Heat Pump retrofit into a 1950s semi-detached house

    Hi all


    I'm currently gathering quotes from "One-Stop-Shops" for a major insulation/energy upgrade of my 1950s semi-detached house in Dublin. I'm torn between getting solar or getting a heat pump. I need to get one of the two in order to meet the "renewables" requirement of the scheme and therefore qualify for the grant but the cost to get both is prohibitive.


    My question is does anyone here have experience of how efficiently heat pumps work in retrofitted houses of this type? My concern is that I think it could be difficult/impossible to make an older house as airtight as these systems need to be in order to run efficiently when all works are complete and I would be then left without my gas boiler, no way to go back to it, massive bills and a cold house.

    Any experience/advice is welcome!

    I'm in a similar situation except the house is 1920s. Architect has recommended dry lining with a wood fibre material to increase thermal mass and let moisture pass through the walls, but cover everything then in an air barrier to ensure air tightness. Though I want to be sure it'll work before committing.
