I like callinan but it’s throwing him in at the deep end on David Clifford. Have to leave O’Brien on him imo. See what he’s made of. I’d be happy enough with coyne and callinan/hession on paudie and Brosnan Only way to curb dc influence is to stop fast ball in to him and not leave his man isolated

the team fairly picks itself at this stage I think Carr starting and Conroy coming from bench will be better for us than vice versa

"Against the likes of Kerry he'll have to mark someone"

    Ehhh?

The whole role Conor's playing as sweeper (except the league final with Diarmuid sweeping and the odd 10-20 minutes here and there in the league) is the spare man. His role is to not be marking someone and ensure we have numerical superiority in the most dangerous position at any given time. The job of the rest of the team is to ensure the spare man left over is kept somewhere they can't hurt us, either behind the ball in 95% of the play or when an overload is attempted on one side everyone shuffles over to keep the spare man on the other side away from the ball. He won't be marking anyone if he's playing that role be it against Kerry, Dublin, Galway (where he was used differently to mark Heaney in the final) or anyone else.

Plenty of reasons I don't think he's working especially well in the sweeper role but important to recognise what the job is before suggesting someone isn't doing it well enough or calling for someone else that would do it better.

I wouldn't have said that Loftus was playing a sweeper role based on the league and championship games this year.

I know that when a defence is set in the modern defensive system, its can be more about minding space than players and Loftus would have been minding his space... But to me a sweeper plays a completely free role closer to the full back line.

By definition, to me anyway, a sweeper wouldn't be one to be bringing the ball forward as much as Loftus did all through the league. A sweeper sweeps, and very rarely wanders out of position even when in possession.

Diarmuid played much more of a sweeper type role at times during the league than Loftus imo. But again, I wouldn't exactly call what Diarmuid was doing as playing as a sweeper. He seems to be popping up everywhere, more of a roaming role, but often appearing in that sweeper role when he sensed danger, which he's excellent at doing.

I'm not a huge fan of the term, but I have heard Loftus' role referred to as the quarter back role...

Conor spent the vast majority of the league the free man sweeping in our set defence. Every other player playing either a man marking role (quite rare, normally 2 per game sometimes 3) or a zonal defensive role tagging and switching between runners, which Diarmuid did exceptionally.

Diarmuid often ended up positioned further back than Conor tracking a man there but was seldom free or sweeping when it happened. He did sweep for 10 or 15 minute spells in a couple of games and for a significant period in the final until Heaney picked up the injury but was the exception rather than the rule this year.

Diarmuid is positioned where he's making more judgement calls than most on where and when to float from one player to another as the point of danger changes (some great clips from Stephen O'Meara on The Square D this year highlighting Diarmuid's play). He's been one of the fastest to adapt to the new system and has put in some incredible performances on the back of it. Huge game IQ.

Wouldn't be the least bit surprised seeing him continue in the role going forward as he played for much of the final but not what he's been playing most of the year.

Very low key build up for this. They are really going to have to look at changing the structure a bit again

According to Leo keegan mayo have a lot of injuries…….roughly translated mayo wont be showing their hand on Saturday.

    meaningless game really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,847 ✭✭✭Sebastian Dangerfield

Yeah, by trying to ensure there are no dead rubbers, they have taken the bite out of all 3 games.

Louths annihilation by Dublin will have done nothing to make Mayo take Saturday any more seriously, but I still expect us to struggle with them far more than the Dubs did

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,854 ✭✭✭Always_Running

Only someone actually injured won't be playing and Mayo will start their strongest available team against Kerry.

Not meaningless. Finishing top of the group will have the advantage of avoiding the play off round and a week rest against your Quarter final opponent and the winner on Saturday should top the group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,478 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

It is far from meaningless. If Mayo topped the group, they have a great chance to get to semi final stage. And anything can happen then. If they came third, I wouldn't be so confident of an away match in Louth or Cork . And then they have the issue of several matches one week after the other. And we have seen in previous years how injuries and fatigue take their toll.

I can't wait for it, think it will be a great game, I'd be happy enough if we are competitive and have a chance of winning with 10 minutes left. It'll show we could beat them in Croke park.

Really inexperienced full back line. Fully expect at least one of o Hora or Hession to start

Looks like Mcstay has decided to move forward with other goal keeping options as well ……

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,124 ✭✭✭crusd

I think those 3 have been our best performers in those positions YTD. That could be our FB line for years to come. Hession I feel would be better utilised further up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,478 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

My thoughts too. They are not yet the prominent names mentioned like Durkan, Ruane, O'Donoghue etc. further up the pitch, but the 3 on the full-back line put in some ferocious tackling in the league games - against the likes of Kerry, Tyrone, Galway. McBrien was a big loss in the latter league games when he was injured and then just coming back from injury. Hopefully he will have regained his full fitness. He's going to have a tough ask tomorrow against Clifford (assuming he will be marking him). I cannot see anyone else to put on him. Need someone with a bit of speed and height.

I'd say Clifford and Jason Foley must have some great battles in training. Foley is the only full-back that I could imagine keeping tabs on him.

Can't wait for match tomorrow. I'll need to splash out on that 3 match deal on GAAGo to get it. Presume it's not being shown on any Facebook page or anything similar? And then subscribe to Dazn tomorrow night for the Katie Taylor fight.

Why can't things be simple - when we just had RTE1 and RTE2, no choice on what to watch, no pay per view, and the highlight of the week was Where in the World followed by Glenroe.

Anyone thinking this game is meaningless is codding themselves - a defeat like we had in 2019 will be a massive set back . If we are All Ireland contenders, we should see a performance in this game

What’s this 3 match deal thing on GAAGO?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,980 ✭✭✭Coillte_Bhoy

We will not be playing Louth or Cork if we finish second or third, why do people keep saying this? We would be playing a second or third placed team form another group like happens in any other sport

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 862 ✭✭✭RedDevil55

You can buy a 3 match pass for €24. While buying matches one at a time is €12.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,478 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

Thanks Coillte Bhoy. I had just heard all along that second plays third. I hadn't considered that it was second in one group plays third in another group.

But that definitely does make sense alright. That makes it worse so. If Mayo finished third, then for the play-off, there is a good chance they could be playing one of the following away - Armagh, Tyrone, Roscommon, Kildare, Monaghan, Donegal. Wouldn't like to be meeting any of the nordies teams in a do-or-die game in their home territory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Mayo published team is the same starting 15 from the league final win against Galway so settled McStay line up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭TsuDhoNimh

Notable both Brickenden and Hession had played every minute of every league game available up until picking up their injuries.

Be interesting to see how it evolves during the year. Brickenden, O'Hora, Harrison, McLoughlin, Plunkett, Hession & Doherty all biting at the heels can only be a good thing.

Brickenden's injury is long term, so I've heard. So unfortunately I don't think we'll be seeing him again for some time.

they could be playing one of the following away - Armagh, Tyrone, Roscommon, Kildare, Monaghan, Donegal

    An come on.

In the last decade Mayo have had plenty of knockout games against the above opposition and with the exception of Kildare in 2018 won everyone of them, home, away or neutral.

You may as well pack it in now if you think we could not beat them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Can't be comparing what happened 2013 to 2017 to the current team it's a much changed team now and I have no doubt that both Kerry and Mayo if they can help it will be looking to avoid a play off match a week before All Ireland Quarter final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,351 ✭✭✭HBC08

    Agreed,

Mayo could lose to any of those teams but really if we are at the top table (and I believe we are) we should be beating teams like the above when the chips are down......and we do.

The thing that'll catch us is injuries and fatigue from playing too many games so that plus a possibly more favourable draw means it would be good to top the group.

I wouldn't be surprised though if we lose in Killarney and still go deep in the championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭TsuDhoNimh

Wouldn't imagine McStay mislead in the update he gave. He'd lose way more than he'd gain on that.

Surgery successful and well ahead of progress on the rehab. Wouldn't be available for the Kerry game but should be back in contention by the end of the month.

Big step from eligible for contention to making the 26 when we've got the 14 (managed to leave out Donnacha McHugh from the 13 mentioned previously) lads all fighting for defensive spots but great to have more options there. Especially when they offer a bit more height and physicality like Rory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,980 ✭✭✭Coillte_Bhoy

Exactly which is why its important to finish as high up in the group as you can. I dont understand people saying tomorrow's game isnt really important, it's crucial imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Mayo U17s won the Connacht semi final against Roscommon tonight in MacHale Park 2-13 2-12 with the winner coming with the last attack of the match in the 3rd minute of added time. Play Galway in the final Final next Friday in Tuam and both finalists are into the All Ireland Quarter final.

You can, but then after you get an email saying that by using the discount, it cant be watched on an app and can only be watched on gaago.ie through a browser.

Literally the most useless service Ive ever seen or heard of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 862 ✭✭✭RedDevil55

Even in the last 4 years we've beaten pretty much all the major contenders, bar Tyrone and Kerry, in championship.

Is that on top of the thing where you can (natively - plenty of ways to work around it) cast to your TV from the app but not from the browser they do with the season pass?

Jeeze... they don't make it half as attractive as it should be.
