Insuring Irish car with UK license

Friends of mine fly between the UK & here as they have elderly family in both countries. They both have UK licenses, as they aren't resident in Ireland, but need insurance for an Irish car to use here. Can it be done ?

There must be many thousands of us in the same situation - people who have left ireland a while ago but now want to be able to spend extended time at home and if needed, own a car in Ireland and have insurance in ireland without giving up a UK driving license with all of the repercussions that might have.

Have they asked any insurance companies for a quote?

They ask about your licence, I presume it's just one of the factors that's fed into the algorithm that spits out the quote. I can't imagine it's a barrier to actually getting insurance.

They tried them & they couldn't offer insurance as they weren't moving to Ireland for a job. It's crazy that you need a PPS card to exchange a license.

A specialist broker has said that, if you are from the UK, you have to be a permanent Irish resident, with an Irish license to be insured for an Irish registered car.
