How do you know he was looking for a red card all game? There was an incident where Jesus threw himself the the ground when Robertson was beside him and that lineman bought it not long before HT maybe he was going to ask him about that.

From the motd footage it looked like the assistant ref didnt connect with robertson though robertsons reaction suggested he did , hard to know with footballers. Ref should be stood down for a few games but Robertsons should also get some punishment for haranguing ref. They need to punish players for getting in the face of the officials, eventually after a few bans the player would stop doing it.

All players will approach the officials at HT to ask about decisions they have made, Liverpool may get a fine but they only surrounded the ref after the elbow from the lineman.

Linesman should not have been out in the 2nd half as a few decisions he then got incorrect in the 2nd half too given Arsenal decisions when it was Arsenal players who kicked the ball out of the play.

I know more Ipswich fans than city fans, their fanbase doesn't look like its growing as much as it should considering their success.

Not taking Qatari season ticket holders into account as that explains why they can't make the home games every second week and why the stadium looks empty. The tickets have already been sold so that explains the full house percentages we are fed...

The linesman will be doing well to keep his job. The complete lack of self control on his part is inexcusable.

So in all your years of watching football you have never seen players going over to the officials are HT or FT to ask about decision until today

Never heard of the timberwolves, sounds like some team from some American sport nobody cares about.

Crazy decision he made from something that looked like a normal interaction a player would have. He should be dumped from his job for his reaction.

I can’t see how he survives it. Given what Mitro got for something much lesser. Imagine this thread if Robertson did the same thing to the referee?

The ref who kicked out at a player in France hasn’t reffed again since and I’d expect that to be the same here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭d22ontour

Mitrovic from the player pov was worse because we view what the player does as having an effect. What the official did is something we are not used to seeing. He should be sacked or demoted to championship for that. Pretty weird to be discussing what ban an official should get but it should be severe.

Players do that all the time. It wasn't even particularly aggressive from Robertson from what we can see. You just can't do that as a match official. Crazy stuff.

For what it's worth, it was the same referee and linesman today that sent off Robertson against Spurs, and then wouldn't send off Kane in the same game when he should have been. After the game, Klopp made his feelings know about that.

In a weird way the stupid thing is that the whole thing sort of changed the game in a way. Robertson couldn't tackle in the second half out of fear of being sent off for a second yellow card.

All premier league officials to wear t shirts supporting the linesman next weekend.

It really seems the relationship between players/managers and officials is getting worse since VAR was introduced. The officials are even less accountable than before it seems. The players are just sick of putting up with their incompetence and it's boiling over. Both sides are getting more angry but for me mainly it is the fault of awful referees.

The PGMOL or whatever it's called come out and apologize and that's the end of it? I don't think so. They only apologized for one incident in the Brighton game as well.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

What would also help is if players/managers stopped trying to cheat and also stopped screaming if officials faces.

Do the players come out after games and apologize about taking a dive ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,244 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

That's also true in fairness, especially about appealing vociferously. But with VAR there players and fans just don't understand how decisions can be so inconsistent from one game to the next. It's like the officials are still grading on a curve (like pre VAR) instead of individually assessing each incident in relation to the rules.

Football needs to take a leaf out of rugby's book.

Stop trying to cheat for a start. The rolling around is awful. No wonder refs are pissed off with players, always trying to get one over them.

Have respect for the ref. Only the captain should be allowed to approach the ref. That's really what it comes down to. A basic lack of respect for the officials and the opposition. They get paid enough, that they should do better.

You think rugby players don't cheat ?

    Is this a windup.

Do you know those lads you see in Sunday League that are pure mouth pieces and think they are hard squaring up to opponents?

Robertson is the PL equivalant of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,452 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    This is 100%.

Unfortunately the authorities have let it go on too long now, that it can't be reigned back in. It's now part of the fabric of football. You can see it from underage level right up to the professional game.

Every professional game is played by 22 cheats, who will employ any tactics to win. They dive, play act, feign injury, threaten, pressurise officials etc, anything to win. There isn't a single player in the world now who isn't a cheat.

The only thing that would work is making a rule that only 2 players from each team (I was gunna say one but the first player may have a ropey standard of English so I'll allow an extra one) may talk to the referee after play has been stopped.

Any additional players attempting to communicate with an official in this period will recieve an automatic yellow card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,328 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Ya the captain thing from rugby won't work in soccer due to soccer having a more expanded active playing area.

1or 2 players but any 1 or 2 would work much better.

I’m not going to comment on Robertson but FFs this sport is becoming a parody of itself. Raising your elbow that brushes off a person face is “assault”? That’s not assault , that’s a warning shot, get the f**k away from me.

I f**king hate how soft the sport and its fans are getting. Red cards for what you might of done to a player. Red cards if something looks bad in hyper slow motion but does f**I all damage. Red cards for bad optic moments. When are pre-cog red cards coming for what a player was probably going to do ?

It’s like when southpark did a skit on wrestling and by the end of it the side stories were the main element of the sport. It’s pathetic , I’m sick of it , get rid of most of the use of VaR, get rid of inconsistent use of slow motion replays to punish players and punish things that actually cause damage. Punish players and a manager for going anywhere near a ref!!

Christian Erikson has been injured for months because of a terrible tackle from Andy Carroll. Yet Casemerio has missed 7 games for grabbing a lad by his collar and a tackle that others got away with the same weekend. Casemerio injured nobody, Caroll put half of Erikson season on ice and didn’t even get booked or retrospectively punished. Im sure this has happened to other players on other teams , I just happen to know of United, I’m sure there’s far better examples. The sport is a massive joke , addressing the wrong things. It’s all about protecting the product and how it looks, nothing to do with player or referee welfare.

Reffing has gone to sh*t because the sport is chasing its own tail. I really pity refs, as a coach at young age, they just take dogs abuse and are expected to be angels. The uproar against the ref is just a sign of how little respect and appreciation the sport has for refs, which regularly shows its head on the pitch. I hope the refs fight back and go on strike; let’s see how the league does then!!

I thought part of the point of a third official was to free up refs? I think any protests should be directed at 3rd official otherwise yellow card for anybody going near a ref.

Yellow card for telling ref to f**k off aswell. You can regularly see players mouth it to them and nothing done.

A zero tolerance crackdown until there is actual respect for refs and then you work with players and managers. It’s all one way at this stage.

Your take on this would be wildly different if Robertson did the same thing to the Lino.
