I'm missing your point about the vaccine manufacturers. They didn't control uptake. Infrastructure (like mentioned in the Forbes article) included vaccine rollouts in states, and I imagine TiFG voting states did a poorer job with it. Likewise lockdowns and social distancing didn't happen there, my fav example being South Dakota which ran their old fart motorcycle fest twice during the pandemic, with big uptakes in Covid afterwards. So I think the conclusion that partisanship (GQP kool-aid drinkers) -> More Covid and Trump himself with his nonsense of pulling masks off on the balcony at the WH, as well as abject stupidity like ivermectin, led to more deaths.

Ahwell is correct insofar as 10% worse is actually a pretty big number when you think about it - that's 10% more dead people.

My point is that not everything is controlled by partisan political responses.

If Republican voters are only looking for Trump to tell them what to do then they would have taken the vaccine when Trump told them to.

The manufacturers of vaccines are separate from the political process in some sense. If I don't trust Pfizer for whatever reason, what does that have to do with Joe Biden or Donald Trump? Or with politics even?

Since when are medical issues purely political? Since never.

So the Republican Party being the political party most strongly associated with anti-vaccine attitudes in the western world is just a coincidence and has nothing to do with Trump, the GOP and the conservative media politicising the pandemic?

Interesting that prior to this pandemic, the biggest anti vaxxers would have been on the left/democrats/hippy types. Pretty sure they're still there, just a lot quieter about it

I didn't say it was a coincidence, obviously. I said something about Trump's specific stance vs behaviour of Repub voters. Tired of repeating myself and its tedious for everyone so I'm out.

The Republicans had become the anti-science party quite some time ago.

Fox continues walking back the wannabe dictator chyron

They could have easily seen most of their military viewership plummet had they doubled down on that clap (undermining chain of command)

A root canal? How will he ever recover from this

Am I the only person who doesn't think root canals are that bad? You don't feel anything anyway. Unless he was sedated or something, then he would need time off. Not exactly newsworthy either way though lol

Never had one but it's nothing. If trump was having a root canal and people were suggesting he wasn't fit for office as a result then fox would be ridiculing them.

Have had three. First off, you're in a lot of discomfort and pain to get you to the endodontist in the first place. Then, it's several lidocaine (or whatever they use) injections, a good stint in the chair and when the lido wears off, its pretty miserable for a day or so.

And I wasn't 80 when I had them. There may be additional medical precautions taken due to the importance of the patient, like having a cardiac team in the next room, doctors monitoring BP while it's going on, etc.

Note: my experience was in the US, probably pretty close to what Biden underwent. Not sure what they do in Ireland, likely to be similar.

I know people make jokes about Biden's gaffes and so on, but there comes a point when people have to take a serious look at whether he is the most suitable candidate going foward. The scale of and frequency of the so-called "gaffes" seems to be increasing over time, not decreasing. When you take an individual gaffe, it can be dismissed. But the sheer volume is what we're talking about here.

Douglas Murray was talking the other day about how the United States and its "gerontocracy" is somewhat unique i.e. referring to Biden and Trump; and that what's needed from Democrats (and Republicans) is a candidate a generation down. I think both Democrats and Republicans would do well to veer in this direction rather than the kind of thing we've seen over the past decade.

On the issue of "gerontocracy" , I think the key reason that the younger generation aren't making the break through is because of how toxic the political scene is in the US in the last ~15 years or so.

Anyone that has come on the scene in that timeframe had either dealt out or been on the receiving end (often both) of extremely partizan vitriol making it very difficult for them to "reach across the aisle" as it were. the level of utter hatred between both sides has become utterly all consumingly toxic.

This makes it very difficult for them to attract the national level bi-partizan support needed to win a Presidential election.

The older players have at least an historic track record that they can lean into.

Hard to see how that changes to be honest.

    Happy Juneteenth.

Beau summarizes the findings of the DOJ in regard to the Minneapolis Police Department, which evidences systemic racism at the department since January of 2016, including 100s of uses of illegal choking incidents and unlawful arrests and illegal and lethal use of force. Minneapolis PD is now under consent decree with the federal government where the department will effectively be overseen by the FBI until it completes top-down reforms.

We have reasonable cause to believe that MPD and the City engage in a pattern or practice of conduct that violates the constitution and federal law. First, MPD uses excessive force, including unjustified deadly force and excessive less-lethal force. Second, MPD unlawfully discriminates against Black and Native American people when enforcing the law. Third, MPD violates individuals’ First Amendment rights. Finally, MPD and the City discriminate when responding to people with behavioral health issues.

GOP - The DOJ is biased - they will never prosecute a Dem!

    (DOJ prosecute a Dem)

GOP - The DOJ is biased - they offered a plea deal!

What was the figure mentioned here recently?

90%+ of federal cases end in a plea deal wasn't it?

And it was a deal made by Trump appointed US Attorney

Rep. Lauren Boebert is bringing articles of impeachment against Joe Biden to the House Floor in a privileged motion, meaning that every member of Congress must vote on holding Biden accountable.

Would love to see the reasons.

I believe it's safe to say that Boebart is devoid of reason...

I actually hope this goes ahead.

If it’s anything like the Schiff vote, then democrats will come out looking good.

Each and every day, the McCarthy led GOP House fail miserably to organize that piss up in the brewery they so desire.

Schiff speech as Republicans try to censure him, for reasons that are still as clear as mud to me

Lauren Boebert's effort to rocket-docket articles of impeachment against Joe Biden has been effectively quashed by Kevin McCarthy.

Boebert, as did X-president Trump with his wall (now fence) focused on illegal southern border crossings. When NPR 16 January 2019 reported that only 38 percent of illegal immigrants entered the USA via illegal border crossings, while 62 percent entered legally but overstayed after their visas expired. See “For 7th Consecutive Year Visa Overstays Exceeded Border Crossings.”

Consequently, there is something problematic with all the Republican anti Biden politically motivated impeachment rhetoric led by Boebert and MT Green that focuses on the southern border. Especially when it’s understood that for several decades both Republican and Democrat administrations have failed to substantially solve the illegal immigration problem.

The terribly oversimplified Borbert and Green positions conveniently overlooked that there are 3 branches of government, and that the US Congress, which they are a part, legislates immigration laws, not executive branch president Biden.

Congress also appropriates the funds to pay for enforcement of those laws by the executive branch president Biden, and it has not been sufficient over decades for both Republican and Democrat administrations to do so. For example, even their beloved Trump whom campaign promised to build his thousand plus mile wall (now fence) failed to get one peso from Mexico and little from Congress.

Further, historically Congress has failed to pass a realistic immigration bill to solve this complex problem, especially when the vast majority of illegal immigrants overstay their visas and only 38 percent illegally cross the border.

And we have not mentioned the added complexity of the 3rd judicial branch of government where immigration judges have the jurisdiction or authority to determine the removability, excludability, or deportability of immigrants.

So when you summon The Mirror Mirror on the (southern) Wall Lauren Borbert and Marjorie Taylor Green, don’t be surprised by what your impeached minds see!
