That's wonderfully enhanced for the Super Gameboy as well,

So much effort put into that title

They did a stellar job on Space Invaders as well,

Haven't played that Donkey Kong at all, so the first four levels are like the original arcade game and then it turns on it's head into a totally different type of game? That's some really impressive meta shite for a GB title, will have to pick up a copy!

Oh you need to pick it up. It's absolutely incredible.

Jeremy Parish covered that GB game. Apparently on Super Gameboy it doesn't load up the gameboy game but has a SNES rom on the cart that loads up.

    Yep, I know.

I wonder if the great bunch of lads on Aliexpress have a standalone Snes cart with that...

Or maybe even, if one could get the right file, get it burnt to a custom Snes cart...

    Hmm....

I've got the two of them, the local version and the SGB2, I didn't know there was a whole lot of difference bar the link cable port

And if you mention these in the Nintendo forum they just blink slowly, wipe their nose in their sleeve and go back to playing Zelda on their Switch Lite

The difference is in the speed the games run at. The normal super gameboy runs games slightly faster (2.4%) as there was an issue with the snes CPU. The super gameboy 2 fixes that issue and runs games at the correct speed.

Well then, going forward the official narrative is that I bought it for that reason, not because I thought it looked cool

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,372 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I only know because of Jeremy Parish again. He was making his gameboy works videos people noticed it was too fast and told him about the super gameboy 2. As the biggest hater of 16.7% slow down in games, I'm not sure I'd have noticed a 2.4% increase in game speed!

It's usually the pitch of the music you'll notice if it's a game you play a LOT.

Still playing arcade games almost every single day now since getting a MiSTercade. I don't think I've ever used my machines so much.

Played through Undercover Cops yesterday evening. Never actually credit fed it through to the very end before. Such a gorgeous game with all those IREM details but I do wish the controls were a bit tighter.

I generally find side scrolling beat em ups live or die based on how good the grab mechanics are. Nothing worse than a game where you just press right and punch your way through. Add in a good grab with some combo type moves and it's endlessly more fun.

Did notice once I was finished though that it's the 'World' version in MiSTer and not the Jap or Alpha Renewal versions. There are actually some moves missing from the World version, maybe Alpha Renewal is a bit punchier.

Only played Crash Bandicoot series for the first time last year and even I can tell there's something funky with the physics in the remakes. Crash seems to maintain no momentum somehow. Can only imagine how fun this gets if Vicarious Visions were faithful to the tediously long levels of the original.

I recommended the Spyro HD Reimagined release on the Switch to my missus recently as she grew up playing Croc and I thought it might fulfil that 'small cute animal in a 3D platformer' type vibe.

Similarly, the controls are absolutely atrocious.

I haven't played the Playstation originals in a very, very long so don't know if they were trying to mimic the original controls or if the new physics are just off, but it's just not enjoyable to play in the slightest. Was given up on very quickly.

The issue with the likes of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot was (sorry rose tinted glasses wearers) they were never any good to begin with but they were games in areas where the PS1 was lacking so people made do. Well, the PS1 did have amazing games in these genres, I'd take Klonoa and Tomba over Crash and Ape Escape is a fantastic 3D platformer compared to Spyro, but these were the popular ones. Crash isn't very good but at least the collision boxes being squared off meant it was precise and only let down by dodgy level and game design. The remake's pillbox hit box means you slide off everything. It's still a decent remake but the collision needs to be sorted.

Spyro games despite being poor man's attempts at N64 platformers aren't as bad and the remakes are better, they've kind of aged poorly with far too much talking and other niggles that just doesn't hold up against much better designed games. I've tried to go back to Spyro myself but the opening hour or so is soooooo boring that I give up well before the game begins proper.

Lesson of the story, tell your missus to stop messing around with mediocre PS1 games, she should sink her teeth into Dark Souls.

Spyro and Crash were always the also rans to Mario 64, they looked pretty good but were very linear and narrow otherwise.

I played them on release and certainly it felt like Sony were playing a catch-up game, much like they later did with the terrible first Killzone game as it tried to compete with Halo.

I thought Crash Bandicoot looked absolutely incredible when it first came out. Fairly sure it was the first PS1 game I ever actually played. Real 'future is now' type of stuff. Felt like I was playing a cartoon, which was what Naughty Dog intended I suppose!

It's fairly linear looking back alright and fairly bland gameplay wise but it still looks great imo.

I really enjoyed the Spyro remaster trilogy, only a few trophies away from having platinum in all 3 of them on PS4, but there's definitely a few times where the jank gameplay makes me want to rip the controller part.

The Crash trilogy on the other hand can go to hell...

Yep it's a gorgeous looking game and a real tech showpiece. It's very interesting how naughty dog pulled it off. However I still remember thinking it felt old next to Mario 64 and also felt a bit crap compared to the likes of mario and sonic.

Played a bit of Pilotwings and some Konami SNES shooters when I managed to rip myself away from TotK. Really liking Pilotwings but the difficulty shoots up when the hang glider gets introduced.

I still have the code from level 6 I think saved written on a pad from the mid 90s. Not sure anyone every finished that game.

    And yeah, I hate thermals!

Pulled myself away from Zelda to get back to more Metroid Prime 2 this evening. I still really love it. Sky Sanctuary's just a great area.

Mooched around for long enough for the game to say "go here", even though that's where I was going. I think it I wasn't playing this in bursts, I'd turn off the hint system but here we are...

During the day, I'm working from my garden room a lot so I have NES Tetris on the TV and Pang or Bubble Bobble on the Aero City for short, sharp bursts.

Dragged myself away from Zelda as well.

Played a bit of pilotwings. Got to the silver license which was cut short when the fire alarm in the house went off because my dinner was burning in the air fryer because of the stupid recipe I followed (tasted great but so much smoke!)

Then played a battle in tactics ogre to get back into it.

Played a lot of knightmare on msx. It's such a good game despite how simple it is. I made a list of all the exits I'd unlocked and managed to make it to stage 6.

Then I tried to get the scc sound in the msx emulator working again. This time I managed it.

Basically you have to add the scc rom manually and then change the config file to point the emulator to the cartridge to have it boot in that slot

The big issue is that the one person online that keeps telling people how to fix this issue keeps posting their config file which has errors in it, it's not pointing to the right address for the cartridge. Finally found a comment with the correct address and it's working now.

Unfortunately this has mess up my save state for knightmare so I've to start again. Thankfully I've improved quite a bit so I made it to stage 4 first try. Still stage 4 and 5 will be tough to clear but it's nice having the improved music.

Playing Pac-Man CE demake on the Famicom a lot as it’s a 5 min score attack game so good for the old WFH scenario.

Honestly I prefer this version to the awesome original.

Also Metroid Prime 2. Came across a cool boss called Quadraxis last night. Couldn’t figure him out though and there are no light beacons in his arena. Next time.

    Maybe back to Zelda too.

Quadraxis is a pretty big difficulty spikes in the game. I loved the boss fight but many find it too tough. Good luck.
