In fairness they don't to nearly the same extent as other teams. They always went man-for-man even against Dublin in their prime.

Galway have been far more of a blanket defense team for the past 10 years but you'll rarely hear than in the cliched commentary on the Sunday Game - all you'll hear is about 'nice footballers' and 'handy forwards'.

Not confident at all, we struggle against teams that pull everyone inside their own half, Galway and Derry are the two worst opponents we could get in the championship, at least it's not in McHale Park where there's no space.

If we changed 6 we'd have some hope but they seem to have hung their hat on Loftus, he's nowhere near good enough at CB

Ah the thing about Galway is they adapt even peak Dublin used to funnel fellas back. Galway have come along way from a a div2 final they played against Kildare a few years back CP. Where both sides sat looking at each other and neither seemed to want the ball. Galway has been a slow evolution and they are definitely making use of what they have.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Not a Mayo or Galway fan, I'd imagine injuries on the Galway side could have an impact with Sean Kelly, Comer and McHugh all injury worries (as far as I know). Both with full teams, I'd probably just about go for Galway, but injuries could swing it towards Mayo. Looking forward to it.

Good post Green & Red. As harmless as it was, Shane Walsh was sorry he started that little shemozzle.

If Kelly and Comer are out or even just subs, I think Mayo have a good chance. I know it shouldn't just come down to 2 players, but if they do start (Kelly in particular), it will so much tougher. Kelly is the main man on that team, and it’s his runs up field that drive on the team, and works as a distraction to allow other forwards to get a yard on their men. Without that leadership, I think they will be very ordinary at the back. I think Padraic Joyce will hold off on naming them anyway. And it puts Mayo in a dilemma in terms of game plan, if they then see Kelly lining up at full back at 3 bells on the Sunday, and Comer in at 14.

If it comes to height and strength etc. I would worry about our lads around the midfield area – Galway have some athletic but also ballplayers in there – Cooke, Conroy, Maher, McDaid etc. That will be a tough one for Mayo. Pushing up on the kickout and forcing Gleeson to go long may not be the best option for Mayo in the long run. Hopefully we can get more game time out of Tommy Conroy, and Cillian O’Connor to be introduced for the last 20. If we can get Sam Callinan and Enda Hession back to their league form, it will be a huge plus.

I don’t know what will happen. All of the above are if, buts, and maybes. But I cannot wait for it.

Isn't it fairly accepted that Comer will play? Nobody in Mayo believing otherwise.

We saw the knock Kelly took and I'd say he's 50/50

PJ has consistently down the years brought players back early or played them while injured.Im thinking particularly Comer off the bench heavily strapped recently.Or the same player vs Mayo in 2020 Covid Connaught final when he limped onto the pitch and was gassed by the time he got into position

Comer will absolutely play some part.

The last time Galway tried to play football against Mayo was early in PJ'S management in the Covid League game in Tuam in October 2020.Mayo scored 2-17.....in the first half!

That was a steep learning curve for PJ and the last time they didn't go full shawl versus Mayo.

Exactly. The league final was basically 55 mins plus of Mayo with 14/15 behind the ball and Galway probing badly around the edges. Galway played their part in it by being way too slow with their transition but still, there was only one team leaving two up at all times.

This is Mayo's to lose anyway. If they can't beat Galway with Galway probably missing 4 starters, then they're going nowhere. Home advantage means zero in this one. If anything its the other way, most Galway fans would prefer Castlebar and most Mayo fans seem to think they'll have a better chance in Salthill.

That time half the country knew ye were training away during total lockdown? Horan really paid no repect to covid restrictions did he? From sneaking extra backroom members into the 2020 final, to the infamous kit van incident in Sligo, to lockdown training twice

To be honest, it was more fool Joyce that year, throwing a team together after 6 months that had barely looked at each other before. Thankfully he's slowly losing his naivety

I agree that Galway play defensive. But Mayo can also play with 15 behind the ball. Mayos problem is they dont have the forwards to break down defensive structures. Dublin & Kerry will also play defensive when they have to. The difference is that they can break down oppositions set ups

God it's an awful pity the two of them can't be knocked out.

Was speculation that the All Ireland Quarter finals would be played in provincial venues this year but not so as its confirmed this afternoon that all 4 will be played in Croke Park on July 1st and 2nd

You must have been watching a different league final to me

Maybe he's not using your rose tinted glasses

Possibly, but you'd need to factor in that the winning team is out again 6/7 days later - and playing one of the top teams in the country. Does the manager risk everything for the Mayo match - with Comer or Kelly worsening an already bad situation. Or does he hold them back, and hope to God they get past Mayo, and that both make a full recovery by the following weekend. It's a tough dilemma.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 596 ✭✭✭crusier

It would be a gamble but I think Galway should rest Kelly and Comer even if they are near fitness. Take the gamble or introduce them late in the game. If we get through we should be strong for the quarter final if we get there, I think there's enough depth in the squad to beat this Mayo team without Kelly and Comer, Galway have the forwards and it's time they clicked. Mayo have been over achieving for way too long and it's caught up with them recently. Mayo will target Walsh again for off the ball attention I've no doubt, hopefully there's a strong ref for this match. Hernon in for Kelly at fullback where he did a great job v Heslin in Rd 2 , Maher into mid field, Sweeney to half back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭MattressRick

Galway need more firepower than that in the full forward line.

They replaced Comer on Sunday with Sweeney and obviously he doesn't play inside. Galway's play followed the same trend, very very indirect.

We need a lad to replace Comer who'll show for the ball. Culhane maybe.

Anyway I expect Comer to play some part. He'll be risked.

Kelly to me is a bigger loss. He's so direct and creates or scores such important scores. I can't see him being right, doubtful even for a quarter final. Even if he does return he surely wouldn't be right for a serious amount of galloping up the field.

Am surprised the Galway v Mayo match hasn’t sold out yet.

Is Sean Mulkerrin still around the Galway panel? Looked decent before that bad injury and would naturally slot in full-back vs. Aido

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭MattressRick

Was warming up on Sunday during the match so he should be good to go. Obviously very ring rusty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭Barlett

Ah you do that and Galway will be beaten, sure Walsh might as well be missing too for all he's contributing this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,938 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

Not contributing and not meeting the ridiculously high standards he's expected to meet are two different things. I mean in the three round robin games he scored more collectively than any Mayo player in their round robin games. And Galway had two division one teams. And Walsh has three players on top of him if he even considers looking at the ball.

It would seem his under performance would be an over performance in Mayo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭Barlett

Scoring expected points, versus kicking your clutch 'do or die' scores are two very different things as we know only too well in Mayo. Sure all those arguments you've made are the exact same issues Mayo forwards have faced for the last 12 years.

    That's lovely.

But relying on one guy to get the bulk of the scores is a problem, and when that player underperforms, like Walsh did on Sunday you end up in bother.

Now I don't think Galway are the worst for heavily relying on one player, that award goes to Kerry and David Clifford, but I'd prefer my scores to be consistently coming from a spread of players than just one.

I would expect more of a Connacht semi final than a Connacht final crowd at this - maybe 18-20k.

"Lets go the the preliminary quarter final" doesn't quite get the excitement going with the casual fan. I liked the Off the ball idea "Wild Card Weekend"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭Barlett

Agreed, think they need to spruce up the names of these stages somewhat

5 points from play in 3 matches? One less than renowned sharp shooter Jordan Flynn.

The longer we can keep the GAA away from all that Yankee "Super Sunday" bullsht the better.
