So Prigozhin is now a proud citizen of Belarus? LMFAO

Hugely disappointing day tbh. Had hoped to see the war brought to the streets of Moscow and a bit of reality for the Russians and a small window into what the Ukrainians are facing every day.

Prigozhin off to Belarus, cosy office job, 14 stories up, with a beautiful view of the ground.

Breaking news: Prigozhin to be the Guest of honour at the Dublin pride march next year, on condition he shares the role with Elton John.

It's less bizarre than the reality.

is this the 2023 version of the 1991 coup that didn’t succeed but the Soviet Union collapsed by the end of the year ?

I still can't get my head around it. All that to get to live in Belarus, always looking over his shoulder.

There is so much more to this.....

It's like Prigozhin was on the vodka last night and gave orders and continued drinking until 5am and then woke up mid afternoon to find a hangover and a change of mind.

Sure haven't we all got things bought online that we didn't remember ordering. 😊

So what will happen the Wagner group? Will they all leave Ukraine, or have they already done so? How does this play with Ukraine's counter-offensive chances?

Also, silly question too maybe, but have Moscow stopped paying Wagner, and if so, since when?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,458 ✭✭✭zv2

It might be that Prigozhin expected to gather an army of recruits and followers on the way to Moscow but it didn't happen.

It looks like history is starting up again.

A reminder today after this evenings development that this offensive by Putin is not over in Ukraine.

There's numerous ways anyone can help ease imposed suffering in Ukraine. This initiative is just one of those. Don't mind the UK bit ta feck. You're helping Ukraine they won't turn down help and vehicles, equipment and drivers if you really want to help.

This means that Ukraine's victory over russia is inevitable, this is the march to Berlin moment, there is more bloodshed and deaths on that march but the outcome won't be changed.

The putinbots have nowhere to go.

The putin apologists and trump lovers and anti-eu loons have nowhere to go.

They will debase themselves on that march, but the outcome is now inevitable.

russia has sh*t it's pants globally and has no viable way of coming back, the vultures are circling.

The mocking will be intense, but they will have to let go.

Perhaps Prigozhin was backed by a third party and just as he was getting going he was hung out to dry. End of Wagner + a rattled Putin

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,432 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

But then Putin hardly comes to a deal and says "Ah, off ya go there ya little scamp ya!"

It's weird. I can't buy into the suggestion it was staged either, because Putin got no profile out of it. He'd want to be seen as the strong man getting the army sorted and back on track if it was staged for whatever reason

Is there anything in world history that compares? Prigozhin crossed the Rubicon but it's water under the bridge suddenly? Bizarre stuff

Was hoping for more really. Even tho its seems to be over it has bound to have weakened putin.

Its very medieval but this time we saw it unfold live so to speak.

Says a lot about where Russia is at in terms of political evolution.

Back during the Chinese warlord days after the fall of the Qing and even when fighting the JAPANESE their country was similarly chaotic.

Yeah, not buying it either. I'm sure Putin knows who his opponents are already.

Flushing out opponents like this sounds a bit like Ivan the Terrible and his "abdication" in the 16th century - but it's not the 16th century any more (although with Russia, you sometimes need to check the calendar to make sure).

    It's all over for Prigozhin.

Prigozhin has basically surrendered, albeit with favourable personal terms. Putin has thrown out charges of treason in exchange for exile. His role as head of the semi-independent Wagner organization is over. He will never again be a threat to Putin.

As for Wagner, they will be subsumed as an organ that is completely subordinate of the Russian MoD.

Its not over. Where did you read that they abandoned those cities and those bases?

This isn't over by a long shot.

This is just current face saving to stop the capital getting wrecked on live TV.

    That's not what happened.

    a) Everyone now knows that you can roll to moscow unopposed (in less than 3 days).

    b) putin is now at the beck and call of his underlings and has shown he will give whatever terms are requested to retain power.

    c) If Prigozhin is threatened in anyway the roll to a defenceless moscow begins again.

    d) The americans and chinese will be laughing at russia in unison as they are over as a world power, they will be planning on what to do with the spoils when the collapse occurs which is now inevitable due to the fragility of putins position.

    In exchange for exile?

He's basically gotten away from one of the most dangerous places in the world.

Why wouldn't another legion try a similar coup? Will you have to retire them to safety in Belarus too?

You don't restore order in a coup with nicety. It's kill or be killed usually, I would have thought.

It makes no sense for someone as ruthless as Putin to fold here as if Prigozhin had compromising photos of him or something.
