When is mid day in Ireland in Summer according to the Sun?

When is mid day according to the sun? We're a little far to one side in the time zone so I figure that makes it about 1:30pm. I'd like to know the exact time though. I know it depends on your exact location too.

It depends on your exact location and the date. Google is your friend if you want to actually work it out for your specific location.

Do you happen to know how the date affects it? It's okay if you don't. I thought the date just affected sunrise and sunset times by the same amount with each day passing... with midday staying at the same time.

That's a complete jumble. "midday stays at the same time"?? It's a bit complicated and I really would suggest you have a read up on it first, then ask any questions for clarification. Earth's orbit is not perfectly circular, meaning that the Earth–Sun distance varies throughout the year, hence date comes in to play.

If you want a simple guide then it's an hour difference from Greenwich for every 15degrees of Longitude.

The date affects the time of midday for the same reason it affects the time of sunrise and sunset. Because Earth is at an approx. 23 degree axis, as it orbits the sun, different parts of the earth are leaning towards or away from the sun, so that's what changes the sun's position throughout the year.

Also, you may be interested to know that north of the Tropic of Cancer (like us) and south of Tropic of Capricorn, the sun is never directly overhead, even at midday because the tilt of the earth doesn't tilt enough for the sun to shine directly down that far south or north of the equator.

Interesting, solar noon drifts on that as well as day length (eg from 12:31 GMT in July to 12:08 GMT in December), is that something to do with an elliptical orbit perhaps?
