Louth to beat Dublin to make Group A the Group Of Death. 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,946 ✭✭✭Coillte_Bhoy

The players are not professionals tied to a defined season so i can see why GAA want to avoid dead rubbers at all costs. Why would an amateur player be arsed playing for his team in a meaningless final group match when they are already out and where they are likely to be hammered? they are not under contract.

It also gives a reason to top your group. Looking at the groups no team will throw a provincial final

Topping your group gives you a two week break to your QF. You might be qualified by your final game but you will still want to top the group.

Group 1: Kerry, Louth, Mayo, Cork

    Kerry 4/4

    Mayo 2/4

    Louth 2/4

    Cork 0/4

R3: Cork still alive but will need to beat Mayo and depend on other result of Kerry v Louth.

Group 2: Galway, Armagh, Tyrone, Westmeath

    Galway 4/4

    Armagh 4/4

    Tyrone 0/4

    Westmeath 0/4

R3: Galway v Armagh for direct route to quarter-finals. Tyrone v Westmeath in qualifying playoff.

Group 3: Dublin, Sligo, Roscommon, Kildare

    Dublin 4/4

    Kildare 2/4

    Roscommon 2/4

    Sligo 0/4

R3: Dublin qualified. Sligo eliminated. Roscommon v Kildare for home advantage in preliminary quarter-final. Incentive enough?

Group 4: Derry, Clare, Monaghan, Donegal

    Derry 4/4

    Monaghan 2/4

    Donegal 2/4

    Clare 0/4

R3: Derry qualified. Clare eliminated. Monaghan v Donegal for home advantage in preliminary quarter-final. Incentive enough?

    Gp1

could see both Mayo and Cork get to the last game with two or more points each and they could be play to top group or home advantage in the QF. Cork will have Kerry at home( presuming they beat Clare)

    Gp2

Tyrone will have 1-2 points going into the final match. They will have home advantage against seed two which could be Derry( I think Armagh will beat Derry). More than likely there will be a draw somewhere in this group.

    Gp3

Kildare could beat or draw Dublin with home advantage ( admittedly a neutral venue). I also expect them to beat Sligo. Last game could see them looking to see them playing to secure top spot in the group.

    Gp4

Like Gp1 could turn out to be a tricky group. I expect Armagh to be in this group not Derry. Clare have Donegal at home in the first match. Will it be in Cusack park or Miltown Malbay.

Should there not be a rule where if a team already faced xyz team in the provincials - then that team is moved to an alternate group. If Dublin win Leinster (and because Dessie is managing that is now an IF) they will be facing Kildare again talk about a buzz kill. Where is the variety? They do draws to add variety in other codes.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I can’t wait for them. Don’t understand people wanting them to fail already . Hope the neutral games are in regional grounds rather than brought up to Croker Cork and mayo in Ennis/ Limerick etc The prelim quarter finals will be good too around the country

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭munster87

Don’t see that specific one as a buzzkill. Glen Ryan and Kildare would be well up for it, outside of Croke Park this time 😅

Finding out the neutral venue is one of the most exciting parts for me. Hoping Limerick vs Wicklow is on the trainline somewhere so I can hang around whatever town I probably will never visit otherwise.

I think for once they'll schedule Dublins 'neutral' game away from CP. It's likely to be against Sligo, already perceived as the biggest missmatch in the competition. That added to an expected low crowd and Sligo possibly being closed to knocked out already, I'd say when the fixtures are set they'll make sure to set that one in Tullamore or Cavan etc.

The neutral game that could potentially be on in Croker would be Galway v Armagh (a likely pairing at this point). Armagh nearly sold out Croker on their own for the same fixture last year and have the biggest support in Ireland at the moment. They're currently going bananas over the ticket situation to the Ulster final. Croker is actually close to the most neutral venue between the counties, the other option Beffini Park Cavan, which may not quite have the capacity and is also much more in Armaghs neck of the woods

Hopefully Galway vs Armagh/Derry is on in Castlebar. Galway love playing there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 587 ✭✭✭Avon8

Couldn't see it in either case. Would be like playing in Clones for them. Breffini if Derry and Croker if Armagh my best guess (although the examiner said the fixtures are made on Friday, prior to this weekend). If Croker they'll probably try to shoehorn a double header in there somewhere, possibly Kildare v Roscommon as illogical as that would be

I'd fully expect Clare to beat Donegal as Donegal are absolutely awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

There could but they've gone with keeping provincial finalists apart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

Mayo v Cork, Galway v Armagh/Derry, Roscommon v Kildare and Derry/Armagh v Clare are the group games from every group that could be staged in Croke Park. Players want to play in Croke Park. Let them play there!

    Kerry v Louth, Tullamore/Portlaoise

    Tyrone v Westmeath, Cavan/Clones

    Dublin v Sligo, Cavan/Clones

    Monaghan v Donegal, Cavan

    Cork football fans don't travel.

Mayo v Cork should be in Limerick or Ennis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,261 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Maybe, but ya want to play different teams. Sure I have heard plenty of players/fans from Ulster who used to be sick of getting another Ulster team in the previous qualifier system etc.

OK fair enough is a novelty playing away, but more of novelty playing a crowd from outside the province.

As for the match itself Dublin stand a great chance of losing. Dessie Farrell is blessed to be Dublin manager. He is only there because there are no other standout options.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Will Limerick, Ennis or Croke Park make much difference to the travelling Cork support?

It's understandable supporters give out about traveling to Croke Park but when players want to play there, that has to be factored in too.

Of course it does. West Cork is a real football region. It's a journey in itself just to get out of Cork - let alone All the way to Dublin once you do. Ennis or Limerick is of course a closer option and would make a difference.

By comparison to the hurlers, Cork fans don't travel, but they have every right not to have to go to Croke Park for such a game.

Not sure if this is the place to ask but how can I watch games abroad these days? I'll be in Spain for a few weeks and in the past just bought GAAGO passes.

However now that it seems to have become a subscription service for mostly people in Ireland it's not clear if it works from abroad.

Anyone have any idea in this?

If you think that Dublin stand a good chance of losing to Kildare then surely you should not be annoyed about rematches in the group stages, because if they stand a good chance of losing to Kildare they also stand a good chance of losing to Louth, and if they do that there will be no rematch with Kildare because they will be in group A with Kerry, Mayo and Cork.

    Thanks for reply.

I know it has in the past but I heard it might be different this year as their model changed.

Great chance should Dublin start with the same team as last Sunday but the likelihood of that happening?Costello,McCaffrey,Howard,Murchan,Fitzsimons and Rock all either brought on to win the match or didn't feature last Sunday. If all of those 5 start I can imagine Dublin would win comfortably in the round 2 group match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,099 ✭✭✭flasher0030

The names look good on paper, but mostly based on reputation. I would only put McCaffrey as being influential. Howard didn't play last Sunday, and it wasn't a case of saving him for tougher tests. Rock was hopeless when he came on. Fitzsimmons is 34, and on the brink of retirement. Costello blows hot and cold - hasn't been showing any blistering form in recent times. Don't know about Murchen - haven't heard anything about him recently. From looking at the Dublin Kildare match, Dublin currently look way of the caliber to win an All-Ireland. That could change of course, but it will take a mighty transformation. I think when Dessie is gone, and some of these players retire, we will hear about a lack of harmony in the camp. The players just don't look like they are enjoying themselves. Ciaran Kilkenny looked really frustrated on Sunday - gesturing wildly to his compatriots.

I've enjoyed the provincial championships so far. The finals might be a bit of a calm before the storm. A bit like the league finals. It will still be important to win them though. Being home to Seed 3 and away to Seed 4 is the best route to winning both rounds. That could more less guarantee safe passage to the quarter-finals.

It might be preferential for all provincial winners to avoid each other as long as possible. Winning their groups will be the best route.

Do only 2 teams quality for the QF from each group?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,841 ✭✭✭Always_Running

they are good players on grass also as remain among some of Dublin's best players. Howard,Murchan are big additions to any Dublin starting team and didn't feature at all on Sunday. Dean Rock,Cormac Costello between them scored 2-39 this year and both left off the starting team. Regardless of age Fitzsimons is still one of Dublin's best defenders.

When Jim Gavin was Dublin manager it didn't matter if they were playing Kerry or Mayo in All Ireland final or Carlow,Wicklow in round 1 of the Leinster championship he treated every team with respect. Dessie Farrell chose to play experimental line up against Kildare and could easily have lost that game, basically bailed out by subs who most will likely be starting in the upcoming Leinster final.

It's been mentioned a million times at this stage.

The group winners qualify for the QF proper.

Second place has home advantage against a third placed team from another group in the QF preliminary/playoff.

The winner of the QF preliminary/playoff goes to the QF proper
