Connacht final is dead duck this year. Pathetic crowd in Castlebar for it, about 12000. No discussion about it on here either, seems to be no interest in it. Galway can't win, expected to beat Sligo who are pretty poor.

This game should have been held in Sligo for a start.

Under the normal home/away agreements in Connacht, it's Sligos turn to host Galway. The days of 30+k at Connacht finals are long gone, and this 12k shoehorned into Markevitz park (14k capacity iirc) would have added to the occasion, and been a huge promotion opportunity for GAA in Sligo town where it struggles (a big soccer town traditionally).

I'm relation to the mention of jersey colors earlier, this game should be played in the traditional county colors IMHO, i.e. Sligo in white and Galway in maroon. Sligo decided halfway through the 2002 season they were going to play in black and not their traditional white, and now Galway are playing in white for some reason (their current maroon is quite dark in fairness).

There are few winners apart from O"Niells in all this nonsense. Louth dressing up as Down feeds I to the same mentality.... should every county change colour to whatever the fashion is, or whatever looks good with a pair of jeans?

Turned it off after 20 minutes. The Ulster championship is the only competitive one. Will probably be the AI semi finals before we see a decent, competitive game outside of that.

Galway 2-7 scored from 10 attempts. Sligo 0-5 from also 10 attempts. Sligo management won't be happy with how easy they let Galway in for those goals.

Shane Walsh off, hopefully not an injury that will keep him out

A conundrum for the GAA to solve is a clear prize for provincial winners. An extra home game in the group stage perhaps?

Woeful game. Galway going through the motions and can barely be arsed. Switching over to the racing.

Seeding provincial draws based on league placing is the solution. Mayo, Galway and Roscommon were the top 3 in Division 1. On league ranking, two of those would have made the final in a fair and balanced draw.

He was taken off because he was very poor. Tierney one of the few forwards that played well today yet they still scored 2-20 and won by 14 points.

Provincials, apart from Ulster, are non-competitive with small crowds. Largely empty stadiums in Castlebar and Limerick today for provincial finals.

The complication in Connacht is that there is a rolling schedule meaning each team has to travel to London and New York on a equal basis. It was interrupted by Covid, but is now set again up until 2027. This allows one of the "weak" teams, usually Sligo to get to the final every now and again.

It doesn't matter how the draw is organised, Kerry will win Munster, Dublin will win Leinster, and one of the "Big 3" will win Connacht. For the time being, until the balance of power has one of its occasional shifts. Cavan used to be the only team in Ulster for decades. It would be wrong to fix the system to deny the chance of a "weak" team ever getting to a final.

Yes and no - Connacht is competitive amongst the top 3 teams, but the draw this year ensured a D1 v D4 match up in the final.

BTW, is there anything that illustrates how poorly ran RTE is when they bring Lee Keegan from Westport to Limerick to analyze a game being played in Castlebar that he's watching on TV like the rest of us 😂. Fuckin hilarious.

Small crowds in Limerick, doesn't look great at all.

Was half tempted to go to the Munster final as it's on my doorstep...but then I checked the prices 😱😱😱

€35 for a ticket in one of the worst stands in Ireland to see a (likely) one sided game?? No thanks

Would not be in favour of too much gimmickry.

The Connacht final this year was a dead duck as a result of the draw.

And it's rare, it's was 2015 the last time we had a Connacht final that only had one of Mayo, Galway, Roscommon.

This new system makes the provincial the least relevant they have ever been and it will take teams time to figure how valuable it is in their preparation for bigger things.

But I do think people are struggling to get to terms with the scheduling.

For decades we have had a provincial season between May and July and a All Ireland season between August and September.

Having the provincial finals over by mid May is hard to get used to, and that doesn't help the provincial championships.

Awful atmosphere in Limerick. You can clearly hear the players and coaches shouting and giving instructions.

Its poor stuff so far. Kerry very sloppy but no punishment for it.

And as I speak, a goal. Game over if it ever begun

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Goal for Kerry on 15 mins 1-4 to 0-1. Going to be a long game for Clare going by this start.

It will hardly be any better next Saturday when Limerick play Longford there in the Tailteann. I like to hear the shouting and giving instructions.

Both provincial finals done and dusted after 20 mins.

    Change is needed urgently.

    Lovely 2nd goal there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 859 ✭✭✭French Toast

Kerry could score a goal with every attack if they wanted to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,000 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

The other Munster teams don't fare any better. 2022 Kerry 1-28 Limerick 0-08. 2021 Kerry 4-22 Cork 1-09.

But change is here in the form of the group stages.

The provincials are as irrelevant as they have ever been.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭robbiezero

Some of the kick passing here from Kerry is class.

Clare are dreadful though. Look a Div 4 team rather than Div 2

Looking forward to a good tv programme tonight on RTE 2 at 21.30 called 'The Day The Provincial's Died'.

Stark difference between division 1 and 2 standards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Clare not helping themselves set up so naively, a surprise with such experienced manager in Colm Collins.  Kerry 10 in front it could be double that full time if this game carries on in the same manner.

Clare not laying a finger on Kerry players, giving them so much space.
