Is our selection date relatively late compared to other teams?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,498 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

it was the first test from what i remember. im also fairly sure that he was playing 13 but wearing 12 as BOD always wore 13, i think when darcy was picked with him v Wales in 2004 they had the same arrangement and it just stuck from there (although they ended up being alot more fluid in their positioning)

Isn't it amazing how far Irish rugby has come in the 11 years since that 60-0 (Wallace flown in to 12 from the beach) embarrassment.

All the same Ireland are still relying on Sexton, Murray, POM, Healy (and Earls... please Andy never ever at centre during the WC)

On the other hand NZ are still relying on Retallick, Whitelock, Smith and Barret.

It's important to recognise how integral NZ/Aus rugby products (Lowe, Aki, JG-P, Hansen) have become in making this an all conquering Irish side.

I think there is an inevitability, something in the stars, that both side will meet in the 1/4 finals again this year....and Ireland continue on in their crusade!

    Do you believe in fate?

Except Sexton is the only player Ireland actually rely on.

Interesting about Am and Plollard I expect they will both be selected .The deselected bit is interesting ,expect players to make way for them

Funny, I think 3 of those 4 players are amongst the weakest in Ireland’s squad. Hansen and Lowe are good solid internationals but not world class, and there are legitimate options to replace them with little impact to the team. Aki is the 3rd best centre and the 4th is around the same level. JGP is currently the best 9, but won’t be this time next year.

Hard to ignore something that didn't really happen. Due to Injuries JGP only came on for Murray once in the 6 nations.. v Scotland.

I think there is a case to be made to start Murray on some games and bring on JGP if some pace needs to be injected into the game.

Against South Africa for example I think Murray will start 9.

I don't think it's surprising that NZ are still using players that have won the RWC and/or won the World Player of the Year.

I don't know if Hansen or Lowe are world class, but they're vital to Ireland's attacking game plan. Both are brilliant distributors and kicking options. The essentially act as auxiliary playmakers. None of our other options have that creative element in their locker. We simply don't attack as well without them.

Lowe's cannon of a boot is also a big bonus.

I don't think we'd suffer unduly if Lowe or Hansen got injured to be honest. Our wingers don't get the ball enough anyway, they've to go look for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,153 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

That's part of the game plan. Wingers coming through to exploit gaps and create overlaps. It's one of the best features of our attack. Out and out wingers like Balacoune suffered in the system because it's not designed to have a finisher just waiting on the touch line for the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,338 ✭✭✭leakyboots

And I think the replacements can do that. Stockdale, for all the criticism he got the last day, is well able to go foraging. We've gotten on fine without say Lowe in the past is my point. And as said above, I don't think our wingers are particularly brilliant players so are relatively interchangeable.

Front row, 10 and 15 are a different kettle of fish.

Let’s hope we don’t face too many breaks in space against the likes of RSA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,834 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

The wingers aren't foraging though. They're stepping in at the right moment to act as another playmaker. That's a different role entirely. I don't think any of our other options, bar maybe JOB, has that in their locker.

The week before Ireland could and really should have won v NZ. That was forgotten in the mess the following week.

The Irish team was exhausted and that last test was a step too far.

Agreed. What sets Hansen and Lowe apart is their ability to pop up and pick the right pass. Not something I would associate with Stockdale for example. They’re footballers whilst Stockdale is more of a finisher for me.

Why are 'footballers' players that can throw passes while lads that can kick and chase aren't footballers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,026 ✭✭✭clsmooth

Good question. Playmaker is a better way of putting it but I didn’t want to just repeat Clegg’s post 😀

I’ve heard Stockdale referred to having a big boot in various places. Is he that good off the boot? May be so but I don’t remember too many instances of him catching it cleanly.

the covid game v italy that he played at 15 he put in some decent clearances. he actually didnt play too badly that day tbh

i dont think hes a great 15 but i also dont think he was in great form overall when he was playing there for ireland, combine that with a team that wasnt playing that well in general and i dont think we got the best overall idea of his ability as a 15 - he had played pretty well there for ulster and the under 20s in the past

having said all that his form since 2018 has been so up and down in general that its hard to judge accurately

I’m of the opinion that 2018 was the outlier where everything he touched went well. There was a period where every chip and chase bounced his way. Would love to see him back in that kind of form but that was 5 years ago now. Is it realistic to think he’ll ever reach that level again?

If he makes the squad I think he’ll be a weapon against Romania and Tonga in the group stages but I’d be worried if he was starting one of the big games for us.

theres an element of making your own luck though. he scored from two very intelligent intercepts that 6N too. he wasnt that bad in 2019 too to be fair to him, he was just playing on an irish team that wasnt doing well (not that he was amazing either)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭Iamabeliever

2018 Stockdale was possibly the best left wing in world rugby. So no I don't think he'll hit those same heights again.

I've tried watching him closely this year with Ulster and he really never looked fit/sharp enough. Surprised he got selected but on Saturday, he actually looked in great nick and seemed to be running more like Stockdale of old and looking dominant in the air which I'm delighted about. I think it will be only a matter of time before it clicks again for him.

I don't see AF bringing 3 left wings but expect a big 2024 year from Stockdale

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭Must love hardship

Stockdale actually made 176 metres with the ball v Italy.

To put that into perspective. When ireland played Italy in the six 176 metres is more than the 2 wingers combined made and one of them got man of the match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

Has the training match taken place against Portugal yet?

    Any reports from it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,153 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

What was the value of those meters tho? I don't think he showed a lot in the way of positives, certainly nothing that demanded inclusion. I don't mean that to knock him, but for me, I don't think he's close to any of the lads in front of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭typhoony

And there you have a prime example of someone with an anti-leinster bias as a result clearly has a hope that Ireland don't do well in the WC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

The metres repeatedly pushed us into scoring positions but we were unfortunately quite wasteful with some of those opportunities. His chase and grab of the ball on the deck after the Italian spill was the catalyst for our first try. His high take was almost the spark for the try that JOB nearly grounded. Doris' second try came after Stockdale broke into their 22.

He had loads of positive impacts on the game.

Took place yesterday, I'm sure reports will come in later today.

That’s stretching it a bit. He got into position as first receiver a few times and was impressed with his catch from Caseys box kick.

That was good to see because he is generally not good in the air and Casey has improved his kicking.
