Grinds my gears that they're advertising a reduction in price on the floor pump before it's even gone on sale. Which is false advertising.

I think you can advertise a reduction on the RRP. So thet time they sold it, it was X price, but now it's y price.

I've worked in shops where we would have bought a job lot of jersies, say, and even though we weren't selling them before, we advertised the sale price based on the RRP in other shops

IIRC the guidelines are that if you want to advertise a reduction, you should have been selling it at the higher price for at least 28 days in the previous 90 days.

i read once that tesco (or one of the other big retailers) with their fantastic '50% off wine' reductions would do it by getting a wine that was never going to be anything more than a tenner a bottle, putting a tiny fraction of it on the shelves for 28 days at 20 quid, and after those four weeks were up, would put the stock out in bulk, marked as reduced from 20 quid to 10 quid.

from the competition and consumer protection website:

"Under consumer law, you must display the ‘prior price’ when you mark a product as on sale or promotion. You must also base any discounts, such as an amount or a percentage off, on this prior price. The prior price should be no higher than the lowest price that an item has been on sale for in the 30 days before a promotion starts."

they cannot declare a previous price because it has not been available at that price in the previous 30 days, is the way i'd read that.

Yeah, I'd read it the same way. Maybe they should market it as a reduction? I don't know. It' not the most egregious thing in my mind, as they used to sell it at the previous price listed

I see they're selling "eBike cleaner" - what happens if I use it on an ordinary bike?

Only S-M sizes on the adult helmet? Absolute discrimination against bigheads like me. Outraged.

Wait, was I supposed to be using a special "eBike cleaner" on my bike? Oh noes! Will my bike melt because I used ordinary bike cleaner?! 🤣

Finally have enough space for the bike stand after years of looking at them, a serious piece of kit, cant believe they're that heavy duty for the price.

loads of stock in Greystones earlier, I just bought some chain cleaner. Was tempted by the panniers but I really don't know if I'd ever use them as I already have a couple of those Cobags which are great for shopping.

Epic trolling from the Lidl specials team this week!

My local Aldi have reduced their cycling jerseys €9.99 €2.99 and jackets to €14.99 €4.99. Also saw some gloves and overshoe/helmet winter covers

Picked up a few of the aforementioned ebike cleaner in my regular lidl in the reduced section at half price. Dealz has been out of "no more dirty bike" the last few visits so this will do!

If you want powerful degreaser, get elbow grease, available in Mr price if you've one near you.

isn't there a risk with strong degreaser that you strip out the grease inside the chain links? I recently tried the chain-cleaning spray they were selling in Lidl but was unimpressed, the chain was still fairly dirty after a couple of applications.

In a way I'm sorry I ever watched all those videos on chain cleaning; I used to be fine with occasionally spraying a bit of WD40 onto the already dirty chain and tbh I never had any major problems as a result.

That's what I use on the drivechain alright, following a recommendation on here. That is generally available in dealz/ pepco. They have big bottles at the moment.

I only ever really use it on the chain when doing a proper deep clean. It's the one time I use wet lube, to get the thick gummy stuff back between the links after.

Picked up a third 'spare' set of their front and rear rechargeable lights for €5.99 in Rathnew. Unbelievable value. They're the Aldi version of the Lezyne ones... Lezyne Micro Drive 600XL + KTV Light Set, Silver | Bikeinn (tradeinn.com) I've still got the Aldi ones from about 5 years ago (the rear light eventually packed in on my winter bike from water ingress) and tbh, I prefer the Aldi light mode set up.

I use it in the chain cleaner gadget most cleans - it wouldn't be deep clean/ toothbrush/ GT85 levels of cleaning tbh. I haven't noticed any issues so far anyway.

That the pink or yellow one? Ive the pink and I'm always wary of using it on the cassette in case it gets into the hub

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,427 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

    i use the yellow one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,663 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Also the yellow one for me.

picked up a set of the lights as well (in Greystones, plenty left) - although they're marked as reduced from €7.99 to €5.99 it's actually the cheapo single-LED lights that were €7.99 and they've just thrown both types in together. I think the Cree light set was originally €19.99 so as you say, excellent value.

Also got some mitts for €3 which I'm sure (based on past experience) are rubbish but they'll do when I forget to wash my decent pair with the rest of my kit, which is every bloody time.

The lights are great, I bought a 2nd set as backup earlier in the year which is just as well. I went out one day and the front light attachment was a bit loose, but I didn't take the time to tighten it (it's held to the rubber mount strap from underneath by a hefty screw). Going up one of our finest L roads with a worse than usual surface I got the fright of my life when the light fell off and exploded (same sort of noise as breaking a tungsten bulb) with the back wheel going over. I'm guessing there's not a huge amount of thread actually gripping the body of the light, so my advice would be keep them tight,

I actually quite like Aldi/Lidl gloves most of the time. I find them quite comfortable even for longer spins but do find the stitching tends to give. If you're happy enough wielding a needle and thread, I find I'll get a couple of years out of them
