I don't think you can specify when to initiate the contract it starts when you go live. On the morning of the 24th put in the order and plug in the new modem on the 27th

Just be careful how long you give when signing up for different provider. Got a better offer from vodafone. €35 a month for 500mb broadband but then also an extra €5 off a month so only €30 a month for first year so signed up for them. Been waiting for enginer to call for over a week and rang up and even though they sent out letters to me with my account number and IBAN details they have no record of me on the system and now they wont honour the offer they had originally given me as they have upped their prices to €40 a month. Its not worth the hassle being on the phone for hours now trying to sort this and my current broadband will probably expire in the menatime so will just sign up with virgin again as new customer for €45 a month, at least there is no hassle.

Vf are a disaster, cancel the DD and go with VM for another year.

Not for me they weren't. Engineers were out when they said they would and we're very quick. Broadband is as good as VM was and way cheaper. No brainer.

I'm hearing more bad stories than good about them in the last year or so, my daughter had a nightmare with them, making retention deals on the phone then denying they ever said it etc etc, she left and went to Eir.

Can only speak to my own experience. Great initial set up, rang back before I was out of contract and got the same deal for another 12 months, quick, painless, no messing. The exact opposite to VM.

Recently increased from 250mb to 500mb and while all tablets and phones seem to be working fine on Wi-Fi, the work laptop isn’t working properly at all on Wi-Fi. Lots of lag. Any ideas how to fix this. It works fine at work etc.

Cancelled Virgin via e-mail, got a call from them a week or so later (yesterday). Told them I was switching to Sky for 360 p/a, was offered 12 months half price @ €35 per month, accepted.

Hi lads I just cancelled to move to Sky but have found out that I'm not on the NBI fiber plan so am stuck with Virgin. Can I let it cancel and get my wife to sign up as a new customer or do they stop this?

Double checked, used it, got reply + follow up phone call. Must not be defunct.

Worked for me a few months ago, I used a different email and bank account.

I've done this a few times keeping all the details the same.

One year I literally handed the phone to my wife so that she could setup a new account after I closed mine followed by her handing it back to me so that I was added as a nominated contact on her new account - all on the same phonecall. Some rigmarole.

You can also add multiple accounts to your online Virgim Media account resulting in you still having access to all of the online billing / usage details.

No, just 500mb broadband. Believe it or not I use a metal hairclip as an antenna to receive saorview TV channels, picture quality direct into LGTV is better than putting it through a VM box. Now TV for Sky Sports, VPN for BBC, ITV etc.

How do I time it to avoid paying one month at full price? On the phone they won't allow me to cancel until I'm out of contract which commits me to 30 days at full price. I've tried cancelling when there's exactly 30 days left but no joy. Am I missing something obvious?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭EarWig

You can give a cancel date for the end of the 12 month contract. Just give that one month in advance. That's what I did.

But, I used the email address. VM customer service is crap beyond belief, so you could be told anything on the phone.

Thanks, I'll try that next year using the email.

    Made the call today as contract nearly up on TV(2 screens)/BB. Last 12 months I paid €67 pm for 9mths then €119 pm for 3mths. Total €960. They offered me €96.5 x 9 mths & €111.5 x 3. Total €1203.

    I called Sky and they offered me €50 x 2 and €84 x 10. Total €940. The Sky price also includes Netflix which I’m currently paying €21 x 12 = €252.

So overall if I include Netflix Virgin are €1455 compared to Sky at €940. Desperately disappointed in Virgin, I’ve been a member for many years, looks like I’m done with them. Will be sending the cancel email tomorrow.

@BlazingSaddler Can't you go the antenna route and just pay them for broadband? I get all the channels I need inc. Sky Sports cheap enough via alternatives like NOW. ~€900 a year for TV channels is ridiculous, even the Sky price is far too much.

Currently out of contact with Virgin and have tv and home phone with them. Was a new customer and rang cancellations and not entertaining me. Curently on 500 with Virgin and not sure whom else provide this? Dont think we can get Sky as believe need phone line in ???

Also if I change account to Mrs Gunner do they issue a new Modem as have existing one bridged and dont want to muck around with new one. Also any loss of service if changeover ?

Going to try ringing Virgin again see if I get anything better

Emailed through to cancel my contract a couple of days ago. Currently paying €85/month for 1GB (had 9 months half price before this) and my 12 months are up mid-August. Going to switch to Eir I think, doing the dance with Virgin every year does get very tiresome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,235 ✭✭✭BlazingSaddler

I called back yesterday to confirm my cancellation, I was on hold for 30 mins and then another 30 mins them trying to persuade me to stay but absolutely no movement on price. They were absolutely slating Sky, Eir and the rest, quite awful tactics really. Tried to tell me how much money I’d saved over the years by being with them with all the discounts I’ve had like they’d being doing me a huge favour. Talked to me like I was born yesterday, really insulting the intelligence. Apparently 60% of customers don’t call for a new deal at the end of their contract!! Glad to be moving on after that tbh.

Do you mind me asking which VPN your using? Are you running it via the TV?

Checkout getflix, absolutely fantastic. There's a thread on it here, I got lifetime subscription for 55 Euros.

So, €40 a month fixed forever apart from inflation increases.

    I'm in.

Finally an end to premium prices for low end fibre. And 500mbit speeds are excellent.

Such a relief if this goes industry wide as switching is a royal pain in the the backside.

With inflation a 7% plus VF gifting themselves another 3% they won't be long getting up to €60 a month, a long way from €35...
