    haaland with his customary goal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,882 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

He hasn’t improved Man City as a team according to some on here and elsewhere. LOL

1 thing i find interesting is (maybe its not at all), including tonight, he now has 35 PL goals but only got the 1st goal in 9 games.

kane on the other hand has 25 PL goals, with 17 of them being the 1st goal.

out of the 33 games played i thought he would have been 1st scorer like 20 times, it being the most important goal and all.

i suppose it dont matter cos they'll win the league

After 33 games last season they were on 80 points with GD of +59.

After 33 games this season they are on 79 points with GD of +56.

Do you consider less points and a worse goal difference as being an improvement?

Another win for Liverpool, finding a nice bit of form recently. Made hard enough work of it, but a win is a win.

City ended up being comfortable enough against a much depleted West Ham team.

Mad all the unqualified gushing praise City get considering there are so many charges against them still to be dealt with.

Class team obviously but how can this stuff just be simply ignored as if it isn't the fundamental reason why they are as good as they are!?

Last word I'd use to describe this team is class, but that's just me.

They are obviously top class on the pitch come on like 😂

They're improving as the season goes on, as Haaland has adapted to the team and vice versa. Lets see how they go in the CL

Teams often start to eek out results when they have nothing to play for, no pressure on them like.

I know rub if the green comes into it, and things like what happened with Spurs (most spurs things ever) but genuinely when the pressure is off its just easier for most teams.

These things are always such fine margins.

If he's gets them over the line for at least at PL & CL double then it will be that he was the missing piece. The final part of the puzzle.

If they fail it will be because he made them change their system to accommodate him. And he isn't a Pep style player.

    🤷‍♂️

It’s not solely down to him though. Maybe without him they’d be 10 points and 20 goals worse off?

The team certainly aren’t keeping clean sheets at the same clip as before this season which would be negatively affecting both counts and they are (essentially) outside his control.

The argument is that they concede more goals because they have one fewer controlling player in the middle because of having him up top.

It's one that could be argued all day really. I think there are games he causes them some problems, but there are also plenty where he forces breakthroughs that might otherwise have proven difficult. In the league - where they've been utterly dominant anyway - I don't necessarily think he's going to make them more successful than they already were. But I think he's the reason they've got their best ever shout at a Champions League. And that's the whole ball game for them really.

100%. I said in here a few weeks ago that if they win the CL with him being a difference maker then absolutely, the argument is there to be made that he has made them better but as it stands today, they are worse off points wise than last year. That cannot be argued with and by any metric, less points with the same number of games played is not an improvement.

I've seen it mentioned a few times but I don't get how Pts Total = Quality.

Like it obviously does for each season but using it between seasons as a metric is daft.

    A million times this

It is the same as saying Barca have got 3 more points in La Liga than City have in the PL therefore Barca must be a better team. It is far too simplistic a measure.

City are on course for a treble - fighting in all competitions at the end. If City win the PL & CL alone without the FA cup it will be their best ever season. Add in an FA cup and it equals the biggest achievement in English football.

A lot more impressive than 100 points

Especially when the differences been compared are so miniscule, it's a completely useless stats! if you were to follow what has been said here, if City win all 5 remaining games they will win the league and finish on 97 points, 2 points better of than last year so Haaland has improved them. If they lose 1 and win the rest, they will win the league on 94, 1 point worse off than last so therefore Haaland has made them worse! Illogical...

Speaking of comparisons of points, which I'm not allowed do, but anyway :)

    1998 CHA      Arsenal          38       23       9         6         68       33           +35     78       won by 1

    2023               Arsenal          34       24       6         4         81       39           +42     78

The "bottlers" of Arsenal have actually managed to get as many points as made them champions back in 1998, and they have 4 games left!

    Like Chelsea?

Fulham and Spurs had nothing to play for either. Liverpool are under plenty of pressure to make Europa L as it could be their best bet to qualify for CL next season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,487 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

Chelsea is a it of an anomaly right?

Fulham had nothing to play for yeah, Spurs the same as pool really I suppose but yes and doesn't this prove the point?

Liverpool's extra bit of quality/luck on the night got them the wins, I would say the pressure being off these guys, the likes of Nunez etc has surely played a part in that.

I don't think it would be fair to put it all down to generous decisions or shocking Spursy moments from players (Moura)

This sort of stuff proves the point, because that 1998 Arsenal team was a level above the current team.

Looking at point totals proves nothing IF the comparisons are not apples vs apples. Same league, same season etc... Otherwise, it isn't really relevant as they did not face the same opponents. I go back to my earlier point - you wouldn't say Barca are a better team than Man City yet Barca have more league points than City this season.

It was never really a thing I noticed until Liverpool lost a few titles getting 90+ points and now it seems to be an obsession for some.

Sky have a Brighton player wearing a body camera for the pre-match walkout and handshakes... Bizarre 🤨

POW! Right in the kisser for DDG. Almost the perfect assist from Lindelof for a Brighton goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭doc_17

Darwin hasn’t really been a factor in the recent upturn in form. In fact, it’s coincided with Klopp settling on a front 3 of Salah, Gakpo and Jota.

Liverpool are a top team, their recent run of form is as related to that as anything.

What a pathetic dive from Rashford.
