Everyone is quoting that cru "cheapest electric"

But they are pushing their fixed one a lot.. the standard rate is 62c/kwh.

New operater is good for the market. Hopefully they will have good rates

Good Electricity rates, in current climate.

Gas standing charge a little high, its has an almost €88 higher, annual standing charge than SSE Airtricity Gas only tarriff, however tbf, only impacts, ultra low gas users like myself, as lower standing charge, cancels out the higher gas unit rates, for low gas users, and give me a lower annual gas bill overall, to the tune of at least €75

Just spotted Energia gas only plan, is cheaper again, than SSE Airtricity, looks like one of the lowest on the market at €141.60 annually, but again here, more suitable, for low gas users, as gas usage rate is higher.

Flogas smart meter rates are awful!

<Insert supplier name here> smart meter rates are awful! 😉

That's the sad reality of smart meters mate. All the suppliers saw a chance for a money grab and went for it, and the CRU apparently doesn't even know the price of electricity so didn't do anything to stop them

Trying to get my current supplier, Airtricity, to exchange a smart meter (set to 24hr) for a nightsaver one. They say the cost will be approximately €400 and that this is a "networks charge"

I've obviously replied looking for an exact price before I commit to anything

Is this an accurate cost for getting a nightsaver meter in?

There should be no cost to you if its your first time asking for a meter change. If you decide to change back then they can charge you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,735 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I had a feeling that was the case yes, I've asked before for a change of meter but the process went on so long I just gave up without getting the change. I had free work charging introduced at the time so I didn't pursue further. Now we have 2 EVs so it's back on the cards again

So technically I've inquired before but didn't go ahead with it at the time

It's a load of bullshit, these providers have some neck on them, there's no cost involved in changing your meter for the first time at your request.

Cheers, i've emailed ESB Networks for clarification, I'll send that on to Airtricity when I hear back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,101 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

First change is free. Networks won't deal with you, you have to go through your supply company

I got my change via Energia so you should be ok once you get through to someone that actually knows their job

Airtricity... Not sure there's anybody working for them that fits that description

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,479 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Also pretty sure the cost to change a meter for the second time is only like €180 or something? It's not a huge cost. ESB can tell you since they're the ones doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,101 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Yes its 180 currently but because networks invoice the supply company as opposed to the end user directly, it's actually up to the supply company what they charge you

I had a similar experience from Bord Gais and was left astounded that electricity even reached my house by the end of the conversation

I was given the similar runaround regarding the cost to change a meter, and Bors Gais even put me through to someone from ESBN

The story I got was that the supplier requests the meter change and ESBN will bill them accordingly. Bord Gais then told me that they will pass along any costs for changing the meter, but ESBN might not charge them for it (totally contradicting the woman fro. ESBN)

This is despite the fact that I already have a digital meter, no hardware change needed

There seems to be a rule that if you change your meter after 3 years then you don't pay for it, however it doesn't seem to be an official policy, more of an unwritten rule. I assume this is so that ESBN can arbitrarily charge people when they want to

So unfortunately, don't expect any definitive answers, just factor in the potential costs to change into your analysis

I'm on the fixed BWG electricity only offer - 29.99c 24hr rate.

getting an EV in 2 weeks time - there's nothing to be gained from switching to their bwg smart meter rates is there?

I had this shenannigans with Energia last year, when i got the meter changed to day/night.

1st person i spoke to in Energia, said, no, i cannot change the meter.

2nd person i spoke to in Energia, said i could change it, but there is a cost of circa €200

3rd person i spoke to, agreed, i could change the meter, and there would be no charge, so they said they put in the order to ESB networks.

I called ESB networks, the following day, to check they had recieved the order, they had not.

4th person i spoke to in Energia, put through the order - finally.

So, the lesson is, mass confusion amongst the customer service people, across all utility providers, but be strong, keep at it !

I'm in exactly the same position I'm going to ring them tomorrow and see will they get me a day/night meter, does anyone know what their rates are offhand?

I don't think it's mass confusion at all. I was told there is a directive inside the utility companies to disincentivise any move away from smart meters nationally. Making it difficult to do is part of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,024 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Disincentivise is one thing but telling blatent lies is another especially when you contact esbn and they say there's no problem getting a D/N meter installed.

I am with electric Ireland smart boost. I just charge my battery, car and run electric heavy appliances during the 2-4am cheap rate. Works well. Have solar so that helps.

I've a smart meter, EV & finally got 20kwh battery setup, all charging during the 2-5, using the table of charges above these were my current usage was €81.07 but that 32% discount ends next week. Pinergy best during summer, but in Winter I dont think the 20kwh battery will cover so it's close between the rest depending on standing charge. Probably stick with the BWG Offer

Is there a breakage fee for leaving Flo gas electric BWG plan?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭Core6

That is a really useful piece of information.

    Really well done and thanks.

Can I ask you what is you battery setup?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,101 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

its really useful for him, you'd have to plug in your own info to get the same info for you.

I put in a 304ah DIY pack, approx 14kwh usable.

I've sent an email to Flogas requesting a change to a D/N meter, I just couldn't face talking to a numpty, I'll see how it pans out.

I got through to them pretty easily and they had the ESB out within 2 weeks to make the change.
