Hi am going to uk for a week , I am bringing my dog with me have a pet passport .

Does the following have to be done ?

· Have a tapeworm treatment (for dogs). Dogs travelling from, or returning from, Britain to Ireland will require treatment against tapeworm by a veterinarian 24 to 120 hours (1 to 5 days) before arrival in Ireland. If travelling with a passport issued in Ireland, this treatment may be entered into the pet passport by a UK vet.

or is that just for Uk pet owners ? its a bit confusing

I’m going in September with my dog for the first time and my understanding of it is that the tapeworm treatment is needed from UK to Ireland ,but its not needed from Ireland to UK ,as you say it is all confusing but looking at this UK site it says not needed from Ireland.

“You do not need to treat your dog for tapeworm if you’re coming directly to Great Britain from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta or Norway.”

Yes you have to do the worming treatment now returning from the UK, the same as if coming in from continental Europe.

If you are going for less than 5 days, you can get an Irish vet to do it before you leave Ireland. If over 5 days, a UK vet has to do it.

The treatment has to be recorded by the vet in the passport.

I believe the time frame is because the medication works within it so that the dog won't pass worms upon return to Ireland, so not introducing anything nasty into the country. Although as rabies is the only vaccination that is needed, there's nothing to prevent diseases such as distemper or parvo being brought in.

If travelling from GB to NI with no further onward travel then there will be no requirement for vaccinations or treatments, just the same as travelling from London to Glasgow.
