Looking at the PV output thread here tells me all I need to know, thanks for the thanks btw😉

You are right, there's no denying December and January are poor for PV and on the worst handful of days you produce very little (in my case my worst day of the year would be around 2kWh - an average house uses 10kWh per day). But the rest of the year more than makes up for it.

Also you do get paid handsomely for exporting when you have access that you can't use yourself if you have a smart meter. That compensates for the shortfall in winter too.

Nope, I got stung with the €50 break contract fee but the savings from the Flogas offer were over €200 so I just bit the bullet and went for it

Im a week after you, not going to be stung by the change fee, so I'm waiting to see what happens and whats available in july. I'm in credit anyway with energia so not likely to have a bill until nov-dec anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭JaCrispy

They are the worst months but I still got 5.5kWh daily average for December and 6kWh daily average for January. As you mentioned, the summer months more than make up for it. My total electricity bill for the year (after €630 of FIT) will be €435 and my payback is around 6 years. Where's the payback on EV, CoBo?

Sorry if this has been asked but what does the "BWG Exclusive" mean on that Flogas deal (https://www.flogas.ie/exclusive-elec-06-23.html)? These rates are way better than my recent Energia rates (47.77 day, 22.91 night) so probably worth the contract exit fee

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭JaCrispy

This deal is supposed to be only offered to employees of the BWG group but my understanding is that this restriction is illegal. Regardless of this, you can sign up to this deal via an online hidden weblink (I have done this myself and currently enjoying the excellent rates on this tariff). Send me a PM and I'll respond with the link.

You dont need a hidden link you can sign up online

Joined Flogas over a month ago and yet to get first bill, through the portal you can submit a meter reading at ANY time ..

Do they send you an email or other when its the appropriate time to do it so that it reflects in your bill properly ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭JaCrispy

Sorry you are correct, the link was taken down a few weeks ago but it looks like it's back there now.

I submit meter readings on the first day of every month through the networks portal. Then leave it up to my supply company to decide when or how to bill. IMO submitting readings to the supplier gives them the option to ignore or whatever but if you send it direct to networks it gets sent to the supply company automatically.

With current low usage levels I want to avoid estimated bills so its in my interest to send in readings as often as possible.

Thanks for confirming! Do you know if there's a limit usage on the night rate? For example with Energia the night rate is 22.91 per kWh but jumps to 25.8 after more than 2,000 units confirmed in any 2 month period

This figures are pretty accurate (provided you have a 5-6kWp pointing somewhat S). So unfortunately the "4 hours" daylight in Dec is more like 1full h production wise / day (average)

I’ve trawled the fine print and couldn’t find a limit ….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,427 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

I signed up on the 20th of April and haven't received a bill yet. I didn't bother submitting meter readings as I have a smart meter and it does transmit regular readings to esbn as I can see them through the esbn portal.

Got my confirmation of switch to BWG offer email today. I actually got one for gas and one for electric. Don’t have gas but it’s probably just a system thing. 14 cent and night and 33 day inc Vat i good value in this climate. Works out slightly better than 30% electric Ireland discount I was on last year. Best they will do now is 5%🙈 so I guess that’s a 25% saving over staying with EI.

pity Flogas don’t have an app. I have solar coming in the next few months. But will stay on day and night for as long as I can

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭celtic_oz

I switched electric only and never got anything related to gas .. you might want to call them

They'll send an email when the bill it ready, I submitted a meter reading at the start of June and received a bill shortly afterwards

If you're receiving the FIT then you'll get a separate bill emailed to you with the FIT amount

so just put in a meter reading around the first of the month.. seems a bit random

I get the feeling things are a bit more manual there than some of the bigger companies

Although I wouldn't be surprised if EI have some dude manually entering the meter data that ESBN have to fax over (I'm joking, hopefully 😏)

What I did was work out the expected annual bill including FIT and divided by 12 to get the level pay amount of €60 per month. So for me the bills are really just a way of monitoring my consumption against expectations

Since opening the account I'm now €75 in credit after 1 bill and 1 FIT payment, so far I'm making more than I'm spending on import, but obviously winter will erase that gain

I think I'll submit a meter reading as it's 62 days since I signed up and I haven't heard anything from them. I thought they'd just get the reading automatically from the SM, that's how it worked when I was with BG.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭handpref

Did anyone receive something in writing that confirmed the BWG rates ?

Seems strange to sign up but get nothing in writing except a welcome email and bank details letter, no rates written anywhere except the web page.

Ive had energia onto me again with a bigger discount and credit (50) to my account -

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,427 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

What rate were they offering? Looks like Flogas are making waves the others might finally start making an effort to keep customers. BG sent me a survey yoke when I left but never attempted to make me an offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,162 ✭✭✭coolbeans

Is there any point in calling Energia and asking if they can improve their rates in light of the Flogas offer? I'm six months into Energia EV plan paying ca. 41c during day and 14c @ night? Standing charge is about the same. I'm perfectly willing to walk and suck up the 50€ cancellation charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭handpref

40c day 20C night inclusive of vat

    +€50 credit -

Im still in credit and reluctant to jump ship to a company that I haven’t managed to speak to anyone and no response from my email.

To be fair to energia the online account and billing works well, I get my fit and they always get back to me, it was the ‘retention’ team who contacted me, they can offer bigger incentives to try get you to stay, but I think they only ring you if another provider notifies them that you are jumping ship.

What value can you put on good communication ? It can be stressful chasing companies that aren’t set up to give good customer service.

I'm on an DN meter so not sure what the story with the smart meter is, I would have assumed they'd automatically get the reading every 2 months

It took about a week from submitting the meter reading to getting the bill

I've submitted a reading, maybe it will make a difference maybe it won't. Energia were feckers sometimes the bills could have been 67 days.

Are you able to get the Night Saver Meter plan if you have a smart meter on that FloGas BWG offer?

    https://www.flogas.ie/exclusive-elec-06-23.html

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,494 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

No you'll need to apply to ESBN to be changed back to a Day/Night meter (MCC2) before you can use a night rate plan

If you've already activated the smart meter then you might be stuck, I can't remember if anyone managed to switch back post activation

Esbn won't do the switch it needs to be done through your provider, good luck with that as most won't submit the request.
