No NCB, no named driver credit, despite two policies

An insurance company will not recognise my named driver experience because during the period of being named I also had my own NCB which is now expired. So once you lose your NCB they suggest you lose everything up to that point. Is this normal?

in more detail; in 2020 I had 6 years NCB on my own car. I was named on my wife's car. We dropped back to one car.

Now we are back to two cars. My NCB expired after two years. They will only recognise two years named driving under my wife's policy despite having 5 named, consecutive, no gap.

Is this one for the ombudsman? It makes zero sense that I could have had two cars for every several years and get penalised

There is no requirement on any insurer to recognise or allow a no claim bonus. It is a marketing and underwriting tool. As such, the Ombudsman won't assist

I think you need to go to a reputable broker who could make representations to insurers on your behalf

That's shocking, you could plead the covid case for those years, no income dropped down to one car to ease pressure.

interesting the quote was still below other companies, but that isnt the point really, its still over what others are paying

The insurance companies don't care. NCDs aren't regulated so there's no one to complain about insurance companies not giving it. Similar happens if you have protected or step back NCD on your policy, if you make a claim only your current insurer will recognize the protection you bought for every other insurer you have zero NCD.

The solution for married people with 1 car is to switch the policy holder annually, that way both get an NCD.

If you switch policy holder annually do you have to change owner on log book every year as main driver?

Lot of admin, but yes, stops you expiring, clever!

No. The ownership thing was hardened some years ago because every kid was insured under their mothers name....

However, sensibly, for now, if you are legally married they don't care which partner owns the car, as ultimately they both own it.

Wow didn't know that I have NCB protection added to my policy for 15yrs so I'd have to stay with them either way.
