Celebrating wildly on the pitch having beaten Mayo in April and May (all 500 Galway supporters) is about galways level.

When the big boy football starts in Croker the shawl doesn't really work.

This is the only " narrative" you need

Finals in Croke Park in the last 5 years.

    Mayo Played 5 Won 3 Lost 2

    Galway Played 5 Won 0 Lost 5

yes you are correct it very hard to support 2 teams at senior level. Thankfully this group of players are restoring some pride to galway football and are developing into a good bunch, hopefully an all ireland winning bunch. What mayo do is of no concern to me. Green and red mention about filling the togs in croke park and i just reminded him of a day we didn't.

    Were cameras invented back then.

Lots of big talk here for a county with 1 less All Ireland than Tipp and only 1 more than Limerick 🤣

I guess PJ wasn't the only one moaning afterwards! I wouldn't be bringing up diving either after your captain's theatrics against Monaghan.

Shouldn't be that hard to support two teams when there is a clear geographical split between football and hurling in Galway and the county has twice the population as Mayo.

No reason as to why the support for the footballers has been consistently so poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,244 ✭✭✭cosatron

i didnt see many empty sits at the all ireland final last year. So if mayo had a competitive senior hurling team, do you think that they will be supported aswell as the footballers. When Joe Canning arrived on the scene allot of the football followers and football strongholds started going to hurling matches and are slowly filtering back towards the football and plus it bloody expensive to follow two teams who are at the tail end of the championship majority of years. You mention about the population of galway, its at 280,000, sure 20,000 of that are from mayo 😁 and another 10,000 are from roscommon and you can discount 80,000 in galway city so we are pretty even in GAA following stakes.

The great support for mayo hasn't did them much good...... Been a hindrance if anything..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,010 ✭✭✭WesternZulu

Using that logic the poor support for Galway has been an advantage over the years has it? 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,588 ✭✭✭MfMan

All right, let's leave it there, people passing the road are staring at us neighbours squabbling. Amazingly enough, in pub prior to Saturday evening's match, there were great cheers whenever Mayo scored against Kerry. Similarly, for Tipp on Sunday v. Limerick. What's the world coming to? There's hope yet for NI.

This is the only narrative you need:

    1951

    72 years and counting.

    Enjoy princess.

All Ireland Senior Football Championships won in the last 25 years:

    Galway: 2

    Mayo: 0

See, I can do this finals won thing too when I pick my own timeline. 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,903 ✭✭✭HBC08

I feel i might be wasting my time here but games from when before players were born or when they were toddlers like 1951 and 2001 have little bearing on today.

Let's look at the more relevant stats involving guys that play for galway and Mayo at the moment (you might have missed it as you didn't address it or comment on it)

Finals in Croke Park in the last 5 years.

    Mayo Played 5 Won 3 Lost 2

    Galway Played 5 Won 0 Lost 5

I'm guessing there'll be no reply or a really p1ss poor one like above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,550 ✭✭✭✭cson

The only reply is that, given the talent and funding at their disposal in that period, the only team that can be credibly accused of filling the togs when it comes to Croker on Championship days wear green and red. Savage talent, no Celtic crosses to show for it. Terribly sad tbh.

Mayo have beaten Galway every time we've played them in Croke Park in the history of the GAA.

Mayo have the best win ratio of any team outside of Dublin (and perhaps kerry, not sure on that) this century.Galway have the worst win ratio of any team with top 10 notions since the turn of the century.

These are unconfortable truths for the aristocrats and their shawl.

Also as to your earlier point about past glories,Mayo will be as worried about the Galway team of 98 as galway will be about the Mayo team of 51.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,949 ✭✭✭BENDYBINN

How in the name of Christ can you play 16 all Ireland finals and lose every one of them….are you for real?…….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,903 ✭✭✭HBC08

Haha! I dont know where you're getting those numbers from.

Anyway, back on planet earth it is a mad sports statistic that Mayo lost 11 finals since 89.I was at all of them and they all had their own story 96,2013,were the ones we should have won (possible the first day in 2016 also) when you see two own goals in an all ireland final in 7 mins you have to start believing in curses etc!

2017 the best final of the modern era,two teams at the absolute peak of their powers,a privilege to be at that game.Possibly the only time Dublin support was outnumbered in Croke Park ,a great summer and adventure.

We were no match for kerry in 04 and 06 and just happy to be there really, happy to be there in 89 aswell but could have won.

Didn't show up against Tyrone in 21 and kerry in 97 and those are the ones that bug me,no excuses, there for the taking.

Anyway,I know from you're posting history and indeed your nonsense post above that you're a wum and not interested in football talk but I'll throw this up here anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

How many of those finals mattered? Most here won't even know what they are for. Could be tiddlywinks!

I mean one of them is a Connacht Final ffs and we are the CURRENT Connacht champions!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,550 ✭✭✭✭cson

A great win ratio, but no Senior All Ireland in that period is an awful shame though, I think you'd agree?

Hopefully you get to see them lift Sam once in your life, I can tell you as a Galwayman its a great feeling.

The Round 3 thing is obv a mistake, the piece clearly refers to the Round One Group Phase, thats elf explanatory, let it go man. 😉

How difficult would a ticket be to come by for Donegal v Derry on 4th June? In the area, tempted by it but wouldn't fully commit till closer to the time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,903 ✭✭✭HBC08

"I'm guessing there'll be no reply or a really p1ss poor one like above"

    As expected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

Picking metrics is to suit your narrative is pretty easy.

    Let's stick with championship.

Let's stick with current form since you don't like to delve to deep into the past (for obvious reasons)

Who has better championship form over the last two seasons wins vs losses. Go.

Metrics are pretty simple. Why you've fixated on this Croke Park and finals is beyond me. Getting into finals usually means the opposition are not half bad. Nature of sport. Doesn't reflect on much. Especially when league finals are being included. We call them friendlies in Galway.

Your whole point is "pis$ poor". But an empty vessel makes the most noise kinda response is what I was expecting and you didn't disappoint. Saying something for the sake of it.

    Ah stop!

    "Let's stick with current form"

The current format hasn't even happened in it entirety yet so not too sure what you're on about there.

The only knock out championship game between galway and Mayo in the recent past was 2019.....who won that?

You're making a fool of yourself talking about tiddlywinks and princesses and I'm really enjoying it.

A few galway fans seem to be getting caught up in the hype and getting a bit over emotional like their manager.

Leaving aside the league finals wins if you want to (all were Mayo wins this century by the way) When's the last the time galway bet Mayo in a knock out game?

By my reckoning it was 1998?

    Lol

Calm down lads,ye will either do it in Croker or ye won't, history in the last 20 years would suggest the latter.

Edit,I totally forgot about CF game in 2021 which was knock out aswell......who won that??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

So you've hung your hat on the fact

Mayo have Played 5 won 3 Lost 2

Galway have Played 5 won 0 Lost 5

In Croke Park. But you forgot about the Connacht Final in Croke Park in 2021........ which is included in Mayos 3 and Galways 5.........

So you've no idea of the context of the stats your spouting.....

    And I'm embarrassing myself.

Morto for your ma lad. Morto.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,903 ✭✭✭HBC08

Mayo have Played 5 won 3 Lost 2

Galway have Played 5 won 0 Lost 5

In Croke Park is where the big boy football happens, puke football or a shawl much harder to deploy there.

Yep that's a good stat isn't it? And really the only recent form worth talking about.A lot of galway posters ignored it as there's no answer to it,its an indisputable fact they've no answer.A lot started talking about past glories that involved Mayo and Galway players from generations ago who wont be playing and then bizarrely enough one started sh1tting on about tiddlywinks and princesses .I found it amusing.

Didn't understand the rest of your post though sorry.

Like I said, you're coming across a bit overly emotional and wound up,a bit hyped up.Thats OK too but I find it funny, that's all.

Good lord you're embarrassing yourself. You can't talk about the recent past (last 2 seasons), and you can't talk about the long term past (1884-2012) without cradling in the fetal position, so you cherrypick the one decade in time (2012-2021) mayo had a better team than Galway and some nonsense other stats and repeat ad nauseam.

Galway are the third most successful football county on 9 All Irelands. Will that trend continue? Probably not, the counties pivoted fairly clearly to hurling but there is a good football crop at the moment so we'll see.

Mayo are about 25th on the roll of honour with 3 All Irelands, less than Louth or Tipp or Wexford. Perhaps they can go out this year and finally catch Wexford on 4, especially with no Soccer/Rugby/Hurling to compete in any meaningful way in the county. Until that (and a few more All Irelands thereafter) happens, Mayo fans would do well not to start unprompted attacks on more successful counties

After the last few days of this shte I hope both Mayo and Galway get knocked out in the group stage.
