Another poor drive from Rory. Young preceded him doing the same.

Young had to just hack out, right up against the lip. Rory avoids bunker so hopefully takes advantage...alright position anyway

That's a shocker from Scheffler. 4 foot putt to win his match, took forever lining it up and missed. On they go.

Jaysus! I wasn’t expecting that! Very disappointing.

    Blew that

2up with 3 to play, should not have lost that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,325 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Very disappointing end. Good match though

####### hell Rory made a mess of that hole as well. Got a lucky break on his drive, Young in the bunker hampered. Still Rory messed it up. Young is through.

2 up with 3 to play Rory has to see that one out, very disappointing.

Huge blow also to sky sports as I like most will probably switch it off now, no one cares about the 3rd/4th place play off.

Burns has big advantage on the 3rd play-off hole against Scheffler.

Say Mcillroy just wants to head home now, no need for a 3rd/4th place playoff

Halfway through both rounds it looked like it would be McIlroy v Scheffler in the final. Instead they're playing in the 3rd/4th place match.

i suspect it is to fill time during the broadcast of the final. I’ve always thought any 3rd play playoff in sport is a complete waste of time and must be tortuous for competitors just knocked out at the semi stage. No doubt there is a financial incentive to win though.

Yet live shots will still be missed cos of ads

Rory probably played the play off hole sensibly in the circumstances, Young kinda sneaked it

A bit like the final round in the Open. Too tentative. You have to take your chances in matchplay.

I'd say Rory would still like to beat Scottie. Might feel like it will give him a psychological edge ahead of the Masters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,673 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

He'd prefer to win for sure. But he'd prefer to not have to play. By some distance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭big_drive

Possibly but it looked unlikely that Young was going to birdie so Rory was never going to go too aggressive with his second shot

Ask them to get the players to wait until ads are over to play their shots. Sorted.

I guess hindsight is perfect, but he was a little over 200 yards out and the layed up. That's not match winning mindset.

Finished third overall. Still beat Scottie, so there's that.

Anybody think that Rory's big weakness is bombing the drives? They look awesome when they are on target but they cost him dearly when they are off target. I don't think you have to bomb it on every hole.

A little more control would see him more accurate. It's fine to hit it hard on par fives and long par fours but there's lots of holes where a full shot in is a better option than having 50 or 60 yards left.

It just appears to me that he wants to show off his length on every hole.

Well as @BoardsMember said, when he plays it safe it really doesn't work out for him. I'm sure he has a target on each hole when he takes out the driver. The risk/reward element would usually be in his favour since he got to the last four with it. Where he lost out in the semi was when he chose the cautious approach.

And he's back up to number two in the world with that third place finish, so not a bad return for a week's work. Have to say it's a very draining tournament with a huge amount of golf played. Up to 126 holes (7 rounds) of golf in the space of five days is some flogging.

It just means less practice and more time on the course. He'd be walking further but if anything swinging the club less.

It's not so much the physical effort, although that's tough enough. It's the mental effort, especially in match play that takes its toll.

I'd personally be of the opinion that matchplay is much more enjoyable and less stressful.

    That's from my own perspective.

It's different which is good. There's rarely a decision about preventing a big score on a hole, you gotta go for it most of the time. Decisions are a lot simpler. It's always a two ball, faster play. I'd guess the rounds were 90 minutes quicker than normal.

I'm with you on that. I love match play. But I do reckon it takes more of a mental toll than stroke play. It can definitely be faster, but also can go beyond 18 holes.

Disappointing round for Rory....not out of it but a lot of quality ahead of him.....think he'll win a major this year but not the masters unfortunately

Can't see him turning around a 7 shot lead day one. He just made silly mistakes. Made the birdies he should have but to many errors creeping in.

He needs at least a 65 tomorrow to get back into contention.
