    I do actually.

The BBC have 25k confirmed dead, based on graves by independent sources in Russia.

I have read comments that they think the real number is undercounted.

They think the actual number of dead is 50k.

210k killed, wounded, Out of action. conservative 50-60k killed prob higher if you put in sledgehammer lads. Out of action I would say is huge lost arm or leg. Wounded again big enough. Is the doctrine still the same for 1 man down 2-3 go get them back to treatment.

Then you add chechens, dnr and the forced conscripted in occupied territories.

It's a dam hard slog without air support and beening drip fed weapons to fight a larger force that isn't running away and ka52 attack helicopters who are able to pick off minefield creeping armour

I hope they can break through Russia will do everything to delay their advance.

    Don't see it ending soon

WRT the FT link about confiscating oligarch funds... A law is one thing (both houses must sign off and POTUS sign off), but once confiscation starts to occur, expect lots of lawsuits, probably going up to the SCOTUS because of the money involved. I'm interested in the legal justification for the confiscation of funds, which is what the new law will be about.

Plus the eye-watering sums will attract lawyers, probably good ones, not the flotsam we've seen floating around TiFG lately.

That was a very interesting article, also about the profile of the average soldier killed, from young professional soldiers a year ago to aged 30+ ex-criminals now.

Of course I'm sure some here will claim the BBC is a Pro Putin far left organisation and its journalism is far less reliable than what some random sensationalist on Twitter claims ....

Capable of change.......the one thing that dictatorships are not amenable to, and actively work to prevent. Kim Sung, Iran's Ayatollah, China's Xi, and of course Putin. None of the above mentioned are capable of willingly changing the status quo, and thousands of people who thought or tried to bring change paid for it with either their Freedom or Lives.

It started life as an economic union but is now very much a political one (that has greatly benefitted all member states). Fully agree your point about the long-term.

By the way, it would incredibly sad if any Irish people ever talked about pulling up the ladder and denying new states entry. Completely off-topic comment!

The bipartisan legislation introduced in the US Senate seems worthy of discussion.

And cuts the legs out from under the US voices calling for an end to Ukrainian aid - who can object if the Ukrainians are buying American weapons....with confiscated Russian money?

Russia has always been secretive about it war dead numbers. It has ne er even confirmed it's WWll numbers not to mind Afghanistan.

The UA gives figures of 210 k casualties for the Russians army. This more or less backed up by UK intelligence.

We did get figures from a leaked FSB memo last Autumn that stated casualty figures of around 50k to the end of August 2022. That was before the Autumn offencive by the UA, the assault on Bakhmut which cost the Russians dearly.

The BBC has confirmed at least 25k dead from the military grave yards it accessed.

Here's the link for the BBC article.

Interesting read. This is the identified dead from western sources

Not the actual number of dead.

The problem is there the American legal system will keep any money confiscated in the US tied up in court cases and it won't be getting spent on weapons anytime soon

There will be very little data on the prisoner war dead, especially those that were not recovered from the battlefield, as well these are only military graves that the BBC managed to access. We can assume that the real figure is substantially above that.

Also many wounded Russians are left to die because the Russians can't take care of them or don't want to.

It looks like history is starting up again.

There have been numerous reports of moskovytes abandoning injured troops and the bodies of there dead being left where they fell as well so to say the number of counted graves is any way indicative of total losses of putin's forces is comical. The war is in Ukraine and that is where putin is loosing troops. I know he would like to exclude the dead he has forced into battle from other parts of the russian federation and part of the number recorded by the Ukrainian armed forces is likely to include even people who were born in Ukraine who were forced to put on russina uniforms but I see no reason to dismiss the figures provided by the armed forces of Ukraine since they are the ones closest to the killing.

All sides engage in propaganda during war-time. The Russians tell such bald-faced easily disprovable whoppers that the Ukrainian stuff is more subtle by comparison.

I for one always take these numbers that their MoD regularly issue with a pinch of very large salt

    image.png

If we take just one of those figures, tanks. they're giving a number of 3955 losses (which I take to mean destroyed, damaged, captured & abandoned).

The Oryx database, in contrast has a figure of 2039, or 51.5% of the UMoD's figure. Now yes, Oryx only counts visually confirmed losses so that's going to be an undercount but I think it's safe to safe there is some major padding going on there.

There are about 18,000 tanks/vehicles/trucks there. If you average it out at 5 dead per vehicle you get 90,000 dead in vehicles alone. Add to that those killed by bullets, drones, artillery etc.

It looks like history is starting up again.

    25,000 dead and counting.

    BBC article with verified figures.

The Ukrainians vastly overestimate the numbers and the Russian's underestimate.

    That's not true.

That's the identified dead. Bagged and tagged. Full names, etc. Which is difficult when Russia is trying to cover everything up and cremete or bury troops without families or the public finding out.

The Russian death till is many x times greater. I'd say the UK and UAF sources are closer to the truth.

Regarding Russian casualties, the 200K figure might even be the understatement. Putin really does not care about how many serfs would die to keep himself in power. If there are "25k dead from the military grave yards", then the actual figure can easily be 10x more. These are only the bodies that were retrieved and brought back.

When a Russian tank exhibits a sudden explosive turret loss, the crew inside is simply minced into a paste. When Ukrainian troops advanced, they used to collect vatnik's bodies to put into refrigeration trains, but Russians refused to take them. So there are now thousands upon thousands of uncounted vatniks pushing the daisies in Ukrainian fields.

This is blatant misrepresentation of the article contents.

The 25,000 is not at attempt at estimating actual deaths. It is tracking deaths that they could verify. It is entirely false to present them as the same.

    The BBC Article states:

We identified more than 25,000 named individuals - people we know to have died - setting a bare minimum for Russia's total losses.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence estimates there are more than 200,000 Russian casualties - but this also includes the wounded.

Count does not include the Russian-speaking separatists in the Donbas.

Not all of Russia’s deaths are captured by our count - we can only pick up people mentioned in open sources, or on memorials and in cemeteries visited by volunteers. But the volunteers cannot cover all of Russia’s vast expanse.

Russia started this war with 150,000 troops camped out on the border of Ukraine. In September they had to conscript a further 300,000. They have less territory now than the initial 150,000 grabbed in the first weeks of the war. Clearly Russia have lost huge amounts of troops and equipment. Those results are atrocious for a modern army and clearly demonstrate they would have been better off not bothering with this war business at all. That’s all that matters.

As long as starting aggressive war can be demonstrated to be a waste of time in the 21st century that is the outcome we all desire. I opposed the Iraq war and that turned out to be a waste ditto Afghanistan. It is tragically stupid that great powers still see it as a valid enterprise but the Russia/Ukraine war is further evidence of its stupidity. War probably worked in the 19th century when great powers faced backward countries with little more than spears and bow and arrows. When all sides have guns and bombs war is just hell for everyone.

And how many Russians can you fit in a coffin? Probably get three in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,844 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

I know this war is unprecedented in terms of footage being recorded and posted. But look at it another way, do you really think we've seen all of the damage and destruction caused by this war. Or maybe we've only seen half? Anything outside of drone range (pretty much any HIMARS/stormshadow) strikes will not have drone footage for people to visually confirm it.

Which is absolutely irrelevant to the point the poster is making. So you're basically admitting the Ukrainian figures also need to be taken with a large pinch of salt, even if not as blatantly false as Russian claims?
