The 'ooooh' 'ahhhhh' wonder I used to get with open world games, specifically thinking of things like Fallout 3 is long gone at this stage. I used to spend hours walking around the wastelands in that game amazed by everything.

Definitely find open world just a bit of a chore these days. Really don't have time to sit down to play a game for an hour not to achieve anything other than walking around a massive landscape.

It's definitely a 'me' problem though and not the game. Could imagine getting totally lost for months in things like BOTW as a kid when I had all the time in the world to kill!

Absolutely, this is definitely subjective. There's kids out there right now absolutely lost in the land of Hyrule playing TotK, and that's how it should be I suppose. Me, like you, if I've got an hour or 90 mins even to play a game, I like to complete something in it...be a dungeon, a chapter, something. Wandering around for side quests isn't something I ever really bothered with, even in games that floored me like LttP and OoT.

I think the last big budget linear narrative game I played was Last of Us 2, and I loved every minute of it.

I think my affection for TotK/BotW stems from the fact it’s exactly the kind of game you would’ve bullshitted about on the yard on your break in school, if that makes sense.

Im saving all those open world games from when im bedridden and have nothing else to do🤣

Took a trip down to my local GameStop Saturday and here's the walls.

Got talking to the manager who'd knowe from coming in the last 20+ years. Turns out his parents come into me in work. Told him i want to get some more of the shelving.

Ended up with my van absolutely packed with the wire shelving and the flat back shelving about a ft deep. Absolutely delighted with it. Heading down Thursday to collect the wall bays and ill hopefully be able to pick up another few of them on the day and make a really cool display wall at home

Something nice to me about having some of the fittings from the shop I spent so much time (and money) in over the years

Yeah that's something a bit special, it's a little piece of time and nostalgia preserved with you now. You'd be missing a trick if you didn't call your new display the White Tiger ☺️

    Just arrived from @Jack burton

I reluctantly bought an unboxed Master System 1 in 2019, couldn't find a decent boxed one at all. Not even being fussy, just wanted something mostly complete in decent condition. They were always seriously ripped up or had spills/stains. On top of the fact the first gen console was nowhere near as common as the second gen and even those were in bits. They were never half as decent as a Mega Drive.

The final addition to the boxed Sega consoles that I want.

It was like Christmas day unpacking this, haven't had my hands on a nice console for 4 years!

I don't think there's too many big Atari fans here, but I am, so what the hell. Picked this up today...

    IMG_20230627_182332.jpg

Came up mint after a scrub. It's fully boxed, but the rubber in the cables is starting to react with the box innards, so I'll leave it out from now on. Complete with the light gun and joystick too. Delighted with it, never seen one in person until now.

I have an 800XL to pair it with, which I think is the slightly more desirable of the two, but seemingly this has a nicer composite output.

That is a beautiful looking machine, well bought.

I'd suggest getting a flashcart for it, some SD solution

Wow that's lovely, don't think I've ever seen one of them before. The design with the pastel colours really is something.

Cheers, yeah that'll be the plan, and as its compatible with the XL line too, the same cart will do for my 800XL too.

Had a quick blast there to make sure it's all working, seems perfect barring an oddity with BASIC (locks up when I hit Return after typing a command). The built in game Missile Command is pure Atari fun, and the other two carts run perfect too. Delighted with it. The BASIC issue could be it just needs a new chip burned for the motherboard, not really sure, I'll get to it eventually!

Yeah it's a pleasant enough looking machine, a definite departure for Atari and what they put out beforehand.

Good looking machine alright! I know nothing about it, time to dust off the aul Wikipedia at work.

Nice find ! Only remember ever seeing one in the flesh - in Peats of all places way back when. Large pastel buttons always made it stand out. Can't recall if the keyboard was with it, but I believe it was sold standalone or in a deluxe set as above. Of course back then, nobody gave it a second look what with the other options out there, but nice to see one surviving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,986 ✭✭✭Inviere

Yeah seemingly there was a Basic set with just the XEGS, and a Deluxe set with the keyboard, zapper, etc. Spot on, by the time it hit shelves the internals were really, really showing their age (it's an 8bit micro, competing with the Nes!) Atari were really asking a lot of it, but hey, that's Atari ☺️

I ended up getting Boulder Dash for mine, the only title I was really after for the system, and it is still pretty great!

Ahh Virtual Racing and janky as all hell Doom haven't been that bad so far. Kinda.

Some of the 32x game hacks are alright. :-P

Have you tried out the Doom Resurrection hack actually? I'm really doing it a disservice calling it a hack, it's incredible.

Two player split screen that actually runs really really well on it too. It really needs to be seen to be believed.

I have it on the Everdrive but waiting for my girlfriend to come for a visit again in a few weeks as she's a big Doom fan and I want to try it out with her.

Speaking of Doom if anyone ever fancies an Arcade & Retro LAN (erh... WAN?) of Doom I've compiled my own server and can host it locally. Tested it out over the Internet and seems to work well. :-)

Been meaning to dry out MyHouse.wad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,986 ✭✭✭Inviere

I gave myhouse a go there last weekend I brought it into Launchbox as an additional version of standard Doom, and said I'd play it for a few mins to make sure it worked. An hour later I was still glued to the screen, very, very cool mod.

John Romero plays through it a bit on his YT channel, also worth a watch

I made the mistake of watching John Romero playing through the whole thing one evening before playing it myself. Was a really compelling watch but kinda ruined it for myself now! ah well.

I'd love to have a Doom LAN some evening if you want to get a multiplayer game going. Might even be fun to play coop on Nightmare mode.

Seen a non working Model 1 Atari Lynx on ebay, and said I'd give it a go in terms of fixing it. If I can, it'll be nice to have both revisions of the Lynx

So it's not here yet but I've just ordered one of these:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32839751451.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.17.67201802dm6vDe

Should be able to pair it with a 9v PSU of about 2.5amperage and have one PSU power the Mega Drive, 32x and Mega CD all at the same time. :-)

Little bit more of an expensive option that I went for but works a treat:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,986 ✭✭✭Inviere

Was about to link the same item, I got one of those too. The person that runs the store is pretty highly regarded in the sense of quality power supplies. I've since bought quite a few more, one for my Jag arriving only this week! The 3-1 you linked is a more expensive than the usual ones listed on the site, obviously because it has to power a tower of power!

Latest get, have a ban on myself buying cabinets but with it nearby and at the price I couldn't pass it up although was an entire evening of work as usual getting something like this. Has anyone ever played it, I'm presuming it's not very good, golden tee rip off? No idea if it works, but was planning on converting it as its a typical Midway cabinet albeit different coin door.

A random bit of trivia. Seems to be a USA Midway cab, I find it weird that it seems some games were made in the USA and others were made on Licence or when it was sold at Atari Games/Namco Tipperary in the 90s, i.e. gauntlet legends, although I'm not sure they ever made that type of cabinet in Tipperary

I'm be utilizing the same PSU that this person uses 😉

I don't enjoy convenience. I like doing things the harder but ultimately cheaper way. 😉

Dave it must be costing you a fortune in storage fees. Elephant storage in Dublin is 200 per month for a small room that would holds 5-6 cabs.

Maybe you could do a killing instinct or mortal kombat conversion on that? Although the sports games were a slightly different shape/angle on the monitor with longer head:
