, but it's a natural progression in an environment with radio and GPS jamming. Some cruise missiles use something similar in the terminal phase.

A smokescreen will have no effect on a drone or missile that navigates autonomously using GPS or inertial guidance. That Shahed drones that Russia uses so much, that's all they do, fly a waypoint mission and then crash into a co-ordinate. Though I am sure more advanced ones will come along soon.

A smokescreen can also disrupt laser-guided munitions. This is where a laser - which can be airborne or on land - paints a target, then the munition homes in on the laser spot. Smoke scatters the laser beam so there is nothing to home in on. Laser guided munitions are definitely used on the battlefield in Ukraine, though I'm not sure that they have been used against the Crimea bridge.

Imagine they are meant for drones and camera control

The most obvious reason I can think off is that they use it as a deterent against drones, and at the time they didn't know what attacked them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,202 ✭✭✭prunudo

I get the idea of a smoke screen, but looking at the earlier videos, and given the lenght of the bridge, surely the operator will just aim for another section. Seems like a very crude form of defence.

As much as I'd love this to be true I think the title is a bit misleading.

I don't think that Ukraine simply burst forwards 20km overnight. Unless I'm mistaken they're talking about an overall advance of 20km split between two points on the map. They're still fighting hard at Robotyne and Urozhaine.

Also, if you want to lie to your public about a fancy bridge getting hit constantly, it's easier to say "we are conducting smoke screen drills" rather than just admit "it was hit again". Not that I'm suggesting Russian officials would lie, no no never sir.

Did some digging could be in total since Jine, which is depressing. But looks like there have been victories or good results today.
