On a lighter note KMag had a baby this week which is give or take 9 months since his maiden pole at Interlagos last November. His best professional achievement leading to a major personal milestone. Not a bad way to celebrate it!

The podium in Australia for McLaren was up there for his Motorsport achievements. I think it was McLaren's last podium before there was a big gap when they switched to Honda engines.

    Ms

I think you mean his wife had a baby unless he had a gender change and has a Womb and ovaries now which would be very big news as well as a very big medical achievement.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Aston Martin breaching in twice in two years will hardly be looked favourably upon.

Cant wait to hear what level of "But But Red Bull" that will come out of Toto's mouth if thats true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,412 ✭✭✭KillerShamrock

Depends if they breached about the same as redbull did then the same penalty, if they are massively over then meh give them the same as red bull seen as it did nothing to them anyway so the penalties are meaningless. They will just do a better job of hiding overspends in future and not go full board catering which caught red bull out.

In all seriousness any repeat offenders instant DQ driver and constructor championships make an example now or just give up the cost cap. new offenders need like a % discount of points based on the overspend amount

It did nothing to do them because they absolutely nailed the car and are so far ahead of the rest. Those penalties would have a much bigger impact on any other team.

Had to double check I was still in the F1 thread… Wtf folks. It’s entertaining at least. 😁😁

So the pecking order behind Red Bull seems to be McLaren & Mercedes then Ferrari & Aston Martin? Only a week to wait until the next race thankfully.

Re. the rumoured cost cap breaches, FIA are putting a stop to them for now...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,095 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

Which means a team(s) most definitely breached the cost cap!

The last two races have been **** for Alpine. No points, nothing. Their biggest rival for fifth in the Constructors Championship (McLaren) scored 58 points and now have a 40 point gap over Alpine.

And no one picked up on this but the CEO Laurent Rossi was sacked.

This McLaren v Alpine thing last year was turned into a Zac Brown v Otmar Szafnauer rivalry by Drive to Survive despite the fact that the two men have completely different roles within their teams, Otmars direct opposite was Andreas Sidil, now Andrea Stella while Zac would be up at what was Laurent Rossi's position. But Netflix just thought "Hey, American vs American" which coloured a lot of peoples opinion of Zac.

Netflix lies to build up drama.

    This too shall pass.

Its depressing that even with Maclarens massive upgrade they were still 11 seconds behind Max. Is this what its going to be like all the way to 2026?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,569 ✭✭✭recyclebin

Wonder if McLaren can catch Ferrari or Aston in the constructors? They look quite ahead on pace but Perez will probably take more podiums now if he drives well, so more difficult for McLaren to beat Perez and two Mercedes to score big points every race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,045 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Hopefully with the other teams getting development time Red Bull aren't and if Perez keeps letting the floor get photographed we might see a close up and an overtake.

    This too shall pass.

In fairness, despite their different job titles, they both tend to act as the face of the team when speaking to any media, not just on Netflix. In post race interviews and the like it will always be Otmar speaking for Alpine and it will be Zak speaking for McLaren 90% of the time. The teams have different structures and everything isn't a 1-1 mapping.

The reason Szafnauer gave for leaving Aston Martin and joining Alpine was that Stroll interfered too much and he felt he was no longer running the team, while Alpine gave him more control as Rossi was CEO of Alpine in its entirety and was primarily concerned with the road car division, which would give Otmar free reign over the F1 team.

I'm not sure that proved to actually be true as you'd hear a lot about discord around Rossi's interference (I believe Prost left for that reason previously) - what is true though is that Rossi was CEO of the Alpine car company and F1 was not his primary responsibility, while Zak Brown is specifically CEO of McLaren Racing and not their road car operation, he is ever present on the pitwall and he is clearly very hands on in how the team is run, albeit with a Team Principal also sitting under him. It might be a culture that stems back to the old days of Ron Dennis being both CEO and TP.

Andrew Benson with some extra salt on his dinner it seems

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 11,484 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Yeah I read that. I thought Ted Kravitz was similarly salty in his post race notebook - basically saying he doesn’t consider the 12 wins in a row legit until it’s won a single season. So he’s going to wait until Spa and if they win there then he’ll acknowledge it proper. How very gracious of him…

That's not actually very much across 70 laps. The average winning gap in the "Golden Age" of the 90s was 18 seconds.

Yes, Red Bull have the best car, but it's galling to hear Toto of all people coming out with comments of it's like having a "field of F2 cars against an F1 machine". If anything it's Verstappen that's making the difference. He's pretty much driven perfectly all season. That, in combination with a crew who don't make mistakes, means he's running away with the championship.

Yes, the Red Bull is the best car, but not by a massive amount. If Aston Martin, for example, had progressed at the same rate as McLaren, they'd probably be as fast as Red Bull now. Red Bull have managed to stay one step ahead of the rest. Not three or four, like the Mercs of a few years ago.

Croft as well was on a roll. I get that there will always be bias towards the Brits in the sport, this doesn’t really fall into that though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,045 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Take the two sprints into account and they have achieved it in one season.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,499 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Did you hear him mention how red bull, based in BRITAIN, have the record which was previously held by McLaren, based in BRITAIN.

I know there can be a trope of British bias, but sky go above and beyond some times...

If they win the sprints they won't be counted, but as soon as they lose one wait for Ted and co. to start questioning is the run still going since they lost a sprint and in their eyes it isn't.

Regarding the Red Bull dominance that Andrew Benson article made me look back at the 2016 championship, Mercedes won 19 of 21 races. The only saving saving grace for Mercedes is that Rosberg and Hamilton were trading wins. I think it's splitting hairs arguing if this Red Bull is as dominant as that Mercedes, it's hard to tell if Perez's performances are down to the car or him, if he can hold onto finishing second in the title it's hard to argue the car isn't as good as people are saying, but take Max out of the equation and I don't think anyone would be saying the Red Bull is a dominant car with Perez behind the wheel.

The bias is expected and kind of understandable tbh, even if it does make me roll my eyes sometimes, we're all used to it at this stage. But the sly little digs towards Reb Bull/Max and their current achievements come across as bitter - no doubt relating back to how the 2021 season ended.

@Vicxas - it was 33s rather than 11 that Max was ahead at the end? Or maybe I miss-read your post. 🙂

I just saw the last few laps of the race again there on Sky, Max was approx. 14 or 15s ahead of Lando with 13 laps to go. He had already set his fastest lap and still more than doubled that lead in the remaining laps when clearly not pushing. Impressive stuff!

Alfa will incorporate some green onto their livery for Spa:

No bueno. I know it's Kick's colour but would look better if they used the Quadrifoglio colour.

In other news (that has put a damper on my morning) - F1TV are now blocking VPN connections. Anyone who legally pays for F1TV and accesses the service via VPN will have to look elsewhere.

Very annoying, but was realistically probably going to happen sometime.

Seeing this being cracked down for so many streaming services, it is a shame but seems more to be the norm more and more.
