I'd be shocked if he did the TDF. I'd say worlds and Vuelta defence and gear up for the Tour in 2024.

My 2c: he has to do the tour. This season has been a disaster for the team.

The Soudal team for the Tour as listed by PCS and others is Alaphilipe, Jakobsen, Morkov, Senechal, Cavagna, Lampaert, Baglioli, Vansevenent

But we know that Lefevre can change tack pretty quickly

Yeah that’s pure sprint stage team and hoping Alaphilipe gets a stage somewhere

I don’t think him doing the tour necessarily fixes the awful season for the team, he realistically isn’t going to be a top contender with a lack of preparation for himself and the team around him. They’re not going to beat UAE and Jumbo, and they’d probably struggle against Ineos with Bernal unless Remco’s back in super form.

If anything sending him to the tour and taking away the sprint team to give him domestiques could make it an even worse season for them if they end up with 0 stage wins, which is a strong possibility.

They’ll just target the Vuelta again

That would be phenomenal... especially if Bernal was anywhere close to his best (which, unfortunately, is probably unlikely)

1985 was pretty hot too I think... Hinault, Lemond, Roche and Delgado.... not to mention Kelly, who came 4th that year too.

That would all assume that in 7 weeks, Remco has a complete recovery from Covid with no residual effects and can re-set his fitness peak from May to July. Given he spent the guts of 6 weeks off-grid preparing for the Giro before turning up for LBL and then a ~ 2 week taper into the Giro itself, its difficult to see how he can repeat that type of preparation.

    I don't see Bernal being a factor.

Even before the crash his TdF win is looking more like a Cadel Evans style win between big eras.

He had easily the strongest team but struggled to shake Ala and was lucky that a stage was cut short and Pinot's back blew out.

I just don't think he is Pog level.

that is tough luck on remco...just when it was to starting to get interesting

I take it back. That was an unbelievable GC lineup

Bernal is phenomenal when healthy. He was nowhere close to his potential peak when he won the tour IMO. He’s the only Ineos rider I want to see do well.

I agree with you on that last bit at least.

I was living in the Colombian part of London that year. Was great watching the celebrating.

What's the Colombian part of London? Is everyone very alert there?

Elephant & Castle and it certainly does have a lot of good cheap coffee (don't know about anything else)

    Stage 10....

    Screenshot-2023-05-01-at-15.14.18.png

It could be a sprint finish or a breakaway day. Weather doesn't look great so I'm thinking if there's an early breakaway that it makes it.

Magnus Cort looks like he is rounding into form and this looks like a good stage for him. De Marchi will like his chances as well.

I'm picking Magnus for the win, if it's a bunch sprint it'll be Pederson.

it'll be a bunch sprint. Jonathan Milan to head-bob across the line first.

Weather forecast is absolutely atrocious, looks like it’s going to lash all day

We could see change of tactics now with more teams willing to gamble on breaks.

Bora are usually very active but they’ve done nothing so far. Is it worth riding to get Vlasov & Kemna in top 10 instead of trying for stages? Soudal have been freed of Remco. Movistar have done nothing. DSM have been great but without Maglia Rosa will hopefully go back stage hunting

Only Jayco have tried for breakaways, looked after Matthews and made sure Dunbar has been OK in the hills.

Given that it's a) the Giro and b) raining, Geraint is going to fall off again, isn't he?

Saw the start a little while ago. Hatch speaking about “talk” of no racing for first 100km or so only for the flag to drop and dozens try to get in the break. Ha

No need to go up that mountain when it's probably gonna all come back together anyway.

Jens is agressively enthusiastic on that motorbike. Polar opposite of when Wiggo had that gig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭De Bhál

way better, and actually has some worthwhile info, as opposed to Wiggins which was overall just a waste of petrol.

Apparently half the peloton are sick, vlasov out the back already.

Why is it that the WHO declared the covid emergency over before the start of the GIRO and they are still testing cyclists??????

If you can win a TT with covid then lets be fair, its not something that professional cyclists need to be tested for
