Cattle trailer

On the lookout for a cattle trailer for the jeep (land cruiser LWB).

was thinking of 10x6 but a 10 x 5 has come up. Is there any major difference in the slightly smaller one. Wouldn’t be doing a huge amount of work with it.

As mentioned above there's probably a lighter grade hitch on the 10x5 as opposed to the 10x6. A 10x5 with the wheels outside will be no wider than the wing mirrors on the jeep which is a bonus on narrow roads, in towns and tight entrances. The 10x6 will be straddling the white line on most roads and you want to watch meeting cars, going through towns ect.

The 10x6 will carry 3 big cattle comfortably where the 10x5 will struggle. A big cow will stand crossways in 6" but not in 5" and won't put the same pressure on the sides when turning ect. They used always say about cattle lorry bodies that an inch in the width was as good as a foot in the length for capacity.

Is it an option to buy a trailer without brakes and put brakes on it afterwards. What would the cost be?

Shop around for the parts . I put new shoes and cables on a twin axel lt85.

Shoes cost 85 for all 4 corners , cables 50 for the set of 4. All were genuine knott parts .

The same shoes 200x50 are on the DP 3.5t cattle boxes

Berlingo can only tow 1.4 tons, 10 by five is probably 750kg so once you put 700kg in it it's overweight

A 10x5 is plated as a 2.7 ton trailer so legally a Berlingo can’t even pull it empty.

I'm quite sure that's incorrect. As I was corrected on it before and I checked it out.

Plated weight of a trailer will limit the max weight it can carry, but towing weight for the vehicle is the actual weight of a trailer.

So of you pull a 3.5 tonne trailer on a berlingo as long as the actual weight of the trailer doesn't exceed its towing capacity its fine

A Landcruiser lwb or swb cannot pull a 3.5 tonne trailer fully loaded. They don't have a 3.5 tonne capacity. One needs a DMAX or Ranger type pickup

You'll absolutely need a BE licence. The only trailer I can tow behind the Dmax without a licence is 750kg, because the GVW of the dmax is 3500kg. Perversely I could tow a bigger trailer on an octavia if the total train weight doesn't exceed 3500kg

It will only be used with the tractor for moving a few cattle between fields. I'm thinking of getting a tow bar attachment for the three point hitch, unless there are there hook drawn trailers available to buy?

Nice one, thanks. That is one thing that would concern me. It's a Mf390 I have and the hook is fairly deep between the back wheels. The idea of a three point hitch tow bar attachment is something that has become appealing to me, they look fairly handy:

The current trailer I have for turf etc only has 2 wheels so this didn't even cross my mind. I'm sold on the three point hitch attachment. I was thinking I could even lift the hydraulics to take the weight off the front wheels to get it over a curb or a deep pothole!

Yes there is a drawbar but it's the bother of pulling out the pick-up hitch as you say.

On my old zetor the arms could be lifted up but I don't think it's the case with the 390 if I'm not mistaken, the setting lever is the fixed positional type. It only gives me an inch of wiggle room up and down to attach the implements anyway.

We were taking cattle to the factory yesterday morning. We had a 12X6 and a 10X6 box. Cattle were 700kg friesians

The 10X5 could fit 3 quite easily. The 12X6 struggled to carry 5. When loading into the 10X5 the first two go to the front and I e invariably tries to turn the one besides him stops him. The third pushes up slightly between them. There seemed rakes of room.in the box. I cannot say the same for the 12X6 it was a definate struggle to load them. Nearly 50%more area, a foot wider and 2' longer and except they were friesians and I have a good loading area we would not have got them into the 12X6.

We said in future we will sort them and put the three bigger lads into the 10X5

Often brought 5 pedigree limo sucklers in a 12 x 6. Never any bother loading them. Ranged from 650 to 800 kgs.

10x5 = 50sq ft divide by three animals = 16.66 sq ft per animal.

12x6 = 72sq ft divided by five animals = 14.4 sq ft per animal

Makes sense to load the bigger cattle into the 10x5 if you are trying to get five into the 12x6

Them 12 foot boxes are mostly shy of 6 foot wide ,mostly I would say 5 foot 8 inches wide

It depends on the make, Ivor Williams are 5"10, Porter, Hudson ect are almost dead on 6 foot. Some other makes aren't much with 5"6 so it depends on the trailer.

Whatever works works but I can't honestly say I've ever had much bother carrying 5 fair sized cattle on my own 12x6 Porter. Some cattle aren't great to load/travel they don't stand right ect and make everything more difficult.

I put 6 500kg odd stores on my own trailer one evening (there was only supposed to be 5 but then there was 6 to be carried). Only that I had help and a good secure spot to load them it wouldn't have worked but they did fit.

The Rav was overloaded then not to mind overloading it by more. I thought the towing capacity of them was only 1500 kg.

it is one thing fitting 6 cattle 500kg each into the trailer but you would have to be thinking of the weight you are carrying as far as I know the max weight of trailer and load should not exceed 3500Kg and if you take the weight of the trailer as 1100kg then the cattle can't exceed 2400kgs which is 4 cattle at 500Kg. It probably is not something we think about when we load the trailer but could become a major issue if involved in an accident.
