Car going in reverse when in neutral?!

I bought a PD100 B5 and on the way home from buying it the gearbox went bang and now when I leave the clutch out in neutral in goes backwards. I have the gearbox half out of the car, anyone know of anyone this has happened to or anything? Any information at all is welcome, thanks.

I’m afraid I’m not much help. But at that vintage I’m sure you will be looking for a replacement gearbox. Another thing to check is engine and gearbox mounts. If they are worn excessively they can damage gearbox
