Free travel in Europe?

Hi.Does anyone know if Irish pensioners get free travel throughout Europe? Is it limited to buses or trains?

No. Island of Ireland only and NI needs their card applied for separately.

Most countries don't have similar schemes and nearly all that do limit it to residents

Theres sometimes discounts for pensioners but they nearly always have to pay.

For cities the discounts tend to be for weekly or monthly tickets and/or you need a special local photo card so very much focused on residents of that area.

For long distance trains you might get a few percent off but often being flexible and travelling off peak and booking in advance will save far more than relying on special pensioner discounts.

Luxembourg has free travel for everyone but you dont go there on holiday to save money.

In Portugal over 65s get a 50% discount on all rail fares. Just produce your Irish Passport.

It means that you don't have to bother with online advance booking to get a really good deal. And even the undicaounted fares are good valus

Your ticket will have your passport number printed on it and if a checker wants to verify your eligibility, your passport and ticket numbers must match. Not that I have seen it done, but it shows that they take a methodical and serious approach to revenue protection.
