It's still hard to see beyond Dubs or Kerry for Sam

To be fair, they got a pretty handy draw in 2022. They faced Leitrim and Roscommon in Connacht, and Armagh and Derry in the All Ireland's, Derry who were a year behind where they are now and coming from League D3.

They beat what was in front of them, but maxed out in the final and still came up short. The questions were about could they improve on the squad depth, Nad it looks like they haven't really been able to do that. Comer looked to be moving OK today actually, but the support cast were way off what was required. The likes of Burke, Tierney, Cook, et al were rudderless and without Walsh shooting the lights out there was nothing. PJ has gotten an easy ride so far, will he fancy another year, a year when he has to answer real questions about his squad and make some really tough calls. Will Conroy fancy another year? Are they going to rely on the likes of Finnerty for another campaign? How does he use the talented McDaid, because it looks to me like he hasn't a clue what to do with him and he can't drip him ( a midfielder names at wing back and looked to be playing at wing forward, and didn't seem to know where he was or what role he was supposed to be playing.). They were rudderless today, aimless in possession and played Mayo's game.

Mayo need a good draw, they can't play Kerry I think? They need Armagh I think, I wouldn't fancy them against Derry if Derry show up, but maybe Dublin will get their juices going, one more time with feeling!

GAA really need to move out of Salthill, that is nowhere for a game BTW. Another game ruined by the wind tunnel, put houses in it or sell it to the IRFU for Connacht rugby, cause it's a nightmare between poor games and no parking and poor access around it. Move back to Tuam I say.

“Days like today make up for all the lost finals”

No they don’t. I really don’t understand this way of thinking at all. Trophys on the sideboard are all that counts.

Joyce complaining about the ref in the post match interview on the Sunday Game?! How does he get away with this? Galway got so many calls in their favour in that match particularly in the 2nd half and still lost.

Scoring 12 out of 26 is where a manager's focus should be. It's actually a bad example for players not to take any responsibility

I’ve heard it all now.comparing an all Ireland to that farce in Salthill today. You’d be better off counting seagulls below on the prom than be watching that game. The best of 2 very poor teams came out on top today.

That ryan o Donoghue is a dirty wee fecker

The best of very poor teams?

    - Mayo All-Ireland finalists 2021.

    - Galway All-Ireland finalists 2022.

    - Both got to a league final in 2023.

    - Mayo league champions 2023.

    - Galway Connacht champions 2023.

    - Mayo beat the All-Ireland winners and finalists in 2023.

Perhaps not at the level of Kerry or Dublin but both poor teams they are not.

At least TSG had the goulies to call up the nasty O Donoghue Stamp. Be interesting to see if anything comes of it....I'd say McStay will be having a sweat

Its not about their record. Its the two teams that were on the field today. Neither played well. Hence being referred to as poor.

I won't call it fact, actually it's closer to lazy analysis.

Dublin are not the team they were, Sure they'll beat up on the likes of Sligo but didn't have their own way against better teams like Roscommon or Kildare.

As a Mayo fan I'd like them in the QF draw, Mayo preform better against teams that don't use a blanket defense.

As for Kerry, I don't think hammering Louth is the answer to their problems.

Yes it put them in a better position but they were poor v Mayo and relatively poor v Cork, they rely too much on David Clifford when others are not firing.

I still think it's wide open.

Tyrone looked very impressive in there win over Donegal. They are starting to tick when it matters. Derry and Armagh have a fortnight off it will be interesting to see them next week.

The draw will tell a tale tomorrow morning at a guess

    Dublin V Mayo or Cork

Kerry V Tyrone ( it's the tie Tyrone want)

    Armagh V Monoghan

    Derry V Cork/ Mayo.

Cork were more impressive yesterday than many think. Depending on how bad Hurley was injured it took guts by Cleary not to risk him. Playing Kelly and Comer backfired on Joyce

Cork are in bonus territory and will play with panache, they probably have as good a MF as is in the country. This week's game will have given players confidence that they can push on. If Hurley is back they will be hard to handle

    They are bang average.

They rely heavily on three players, and once those three fade Galway fade.

They have no depth and don't score enough.

Three lines used by myself to describe Galway back in the start of April before a ball was kicked in the championship

And I got plenty of push back for it, but it certainly was the case today.

Some score from Cillian O Connor, off his bad foot, away to local rivals , at a crucial stage in his first play back from a long term injury. In a game Mayo won by a single So glad The Sunday Game showed it ……:..

But sure it’s all in days work for a player like Cillian who has done it so consistently for so long. Doesn’t need highlighting. Long may he continue to just kick frees and easy scores

I'd go with that but expect Dublin to get numbers into defensive positions from here on in. They've only done it in snatches but at times they've fully retreated and generated fierce pressure on the ball. I expect them to go hard down this road in the games that really matter.

That said I'd be worried if Dublin draw Mayo in the quarter final. The intensity and dynamism that Mayo can bring might catch Dublin on the hop. Sligo, Kildare and even Roscommon don't come close in that regard so there's a chance Dublin are undercooked. More confident if it was a semi or a final running into Mayo. Be careful what you wish for but i'm hoping Dublin draw Monaghan.

Not a great performance by Mayo today but as usual enough to beat Galway when it matters.

The Artane boys band hasn't been a worry for the Galway team in 25 years.

Absolutely. Hasn't had much game time this year with injury, but has put together some highlight reel of scores!

    Today off his left foot.

Against Roscommon out on the wing into a gale.

Kicked an unbelievable one off his left vs Armagh in the league too.

Have thought for a long time Cillian's the most underrated forward of his generation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,635 ✭✭✭✭km79

His problem has been he has been too consistent. For over a decade he has done it season after season. Leading his county to All Ireland finals where a miss is highlighted. He might have been more appreciated it if he just did it sporadically with the occasional Provincial title victory and not reaching All Ireland finals…….

2 or 3 posters in particular will be AWOL no doubt!

Hilariously quiet from a few prolific big lads on here!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 596 ✭✭✭crusier

With all due respect ye beat a Galway team riddled with injuries, ye went out in the second half intent on injuring Sean Kellys ankle, it's no wonder ye can't win an all Ireland and won't do any time soon. Everyone knows Galway will win one ahead of ye. I'd be embarrassed to be from Mayo watching Ryan O Donoghue on the Sunday game trying to deliberately injure a player. I've no doubt the instructions came from the top at half time.

Firepower wasn't there for Galway this year.  Galway's scoring this year against div 1 opposition in league and championship coming into that game was 2-8,0-8,0-16,1-9,1-13,1-8,1-13,0-11,1-13,0-16, and 1-12 that's an average of 14 points per game.

Mayo scoring 1-10 enough to win which was one point less than they managed against Cork last week in a 3 point loss.

Can we spare a thought for the lads who were giving out about the current system a few weeks ago? The "24 games to eliminate 4 teams" lads?

Last weekend produced a number of games that were won by a single point or decided with the last kick of the ball, which determined the makeup of this weekends games

This weekend produced great games - of 4 games, 3 were won by a single point. 3 of those winners would have been out in group stages if the preQF didn't exist. Mayo, Tyrone, Armagh, Cork etc with some great trajectories so far.

We are heading into a QF round now with unquestionably the best 8 teams in the country at the moment. Are these lads still worrying about "jeopardy" I wonder?

Sure Mayo were riddled with injures last year and Galway only beat them by a point.

As someone said earlier on the thread thems the breaks.

    Dublin v Mayo

    Armagh v Monaghan

    Kerry v Tyrone

    Derry v Cork

For those who thought the thread was bad last week with Mayo and Galway supporters having snipes against eachother it's only going to get worse with Mayo Vs Dublin
