Do Garda speed guns send out automatic fines?

I know speed vans send out automatic fines but I always assumed that you had to be pulled over to be issued a fine if caught by a Garda holding a speed gun. However, I was driving the other day and seen a Garda standing with a speed gun but she was on her own and there was no car or anything around if she did need to pursue a driver.

Typically if a member of the Garda detects you exceeding the speed limit, they will attempt to stop you in person.

However there is no absolute requirement to do so and an FCN could simply be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The latest TruCam2 speed detection cameras can take photos and videos also.

They're usually in communication with other Gardai who will pull over / pursue those exceeding the limit by a sufficient margin. They could be quite a way up the road and concealed from view.

Not usually. The vast majority of Garda speed detection intercepts involve a single vehicle.

Not so much nowadays. They seem to be stopping fewer and sending FCNs instead. It's more manpower efficient.

S81 RTA 2010 I believe deals with the evidence, it does not mention anything about having to chance you down, just the usual requirement to provide documentation be fore the trial.

A garda is entitled to instruct a vehicle to stop. Failure to stop is an offence.

To be seen instructing the vehicle to stop, they can only really do it with approaching vehicles.

If the vehicle doesn't stop, they can be prosecuted in the usual way.

Under Irish law there are only 3 professions entitled to stop traffic, Gardai, traffic mgmt. Operatives and...farmers. (just as an aside)

If you don't receive a summons it's not your problem.

Maybe they were just trying to scare people into driving at the speed limit.

It's just the waiting game I hate especially with speed vans. Should be a way of checking instead of being left waiting to see if a letter will come up to 6 weeks after.

Tripod cameras can and do.

Your unofficial "leeway" is 10% although it depends on the Garda.

I highly doubt a Garda in the whole country would do you for 33 km/h or 34 km/h on the Quays in a 30 km/h zone.

Whereas you'd get your ass handed to you for 132 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

What would happen if a Garda just had the hairdryer camera and some clown flew by at 250 km/h?

By the time the Garda starts the car or bike, gets in gear and moves off they'd be gone into the sunset over the horizon.

I always stick to the speed limit, I actually tend to go a bit below it. The only time I might go a bit above it is when I'm first and there's a huge queue of traffic behind me.

could be that the super has a mandatory number of days he needs to dedicate to speed checks, just sends one garda out and signs off on '10 hours of speed checks performed, no offences detected'.

it'd explain the ludicrously low levels of speeding they claim to detect, anyway.
