One English team and 3 serie a ones left in champions league doesn’t say a lot for the strength of the league. In years when English teams are dominating Europe it’s mentioned as an example of how strong England is and it’s ignored when they are not.

Man United have been nothing short of inconsistent with erratic form and snippets of hope sprinkled into their season and yet they are currently the 3rd best team in the league. indeed Uniteds current points tally isn’t far off last season which was a disaster!

Spurs are a mess and may yet get a top 4 spot. Newcastle were bottom of the league 16 months ago! I’d say 65 points might be enough to get top 4, has there ever been lower than that? That’s not a shining endorsement of the league.

There have been seasons when 2 English teams made it to the final, and there were 4 English teams in the quarter finals of the tournament aswell. Indeed United and Chelsea made it to the final and battled it out for the league in the same season so the suggestion the league is as strong as it every was is extremely debatable. there next season there was 4 English teams in the quarter finals that season, one knocked out by Chelsea.

The next season United and Chelsea both made it to semis of Europe (United lost in final), they were two strong English teams who pushed each other in Europe and England, we just don’t have that now).

Three seasons in a row back then there was 3 English teams in semi finals of the champions league!!

There has been some sort of vaccume this season with Chelsea , Liverpool and United having their own serious issues that have made it a relatively easy task for anybody above them to beat them and drop less points. I don’t class getting 90+ points any different to getting 85 as you get a league title regardless. The level of quality competing also changes yearly and it’s not easy to assess that quality.

I wouldn’t confidently profess that the league was stronger back then but there’s a debate to be had and it looks like the quality of the teams battling below the top 2 have declined. Seems like the smaller teams have gotten stronger which does make the league stronger per se, but the quality at the top has somewhat stagnated.

Ah here he moved his arm towards the ball he knew exactly what he was doing.

It’s one of those ones where in slow-mo it looks super obvious, and like it was entirely intentional, but looked at in regular speed it’s smashed at him so hard and so fast from so close that I’m not sure there’s actually time for intent, with any movement being pure protective instinct from the ball flying at ya. So I’m on the fence about it - but definitely expected it to be disallowed.

Being inconsistent is worse than being wrong though - at least if they’re always wrong on how they interpret something then it’s equal (and we’ve seen tonnes of handballs given this year that players could do nothing about). So in terms of what a handball is supposed to be on paper, I think maybe they could have actually been right, while still making a decision that goes against the precedent they’ve set themselves, making them wrong. 🤷

I mean there's a very good chance English teams win the conference league, europa league and champions league. The drop off is just Chelsea and Livepool being CL representatives but having poor seasons, which can be seen by them being 8th & 11th in the league.

That’s true but the amount of English teams challenging in Europe is very small which suggests the quality of top clubs in the league is less then it was lat 00s.

Chelsea won the CL finishing low down in league. I don’t think man United and Newcastle or spurs have made the league stronger then last seasons top 4!

Theres more Italian and Spanish just as likely to win everything aswell. If the EPL is so superior this shouldn’t happen.

Very good chance is a stretch. Only 1 team in each tournament and West Ham are struggling against a Belgian side. United are 50/50 vs Sevilla and could have Juve after that and possibly Roma in the final.

Arsenal and Spurs both out to teams they should be better than (Arsenal obviously didn't give a sht)

Did Sky say last night that Meslier has conceded the 11 goals from the last 11 shots opponents have had on target?

I'm getting sick of the standard of refereeing in the Premier League but with Antonio, Maguire and Trent, I have to say the NBA is getting exciting!

I can see why a peno could be given against Maguire based on the current interpretations that will probably change next week but I am getting fed up of the constant tweaking of the rules of the sport. The ball falling onto somebody's hand or even being hammered towards a player and a peno being given when they had no chance to move their arm is a load of sh*t.

A ref in my sons under 12 game gave a penalty for a blocked shot that hit a Childs hand. The child had no chance of moving his hand and it wasnt high or in a ridiculous position. I am sick of all these changes to the rules, just leave the sport as is, stop this micro managing sh*t and get on with it.

Unless its clearly ball to hand or your arm or hand is really high up to block something (like star fish bad). Maguires clumsy moment shouldn't be a penalty by the rules of the game for me. When I think of the goal some team scored against United, where the ball rolled down your mans arm and nothing was given , I have little time for incidents like Maguires.

Sort out the diving and cheating and the cynical sh*t, rather then accidents that should supposedly warrant punishment.

Instead of making the sport simple, they are over complicating thing now and allowing VAR and technology to make a balls of the sport.

I think he made 1 save last night but that was either after he had conceded 5 goals from 5 shots or else 6 goals from 6 shots.

I think defenders for years have been getting away with turning away from the ball with their arms away from their body and claiming innocence when it hits said arm. I think if the arm moves toward the ball in those circumstances there is a conversation to be had.

With Maguire he's going for the ball with 2 or 3 other players who effect his arm and they all miss it. Could have been given but would be unduly harsh imo.

Think was 10 from 11. Would be really great if the defence didn't allow everything flow through it with ease, might make a save then

Saw there that Klopp was commenting on the fact that Salah now has scored the most left-footed goals in the Premier League.

I looked up the overall top scorers and the top 3 players in the overall chart, still playing are

    image.png

Amazingly, Mo and Jamie have achieved their quite similar targets over the same number of seasons, 9. In reality, of course, for the first three of those seasons for Mo, he was at Chelsea (or out on loan) and only got 2 goals in that time frame.

Harry is now "only" 54 shy of Shearer and I'm wondering if chasing that target will ensure he remains in England, even if not necessarily at Tottenham.

Apparently Enrique is out of running for Chelsea as well. Poch the heavy favourite atm.

Chelsea were obviously very keen on Nagelsmann. They were so keen that they appointed a caretaker in order to wait for Nagelsmann.

What about him exactly do Chelsea think makes him "the one" ?

Outside of being good at selling his brand as another one of these football nerds what is the massive appeal.

Im not arguing that he is not good but he is not exceptional either.

No manager worth anything would agree to work under the conditions Potter worked under, no suprise Nagelsmann thought better of it.

I can't see anyone with sincere ambitions working under Boehly, with the transfer policy, lack of strategy and the dressing room antics...total nightmare.

More than likely Chelsea will end up with an other spineless yes man like Potter and it'll be another disaster.

Attempting to explain the rationale of Todd Boehly is a big ask for anyone. But after Potter, Mudryk, and Fernandez it's fair to say he does have a great appetite for the flavour of the month.

Arsenal throw away 2 * 2-0 leads and now gift a howler of a goal after 30 seconds. There won't be the stupid time wasting for a while at least tonight.

Jesus looked awful fired up just there arguing with the Southampton player about a corner.

Are the player too fired up? Are they right mentally? Time will tell now.
