Derelict apartments central Sligo

Are there any plans to do anything with the apartments by the glasshouse hotel in Sligo.

It is quite amazing during a housing crisis that all the units just sit there while developers say the cost of the building makes new works unviable.

There is another development in Ballisodore that seems to have not progressed in 15 years.

Does the council not have the power to force the owner's hand on this now.

I thought new powers allowed them to do this - Dublin seems to have forced the hand of the developers sitting on them now with many finally getting finished.

It does stand out in the town and it should be a priority for the council. No point in doing new works all around it while leaving that sit there ruining it all.

Is there demand in Sligo for apartments? It comes down to figures.. how much would a studio , 1 bed , 2 bed 3 bed apartment rent for in that location. If its very low then the developer might want to just sit it out.

a 2bed in Citygate will get 850-900 these days no problem

The Glasshouse bought those derelict apartments beside them and had plans to extend the hotel into them, including joining the buildings together. Then covid hit.

Was just speaking to a young woman I know this evening, she is thinking of leaving Sligo altogether as she hates the apartment she is living in but anything that comes to the market for rent is snapped up, very hard to come by. So it seems that there is a demand there, at least anecdotally.

Right now, the state will take apartments anywhere.

But there's a decent amount of jobs in Sligo, plus student demand.

The rental market in Sligo seems to have ceased to function, same old placeholders on Daft any time I look.

There's nowhere for people to rent long term but yet the council are still approving every planning application coming in seeking a change of use for short term letting. The mind boggles.

Yes.

For example there are like 5 houses in the town now owned by a single American up on Airbnb. One of those houses he bought, evicted the people renting it long term and now has planning permission to rent it short term on Airbnb.

And to top it off it's an ex-corporation house in an estate built for families. Really is a great use of our limited housing stock.

People will sell or leave empty rather than let long term, there is too much uncertainty in that sector and it is hard to see what might restore investor confidence, the current predicament of Ires REIT is a case in point, trading at 40% of it's capital value, nobody will touch residential property even at a discount like that.
