    All gone now!

But I have screen grabs to prove I haven't lost the plot...

I seen the 1922, 1947 info earlier aswell. Your not losing it!

You're right they have disappeared again. It was probably a test upload or something.

Not before time - thanks for the heads-up BowWow.

Hopefully they'll be up properly before too long.

We probably have to wait on Catherine Martin to return from where ever and "launch" it offically...

I heard about it after the fact - was away from my desk most of the day.

But probably means we're getting a St Patrick's day launch or the day before, since no one will be working on Friday!

I'm having problems with the website - it's still functioning but with a very basic display.

Is this the same for the rest of ye?

Good news - according to Irish Genealogy News another years worth of births, marriages and deaths have been added to the site.

Just my luck – I had one person on my list for 1922, born January in Cork. I already had the key details, a free cert would have been nice. She is in the update, even gives her mother’s maiden name, but no image. “There is currently no image to display. This may be because the record was registered or amended in a later year, or there are quality issues with the original image.”

So the birth must have been registered in 1923.

My main interest is in the early data – images from the 1860’s. I wonder will I see these in my lifetime?

Literally the same refrain from everyone, Mick. There's been no decent explanation as to the delay.

They've basically told me it's not their job to do it.

Claire Santry on Irish Genealogy News has suggested that those images should be given, as a project, to volunteers.

    Great idea - I'd volunteer.

    (663k records).

The coordination of volunteers would be more effort than paying a company to transcribe them!

I could not see it working as a 'supervisor - led' project. It would work IMO on a crows source basis, say on the model used by the Australians for TROVE.

Another example is New York City's bmd's, indexed and free online thru the joint volunteer efforts of the German Genealogical Group and the Italian Genealogical Group. New York's Reclaim the Records group has also done an amazing job at extracting records from the government and making them available to all. Tho I must say Ireland has been amazing at putting so much info free online.

Just thought to chip in info on Research Room for GRO at Werburgh Street. It is closed now until September. When it reopens Sept 5th, it will be the same one day a week, closed lunchtime. I know I could get some online but a couple need a good browse in books to pin down details. I was looking forward to getting back to pre covid research outings.... I miss the Gilbert Room in Pearse Library too.

It's very disappointing to read that.

I got in there recently and was told about the August closure. Frustrating to say the least!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,105 ✭✭✭cobham

Been trying for weeks to get a Tuesday free for day in city....😒

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭Jellybaby_1

Anyone know if this means the staff have August off for holidays or are they working behind the scenes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,105 ✭✭✭cobham

This is reply I got this morning so looks like email service unaffected by August closure.

The next office opening day to the public will be Tuesday 5th September.

    Opening hours are 10am – 12.30pm and 2.00pm – 4.30pm .

gov.ie - Search Room at the General Register Office (GRO) (www.gov.ie)

We offer an email service Monday to Friday (excluding bank hols) .

I have attached an information sheet with further information on our email service.

I don't mind the August closure so much - it's a known quantity - but rather the ongoing short hours for both the GRO and the Gilbert Room.

These are great resources and I hope at some point normal service will resume.

Thanks for sharing. Very disappointing. The online service is good but there are times when I'd prefer to do the search myself.

How long have they been working on these now? <rolls eyes> They're not at all, are they? So why say so? It's so frustrating.

    Deaths: 1871** to 1972

*The General Register Office are currently working on updating further records of Deaths dating back to 1864. These will be included in future updates to the records available on the website.
