Sigh, such a pity the N2 couldn't go through Phoenix Park, would have made for a much better service then two separate routes.

Any news on the launch of the N2? Any hope it could also happen at the end of August along with this route?

There's some more details about the route from the Irish Independent's link below.

The route is being introduced as a pilot service between the NTA, Dublin Bus & the OPW. The above article does not say how long the new pilot service will last at this time. I guess more details will be released on that from the NTA & Dublin Bus as we go through the remainder of August.

According to a comment in one of the Facebook groups, it'll be operated out of Conyngham Road garage as route 99, with a supposed start date of the 20th.

  • Registered Users Posts: 927 ✭✭✭d51984

Did we not try this before and it was a flop? I can see this service carrying fresh air, honestly put the resources in to services that are needed, I cant see this route 99 or whatever its going to be numbered lasting very long.

Are the OPW going to chip in to help cover the costs?

    Its a disgrace Joe!

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭cgcsb

Pitty that it won't go to broombridge and Heuston, at present it's basically impossible to cross the western half of the city in a North South direction by public transport as it is. You must go via O'Connell St or better yet just drive.

Still don't understand how the OPW can claim the gates are historic, yet allow thousands of cars to pass through them on a daily basis.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,934 ✭✭✭Daith

It's the OPW and they're not fond of change. Would it be that hard to make a new entrance for pedestrians and move the gates there?

It'll be interesting to see how much use the new route gets alright.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,555 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

The difference is however that this time the service might get far better reach with both Dublin Bus and TFI publicising it and featuring it in the journey planner.

That service you refer to was an OPW operation, and let’s be honest most people aren’t going to check their website before visiting the Park.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,487 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

Lets be honest, the new bus route is just a cover for them introducing paid parking.

It is a box ticking exercise to say they are doing something for climate change, while in reality they seem to be planning to greatly increase the number of car parks and parking spaces in the park, thus encouraging even more people to drive!

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,487 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

WOW, I just read part of the OPW report and what assholes they are!

On cycle renting, they look at three options. One of which includes Dublin Bike stations in the park. They reject Dublin Bike with the excuse that the docking stations look visually ugly, which sounds lame but is somewhat understandable. But then they don't consider allowing Bleeper or Moby to park their bikes in the park, which is the obvious solution. Bleeper/Moby are just normal bikes and they can be parked at just any normal bike stand which the park already has.

They also look into escooters and ebike services and give the following bullshit excuses to not aloow them operate in the park:

    • There isn't electricity at all points in the Park. Despite the fact that non of the ebike schemes actually need electricity at the parking locations (a person in a van comes and replaces the battery as needed).
    • But worse, they say they cause visual clutter.

Visual clutter, what a load of horse ****. ebikes look much like any other bikes and all the ebike schemes just use normal bike stands. But it is laughable that they complain about the visual clutter of ebikes in the park, all while leaving cars drive allaround the park and through the park and creating new car parks for cars! Surely if they are worried about "visual clutter" then they should be banning cars from the park (I'm not seriously suggesting this, just pointing out the hypocrisy).

It is clear from the report that they just want to protect the paid bike rental service already in the park and ban all other services from operating in the park.

Don't see what's wrong with Dublin Bikes stations, they don't take up much room, there's acres available. The DIY cross they made out of spare beams is pretty gross but that's there. Not to mention the scale of the cars parked all over the place

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,487 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

I agree it is nonsense. It is clear that they started out with an agenda of wanting to keep/protect the existing paid bike rental service and twisted things to get the result they wanted.

BTW The Three options they looked at:

    • Second paid bike rental service at the other end of the park
    • pop up paid rental bike service at different points of the park during the summer months.
    • Dublin Bikes

No mention of Moby/Bleeper bikes as an option, even though they both operate around the outside of the park!

They mention ebikes separately but reject them for bullshit made up "visual clutter" reasons and then say that actually hiring them in the park can be kept out using geo-fencing. As they currently do with Bleeper/Moby.

I think when it comes to the OPW all you need to do is think back to that time of the wonky bent bus poles on St Stephen's Green North. The OPW didn't want them on the pavement, so the base was set into the carriageway proper and the pole bent over and above the pavement proper as it went up. That just about sums up what a inert and feckless agency they are - basically any positive change that requires any significant effort on their part is something that will be opposed on spurious grounds.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,934 ✭✭✭Daith

They were also cribbing about Stephens Green and how the Metro might impact it. At some stage we need to do some disruptive work to get better transport.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,824 ✭✭✭rx8

Rumours abound this morning suggests that Phase 5 of Bus-Connects will be pushed back to late October or even November, with Phase 6 not coming until next year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 910 ✭✭✭brianc89

Two requests if anyone can help:

    • full list of planned phase rollouts including dates

    • revised city centre map post College Green pedestrianization

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,122 ✭✭✭p_haugh

    1) Theres no merit in really giving dates as the current timeline is very much pie in the sky stuff due to the driver shortages.

    2) In terms of the revised routing post college green pedestrianisation, this is the indicative plan (as of the 2019 network consultation report, Pg. 26).

The report in full for reference:

They really need to make the quays bus only between Heuston and Custom House with that level of ambition in terms of bus routes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭cgcsb

Even if Jervis St to Customs house was bus only people could actually move around the place is crippled with cars.

Ringsend Corridor off to planning -> (distinct bang of being thrown in before going on holidays )

    Dear Community Forum Member,

This is a no-reply email address. Please feel free to email queries to cbc@busconnects.ie

We are emailing you to provide a status update in relation to the Core Bus Corridors specifically the Ringsend to City Centre Core Bus Corridor Scheme.

This week, the National Transport Authority (NTA) gave notice of its application under Section 51(2) of the Roads Act 1993 (as amended) to An Bord Pleanála for approval in relation to a proposed road development consisting of the construction of the Ringsend to City Centre Core Bus Corridor Scheme.

For information, a small number of changes have been made to this scheme following consideration of the submissions received during the third round of public consultation (at the end of 2020) and these are summarised below.

    • Extension of the Scheme extents westwards to include the junctions at Memorial Bridge on Custom House Quay and on City Quay.
    • Revised orientation of Scherzer Bridges (Royal Canal) at Spencer Dock to match existing alignment.
    • Inclusion of traffic management works at Mayor Street to accommodate eastbound traffic as mitigation for restriction of the left-turn from Guild Street southbound onto North Wall Quay eastbound.
    • Further rationalisation of bus stop locations, with some bus stops relocated or removed to achieve a better spacing between stops, while also ensuring that each stop is sited in the best location to serve surrounding neighbourhoods.
    • Landscaping updated throughout; and
    • Cycle and pedestrian facilities have been further optimised

A copy of the application documentation may be viewed and downloaded free of charge at www.ringsendscheme.ie . Please note all previous documents regarding BusConnects are still available on www.busconnects.ie

Submissions/observations on this scheme may be made in writing to the Board at An Bord Pleanála (Strategic Infrastructure Division), 64 Marlborough Street, Dublin 1, D01 V902 between Wednesday 9th August 2023 and Tuesday 3rd October 2023.

Any submissions/observations must be accompanied by a fee of €50 and must be received by the Board not later than 5.30 p.m. on the 3rd October 2023. This fee will not apply to certain prescribed bodies including those specified in Section 51(3)(b) of the Roads Act 1993 (as amended) or to landowners and others with a legal interest in land who are objecting to compulsory acquisition of land in which they have such an interest in a compulsory acquisition case.

Submissions/observations can also be made on the An Bord Pleanála website at the following address: https://www.pleanala.ie/en-ie/observations

It is our intention to submit the schemes on a phased basis with the next scheme likely to be submitted:

    • Bray to City Centre CBC Scheme.

As each scheme is submitted for approval to An Bord Pleanála, the process of public notifications in newspapers and online will be repeated.

    Yours Sincerely,

    BusConnects Team

Probably far more to do with the legislation underpinning it only signed into law in mid-July.

Is there a map of this Phoenix Park route anywhere or is it straight up and back Chesterfield Avenue?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭cgcsb

Quick look at Ringsend seems to indicate this scheme remains largely intact. But of course yet again the NTA have prioritised cars by providing turning lanes ar the expense of a bus lane, and even one that directs car traffic directly towards to the absolute centre of the city.

I think a lot of the cbcs, particularly the south side ones have been watered down to the point of being effectively scrapped. The designer has ignored all design guidance and instead has sought to maximise space for cars. If we look at what is proposed for the junction at Christchurch for instance, it's clear showhorning dualers into the city centre remains an active policy goal. Pedestrians have lost out here more than any other road user, lethal sub 1m footpaths will remain next to 6 lane roads.

The cross roads at Phibsboro, another absolute cluster eff that ignores sustainable modes in favour of traffic

The Kevin St-Patrick St junction should be thrown out by ABP, Dreadful design, 3 car turning lanes, no bus lane and you can just about get a wheelchair around the corner if you have great aim. The people who design this and the reviewers who accept it must be preo car at all costs.

"I think a lot of the cbcs, particularly the south side ones have been watered down to the point of being effectively scrapped."

Can't really disagree with this. Difficult to swallow given that this is a multibillion euro project.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

The people who design this and the reviewers who accept it must be preo car at all costs.

The only hope now is that ABP tell them to feck off and not to come back again until they take cognisance of basic policy and design guidance.

I'd wonder if a few groups will object/JR it on the basis of not meeting the climate action plan.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,860 ✭✭✭trellheim

what how on earth is it pro car , get up the yard.

we do only 3 journeys a week regularly in the car and do mean only three journeys back and forth a week , the rest are walk or cycle and we are very dedicated to not getting in the car.

weekly shop - broken by busconnects

visit parents - broken by busconnects

go to club - broken by busconnects

and all three are different corridors . If thats how badly we are affected the rest are going to go nuts . Car friendly my ass. I also do not see in the slightest how any of our cycle journeys or walking journeys are improved

  • Registered Users Posts: 27,223 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

If ABP would hurry up and get a response out to one of the CBCs, then the design could be altered for the later ones.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭cgcsb

Well I'm not commenting on your particular journeys, just looking at the general arrangement drawings which show multiple car lanes, little or no bus provision and anti pedestrian and anti disabled layouts

Can they not continue with the infrastructure works for many of the routes, even if there is a driver shortage?
