Gun Smiths - Ireland

Good morning,

We have a nice old ladies 410 hammer gun that needs to be re jointed and the hinge pin rotated.

In the past our SxS English guns all went to UK to a gunsmith for work. However he has since retired and along with Brexit UK looks to be more of a pain the the backside going to Uk.

Is there any actual gunsmiths who can do repair works and jointing on old English guns? too many just do a bodge job and this gun has both sentimental and historical value.

No sure if we have qualified smiths to do the job, however, if it's major work the gun may need re-proofing.

Might be cheaper/simpler to sent to UK/NI etc.

Gerry Gearon in Knocklofty ( Tipperary) re-jointed a SBS hammer gun for me a few years ago but has since retired due to ill health unfortunately. He was the only 'London Trained' Gunsmith I knew of in the country , and a good one at that!! His son Maurice carried on the trade for a while , but he has also packed it in as far as I know. I don't know of anyone else with the skill set to complete such work, but someone else may do. Brexit has added all sorts of problems when looking at sending stuff over for repairs, not to mention the cost! Just my comment , which doesn't solve your problem unfortunately !

The north at least could drive up and not worry about delivery costs

uk prices seem to be fair it’s just getting it over and back adds cost and paperwork

have relations in Uk and few gun smiths close to them. Wonder how hard would be get paperwork to bring gun with me to them.

I heard there used be one person around however retired many years ago.

last few jobs we got don’t looked like a bridge job in farmers shed.

think it’s off to Uk

Peter Mc Gee in Newport Co Mayo. Dealt with him once ,I bought my Savage combo gun off him,but that was over 15 years ago,so dunno if he is still in the biz.Had a nice stock of English and other double guns at the time.
