You could say the same about a lot of laws that are there to protect vulnerable people.. Stalking, sexual harrassment at work, rape, incest..... I could go on but I think you can see where I am going.

    Its not PR. 🙄

If it needs a law to stop predatory landlords behaving like this, then it is an issue.

This is just abhorrent & perverse.

Anyone that thinks it's ok to derive sexual pleasure from this sort of arrangement needs a few hours with the girls or boys father.

Dirty, exploitative & rapey scumbags. Thread should be closed.

Christ what a stupid, stupid thread.

It's hard to believe that this is even up for discussion in what is supposedly modern progressive country.

The current housing crisis (that has been rumbling on for a generation at this stage) is giving birth to all sorts of insane issues.

It's very strange seeing people argue in favour of this. Are renters not hard done by enough in this country?

The cynic in me is thinking that SF love to propose laws like this as they know that no Govt. politician would dare oppose it as they would immediatley be targetted by the media as someone who supports sex for rent!

A friends with benefits arrangement, more common that many would like to admit and recognise I would thing.

None in reality if both entering the agreement without pressure. But in the Irish mentality that anything about sex is harmful it is a different story. Personally I know of many situations where rent is reduced as the tenant gives the landlord some beneficial service, such as security, gardening, painting ect., is sexual benefit the only one that brings the talk of legal control :)

A likely story, if it's to believed by this dirtbag. I have a feeling we've a very very one sided story. I'm sure the other side of the story may be very different.

It's scarily obvious that we haven't heard from one single person happily engaging in sexual favours for reduced rent. All we're hearing is from people like this "happily married" landlord coercing young women into sexual favours.

They aren't friends though they are landlord and tenant.

I'm horrifically astonished that this discussion is even taking place. Particularly by boards users(obviously there's all sorts on here but I'd expect everyone to be at least one notch above the mutant facebook dwellers). What the f*** has happened to society!?

We now have a recorded list of self admitted sexual predators on boards.ie.

I wonder if It's easy to find out who they are.

How about fair rent, and no sex.

Some people clearly haven't moved on from 1930s attitudes of women being chattel owned by their husbands.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

A friends with benefits situation is 2 people who are comfortable with each other and who have sufficient sexual attraction hooking up occasionally for consensual sex.

One of them is not reliant on the benefits part to secure accommodation.

Taken at straight face value, yes you're quite correct. But read the thread and you'll see that there are all sorts of ambiguities and grey areas. That would make legislation very tricky. And that's what the Shinner chap has proposed.

I don't see any issues with the bill

SINN FÉIN HAS today published legislation that would make seeking sex for rent, or advertising such arrangements an offence under the Residential Tenancies Act.

How about fair rent, free sale and fixity of tenure? The three fs, aptly enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,235 ✭✭✭✭Annasopra

None of that makes sense? In this market there is very little "fair" rent, "free sale" makes no sense as the landlord pays income tax

Now, the women own the men in Irish family law courts - once they have that first house and first child, of course. So, there are "chattels" in marriages today alright - and they aren't, for all their playing of the victim card, women.

Exactly what I said. Archaic attitudes that belong in history.

Most notably the OP being one of them. Has had many warnings and posts removed for his long anti-women rants.

He just can't stop himself from bringing the courts up at every single opportunity to justify his attacks on women.

You go to all the cases before the family law courts, yeah?

I doubt many would feel this is a normal situation.

But the fact that it is happening, and some see it as "sure that's grand" is yet another symptom of the moral decay brought on by the hyper greed of irelands housing fiasco.

Irelands purposefully created and carelessly guided housing crisis, mind you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

There will be issues if it ends up criminalising people who don't fall into the category of 'lecherous landlord preying on vulnerable women'.

Take the banning of bedsits by John Gormley's Greens - on paper it was a solid idea. But ask those who lost the options of reasonably costed accommodation and were forced either on public housing lists or into rents they struggle to pay.

Things are very rarely completely black & white.

Yep. Pretty disgusting that people are justifying it and pretending there is no exploitation involved.
