    Root is an all-rounder now??

Bit of a rush of blood…. T20 mode…. It wasn’t a good delivery I don’t know why Green went aerial, he’d have hit a handy enough boundary by cutting it. The match situation certainly didn’t warrant a shot likely that.

wonder will Stokes have the stones to throw the new ball to Tongue.

would stokes play if he wasn't captain? ie: is he good enough as just a batter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭dohboy

Well he's supposed to be an all rounder but his knee is clearly crocked and he's not able to do much more than 4/5 overs a day when in the field. His form with the bat has been iffy enough in the last 18 months. He'd defo still get in the team tho. I think he'll retire from Tests after this series.

Yes, Yet he’s playing for the Chennai Super Kings, only a few weeks back..

if I’m Stokes I’d just quit bowling…no other aspect of the sport will challenge your fitness and wellbeing… just gone 32….played a savage amount of international, domestic and franchise cricket….No surprise his body is showing the effects. Should focus on his batting.

    He’d still get selected.

Anyway, unless England have a hell of a morning tomorrow, winning this second test is beyond them.

Any Australian still batting at lunch and it will be with around a 410/420 lead for them.

For the remainder of this series brave selection decisions are needed….

Anderson & Broad only managed 7 wickets between them in the entirety of the first test…33 overs bowled between them here in the second test and not a single wicket to either of their names yet…..

cant keep going to the well and delivering at their age….soo many miles of the clock.

probably the biggest catalyst to their continued selection is the lack of talent ready to take over.

We’ll know in the first hour or so of play tomorrow. If Smith & Carey are still there, English order will be rabbits in the headlights when they eventually get to bat later in the afternoon.

Still a way to go but if it pans out badly, Stokes judgements will take harder scrutiny.

Decision was sound, just didn’t execute. Has to said as well as Australia batted, they enjoyed a nice bit of luck all day. Beaten numerous times, tight decisions going their way.

Not winning Edgbaston with Warner, Labushchange and Smith doing nothing twice is going to hurt England. One nil down going to Lord’s where the opposition tend raise their game, it will take a lot of good cricket to get back in the series from here.

Innings only 83 overs old and the extras… !

    Total 36 - 12 NB, 12 B, 12 LB

real careless to have 12 no balls and 12 byes in a days play.

    way too many of everything.

Interesting day ahead. Rain at the moment so conditions should suit the bowlers, we'll see if they get more for their efforts than yesterday. Minimum target for Australia is 400, 450 and the game is really a big ask for England you have to think Cummings et al will be a handful on this pitch given Tongue's exploits.

There goes smith for 110. 393 for 8. Good morning for england. Aussies will be happy with 420 now

Letting joe root get those 2 wickets yesterday evening will really piss off the aussies

If I was the coach here and I have done my coaching stuff with club cricket in the past I would be really angry with these stats. That is simply not good enough for professional players at international level. I realise the slope at Lords can be offputting but a stat like this for the England team is not acceptable. Lets see the Aussies stats in a while, bet they won`t be like this

Starc, Cummins Hazelwood and Lyon all have 200 plus test wickets. Thats bit of context

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,764 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

416 all out... Aussies will not be too disappointed... they'd have taken that at 10am yesterday morning... maybe 'liked' 40 more but so it goes...

Couple of early wickets and England are fecked... England need to get up to around 380 minimum...

Openers will be nervy, close to lunch.

Good day for England so far, we may have a test on our hands here...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭MFPM

Australia needed that wicket, England had batted well so far. Australia started the day in a dominant position and then gave away a few cheap wickets this morning and followed it up with poor bowling at times. Crawley doing as he's done his whole career, play some nice shots, get 40 and give away his wicket...given his chat in the run up to the test, the Aussies will be pleased!

I wish they could mute that mike as Labuschagne is so annoying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,766 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Yup. I think Kevin Pietersen is looking a bit of a pr*t now after his comments yesterday.

Starc being Starc so far. The odd ball threatening, the rest very hitable. He has missed the best bowling conditions mind.

He was all sweetness and light this morning on coms, saying England looked in a lot better form after around three balls lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭MFPM

Starc is really expensive here. He always is but when he picks up wickets it hides his profligacy. He doesn't really look like taking wickets here..England are scoring quite easily now.

Last thing Australia need is Lyon injured. Doesn’t look comfortable at all walking around the boundary.

Australia bowling exclusively short with no Lyon and England just encourage them by playing shots and getting out. Root especially should have known to wait it out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,174 ✭✭✭pavb2

Yes he should have capitalised on that massive NB let off at 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭MFPM

Lyon will be a big blow and his absence could be series defining. Definitely England's day notwithstanding the wickets they threw away. They will fancy their chances tomorrow of overtaking Australia's score and getting a lead. Australia need to get their act together in the morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,764 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Lyon looks to be donald ducked….wonder will Murphy get the nod at Headingly. A very young and inexperienced cricketer but he’s quite highly thought of apparently…Also Headingly in modern times doesn’t suit spin bowlers really so…. Adil Rashid is the only spinner in the entire Yorkshire squad…. He’s nowhere in the top 80 wicket takers in the county championship. Maybe another seamer.

first session tomorrow is massive. England go in at 360/5 they will be delighted.

Australia can’t be happy with today. Starting at 339-5 and ending it with England only 140 behind and six wickets left.

I can recall Wagner bouncing England out under Root and Silverwood so attaching those short ball wickets to Bazball is a bit lazy. But then most conversions about it are lazy and you can see why McCullum hates it.
