Hot water all the time

    Hi there


    Recently moved into our new house - initially we were using the heating for maybe an hour a day just to take the vacant chill off and then as the weather started to warm up we stopped. I had always assumed it was the heating that gave us hot water but we haven't had the heat on in about two weeks and we still have hot water.

    This is on a regular boiler with hot water tank in the hot press not a combi boiler etc. The immersion doesn't have a light but the switch is off. Might it be possible the switch is backwards? I haven't tried it yet but don't feel like that could be wrong. Otherwise is there some way to set the boiler to come on just to heat water and we just didnt know that was the case?

    Hi, yes, you might have a time controller on the central heating which is turning the boiler's DHW (domestic hot water) circuit on in the early morning. You should look for a controller with buttons and a display, like one of these for example:

    Assuming that the boiler isn't firing up occasionally then its easy enough to check the Immersion switch, run off say 20/30 liters of hot water, ensure no heavy elec users on like kettles etc, if you have the old type meter watch the disc rotating and then switch "off" the immersion, if the disc speeds up then the switch is the wrong way round, if you have a smart meter watch the flashing red LED, it will flash more rapidly.
