    Hi all,

Baby on the way so looking to buy a car to replace my 07 1.6 Diesel Peugeot 407.

I have my Peugeot 8 years and it's a belter - things like fuel economy, reliability and comfort are what I'll be looking for in my next.

I travel 50km a week for work, with trips up the country bringing the total to driving to ~250km a month. I live in Dublin.

I've looked at Sportage, Tuscon and Quashai but not sure. Think I've overdone the research.

I like the look of the Skoda range, SUV's are a bit out of my price range, Octavia's also appeal.

My partner has said "just make sure the buggy will fit in the boot" 😉.

    Thanks guys, G

    Get an estate

The two of us have to drive it and my other half isn't keen on an estate.

Had a look at Prius's last night on the two well known sites and while within price range. A lot have 120k+ travelled.

In todays cars is distance travelled a big thing aside from checks on timing belts and dfp on diesel cars I read on another thread?

I'd stay well away from diesel if you're doing less than 3000kms a year anyway. More modern diesels need to be driven plenty otherwise you run the risks of expensive maintenance.

Being honest, get yourself a Dacia Duster. They're cheap to run and have plenty of space. Similar to the Pug you had before

You shouldn't even be considering a diesel if your only doing 250km per month. At that small amount of driving, fuel costs shouldn't be the deciding factor really. And 120k km is nothing to something like a Prius. There are many of them driving around as taxis that would do that mileage in 12 months or less.

Octavia hatchback is certainly worth a look at too, ideal family car with a pretty big boot. Low mileage tidy looking petrol example that's a little outside your budget:

In a Prius, the car, interior, body etc has done the mileage but the engine may have only done 2 thirds of that because so much time is spent on battery.

Great space in them and no timing belts etc to worry about.

Well worth a test drive in one IMO.

    Update....

I decided on an 19 Octavia 1lt, spent the last few weekends going around garages, and this one caught my eye. Low-ish KM's, full service history etc

I have one question. I'm paying in cash; it's a Skoda dealership.

They said they would do a deal - How much reduction should I expect?

Difficult question to answer without knowing details of the car and the asking price.

I need to change and Octavia petrol is one I am considering. Is there much power in the 1.0 engine? What would it be like for overtaking?

    Good luck with it.

Hi John, I bought the car.

I took it for a spin yesterday with the gf on the M50; plenty in the 115 hp to reach decent speed to overtake.

I ended up getting an extra 4% off the sale price. I have seen similar specs online for €2-3k more on carzone. New models and the push towards electric could mean it's not a bad time to pick up an older model. There were so many enyaq's on the forecourt.

My purchase is a Soleil with 20,000 km, so happy with that and the full-service history. The boot and back seat look like they haven't been used. Garage also threw in an alloys upgrade and Skoda garages give you a 2yr warranty.
