But you are giving Louth a get out from their Dublin game just because it's the last game. Why don't all the other teams get a bye from their trip to Dublin ?

You could hardly pick a worse example than Louth. Limerick, Clare and lots of other counties have the stadiums, but not Louth. And it would be taking away the opportunity, maybe once in a career for Louth players to play in Croke Park. Which is supposed to be a big ambition.

How do you decide who is the weaker or stronger team......on last year's placing. Would it mean that the winner of D1 last years would have seven away games this year or play the four weakest teams away.

The league is balanced if you have four home games this year you have three next year unless you are promoted or relegated whereby you fall into the one of the other team places.

There is an old saying ''hard cases make bad law''. It the same here the league works tinkering with it because of a one off occasion is a bad idea

Based on previous performances in the league and championship, worked out on a coefficient. It is how they work out team rankings in soccer. Not that difficult to do.

To be honest I don't agree that the league is balanced as is. One year a team gets more home games, the next year they get more away games. Then you factor in whether a team gets promoted, relegated or stays in the same league. That completely changes the whole nature of the current 'home' and 'away' system.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

There is an excellent thread that has compiled a rankings table on here, courtesy of @laoisman11, really great work and interesting to keep track of if that's your thing. I don't know though if games should be fixed using criteria like that though, I don't think we're there yet.

One thing that might be interesting may be to have something like a MEGA WEEKEND like they have in rugby league, where one round of games is played together in a neutral venue. Say bring all the D4 teams to Croke Park for a day, play the 4 league games there, have a bit of razzmatazz around the game, low cost tickets, music and sh1te,. Teams told have 3 home, 3 away games and the neutral game. Maybe bring games to London, NY, Glasgow, Paris, Chicago, spread the Gospel

Something like that sounds like bit of craic, and adding a novelty to it. Neutrals would be tuning in. Fellas booking holidays abroad around it.

I suppose I am bit frustrated that the league is such a great 'product'. But the GAA don't seem to do anything with it at all. It is just 'there', and the GAA don't seem to know what to do with it.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

BTW, there was Rugby and LGFA games on RTÉ and TG4 today, at the same time, so it can be done obviously.

The reason I love GAA more than any other sport is that we have kept the razzmatazz out.

I wouldn't like it in the league. But I think it's a interesting idea for the provincials/AI. Maybe only for those in D3/4 though?

The county system in inheretantly unfair so why not? Given the Tailteann Cup now though it would apply to very few in the Championship groups.

Ah now, even your fellow countyman Shane Dowling got suited and booted to the nines for TSG!

As long as he isn't coming on to the pitch to big flame throwers and a stupid light show like over in Thomond Park I'm happy.

The current football league format is about as good and as fair as it gets. Don't see a problem with it.

I just turned on TG4, doing a few jobs around the house and saw the last second of a clip of Cluxton. Is he back?!

    No. 28 on him.

The championship has just gotten a lot more interesting with the return of the great quarter back! As an oul lad nearer to 50 than 40 I love these type of stories.

This is pure Undertaker rising from the coffin stuff out of WWE 😅

A great addition. He'll be well able to deliver the kickouts and the reflexes will be adequate too.

This won't be of any use to people, but I am watching the Dublin Louth game on the TG4 satellite feed. The 4:2:2 format needs special equipment. It's on the 12716 frequency.

Monaghan have managed to survive in Div 1 for another year, with Armagh joining Donegal for the drop. A remarkable achievement for such a small county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,483 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Here is a question for youse is Connacht now the toughest/most competitive football province?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was a Galway v Mayo AIF with the Rossies causing a few shocks along the way.

Donegal don't seem right at all since they lost their three players (In other words Michael Murphy).

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I always forget how small Monaghan is. And in reverse I always forget how big Tyrone, Armagh* and Donegal are.

*I know population and GAA available population are not the same thing in NI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,835 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Yes, the 3 Connacht teams at the top of the League. But it shows the oddball nature of the competition, that Roscommon could also have got relegated today.

Armagh only beat Monaghan and Donegal, the other two teams in the bottom 3. That form sort of worked out, although Armagh only had a -1 scoring difference, and Monaghan were -10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,835 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Monaghan is only 32 square km smaller than Armagh. Armagh is the smallest of the six counties, Tyrone is the biggest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

Monaghan's population approx 65,000. To keep mixing it with the big boys in Div 1 is an incredible achievement really.

Didn't think today would turn out as it has for Monaghan. Great win and boost for the Championship campaign.

Always start McManus IMO, does his damage early.

Jimmy Keaveney is also rumoured to be making a comeback. Desperation stuff from Dessie I think.

Bit of an oddity in Division 2. Every team finished with a different number of League points.
