City were seen as saving football when they won the league in the past few season why should it stop now?

Sometimes you see a comment that is so brazenly bullshit that you can't help but admire it.

Cheat code City saving football is like saying Trump was seen as saving democracy.

There were plenty of posts in here and other team threads about City saving football when they were beating Liverpool to the league so I'd imagine that's what the other poster is referring to.

Not really most people just think that when it comes to city vs Liverpool City are the lesser of 2 evils. Everyone on this board nay in life knows at least one absolutely insufferable Liverpool fan most won't know any city fans at all.

So having to listen to an annoying fan is worse than City actually cheating?

Some people need to grow up if this is actually something that influences people's decisions.

Seeing the Wrexham owners crying and celebrating the promotion to league 2 makes me sick thinking of the absolute horrible asshats who own most premier league clubs.

Delighted to see them going up. Ben Foster seems like a good lad, too. Saw an interview with him where he said that he agreed to play for them for peanuts as he loved their story (and had played for them earlier in his career), they're essentially only covering his expenses. The exposure Ryan Reynolds profile has given them, plus Foster's popular youtube channel, is a very entertaining story. Wouldn't be surprised to see them get promoted again next year. Their striker Paul Mullin looks a serious player.

Agree. The passion is clear to see. I look forward to following their progress next season.

They're not a romantic story they pay league 1 wages in the conference. Paul Mullin was previously the top scorer in league 2 for Cambridge. Its an interesting story and I enjoyed the documentary series and look forward to the next one but these are the man city of their level.

Ah give over. Reynolds is worth a couple of hundred million. He can make more in a few weeks of acting then Wrexham is worth.

It makes no logical sense for him to spend so much time on a project that will yield such minor gains. The only logical conclusion is that he’s invested in it for more then money.

It is a romantic story in the context of how poxy and corrupt the sport has become and how far down Wrexham fell. Good to see honest owners really invest in a club in every way, using ingenuity to grow the club what’s not to like ?

Passion is clear to see, Rob especially is a huge sports fan. I suppose end goal is get them to the premier League and cash out but that's hugely speculative and they could invest there money in something far safer. Seem to be at the games alot too which is impressive considering they live in LA

Fair play to them kept there word, invested and pushed on.

I’m not suggesting they haven’t ambitions, but like you said there are cheaper , less risky ways to make money. It’s at the very least a passion project that they look to be completely committing to so far.

Strong squad, new stadium, owners using their talent to grow the club , they have endeared themselves to the fans and they actually spend time at the club.

A great finish - considering how high the ball bounced.

In 08/09 it was the amount of draws that killed Liverpool. I think they were still ahead of United in April but United had games in hand.

Looks like the same is going to happen to Arsenal now.

Arsenal now have to win all remaing 6 games with the pressure already appearing to have gotten to them.

If City beat Arsenal and win they're 2 games in hand they go 4 points clear with 5 games to go.

If that happens I think Arsenal might wilt more and City will win the league by 7 or 8 points

But basically they are the Man City of non league. It's just 'nice' because they are not bothering the elites of the PL and instead are financially outmuscling the minnows of the national league.

The owners do seem to care a lot which is good. So did Abramovic.

Not everyone who invests money in football clubs are attempting to sports wash human rights abuses in countries they govern. Wrexham's story is more akin to Jack Walker's Blackburn with the obvious caveat that they're not local to the area.

I would be very surprised if you can find me one post were someone was genuinely of the opinion that City were saving football the past few years. Maybe you're confusing that with some rivalry bias posting?

11 years ago most, if not all Liverpool fans were delighted to see City win the league when it prevented MUFC from winning their 20th title and moving ahead of LFC for number of sll time league title wins. I don't remember any posts then about City destroying football/cheating their way to success.

It seems ridiculous that I need to point this out, football fans are biased when matters involve their own club/rivals/etc. If it had been MUFC challenging City for the past 4 years, do you think it would have been any different? No, it wouldn't. You'd still have a small amount of fans (just from different clubs) on the wind up here claiming City were "saving football".

People seem to be comically overinflating just how wealthy Reynolds is if they are comparing him to Abramovich and City, he couldn't afford to bank roll the club to that level.

The fact Wrexham average near 10k attendance a game when some League One clubs only average 6 or 7 would be more relevant.

11 years ago, a lot of people were probably happy to see a new challenger arrive on the scene and break up the dominance of a behemoth. I don't think anyone thought about the implications at that stage. No one probably expected the first 1 billion pound team to be assembled for a club that was borderline in administration 3 years prior. Sadly now, that club has changed the order of things (apparently off the books) and has utterly distorted the financial model required for organic success. The game has changed and not for the benefit of fans.

I never mentioned the word genuine but there were plenty of posts about saving football when they were beating Liverpool to the league.

I think the comparison was made relative to league position and expenditure. Chelsea have a reported annual wage bill of 235M whereas Wrexham's is 2.3M (or about 15% of what Chelsea pay Raheem Sterling).

So the comparison still stands. Reynolds is easily able to bankroll a wrexham side to blow away the league they are in, and the league they are about to enter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,244 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Of course no one is suggesting that they are bad people. I just don't think there's anything romantic about one of the biggest clubs in a division with a comparatively very wealthy, well connected owner winning the league.

Awful from Spurs, I can't remember seeing such stark half-hearted defending, not just for the goal, but same again in the 4th minute. No urgency, no challenges going in.

edit: and there's the second, seemed like he had all the time in the world. Must check out what Spurs fans are saying.

edit: holy moley, 3 down in 8 minutes. Again everyone just backs away from him. Go Spurs!

Spurs are just so so bad. 2 nil down after 5 mins

Truly awful by Spurs, 3 down after 9 minutes. This could be any score if Newcastle keep the foot on their throat.

    3 now

This could be a cricket score. Newcastle for top 4 is looking nailed on

If there was a definition of Spursy in the dictionary…

Also, thought this Porro lad was supposed to be an upgrade on Doherty, he’s shite.
