I saw this from Dee re: An Cailin Ciúin, lots of talk about how well RTÉ did getting it to the Oscars etc, they really have gone all out mention how well they did.

Oh wait no sorry that's TG4, but if you can imagine replacing Toy Show the Musical with An Cailin Ciúin, you might here more about their Oscar nomination, and even if they didn't get the nods that they got CINE4 would still have been worth it from a PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING point of view.

I am also surprised that Sean Whelan was at the Oscars yet I don't think he produced a report in relation to the train derailments in Ohio?

Just keep one RTE channel as a Sports Channel. Very little else to watch on RTE except sport.

Tubs leaving the LLS is quite a turn of events, considering it was only a few weeks ago he said he was going nowhere for a good while. My guess is he wouldn't take any more pay cuts

Cut his wages to match his reduced hours

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,190 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I'd say it was planned, he had a cut in wages and said he'd finish on TLLS at the end of his contract and his new contract has TV built in, until the realise that he's not all that likeable.

2024: Tubs: The Irish Famine, New York The Irish Story, Ireland in Power in the US, Ireland and WW2, Ireland The Civil War.

2025: Tubs and Friends (AKA Pat Kenny In The Round)

2026: The Meaning Of Life but not the meaning of life because Joe Duffy is still presenting that one

2027: Scratch Saturday book review with Ryan Tubridy.

2028: Well much like Ray D'Arcy tubs won't be going on as many holidays from the radio show!

Pity they didn't get rid of him years ago, he really is hopeless.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

No but good news Dee has said she's going to consider changing the format.

I will do as Dee does and consider such changes and I will be as likely to effect that change as much as any former DG of RTÉ, I will of course have a chin wag with Bob Collins, Cathal Goan, Noel Curran and Dee Forbes so that we call also try to get the new DG to see our point of view. It will be a lot of fun!

People are at least cynical of RTÉ, "fans" of DWTS call out RTÉ Staffer win (a headline you won't find anywhere), but scrolling through twitter that seemed to be the impression I was getting. Along with the few "ah! sure its only a game, and didn't you enjoy it" or "I don't understand why people want to call out the presenter in question, is it really that important!".

The cynic in me suggested 8 weeks ago Carl was added to the roster of "stars" because RTÉ 2fm Breakfast was falling flat and the 2 presenters need something to drag the audience to them, did it work, well I hope not ... but that is just the cynic in me.

That show's been rigged ever since Aidan O'Mahony won in it's first year. You could tell the RTE folks were quite upset that Aidan won that one. The GAA vote even kept in Des Cahill. Since then, it's been rigged for the likes of Lottie or Mairead whatsherface.

One would have assumed that the stand-up comedy circuit would be active again since the lifting of Covid restrictions. So why is the Tommy Tiernan Show on RTÉ 1 still going on at the moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,823 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

It's pre-recorded. Filmed around October/ November according to folks in the know.

Tiernan is hopeless at everything but been good or half presentable has never been a prerequisite for becoming an Rte lifer. Brendan O'Carroll another example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,823 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

O'Connor married the former DG of RTE's daughter, so that's how he's a lifer. Which explains why his shows have been so cringey, yet he still has shows.

John Caden was never DG, he was a producer.

He left RTE over 25 years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,346 ✭✭✭✭elperello

What metric are you applying to TT's career to dismiss him as "hopeless at everything".

He's going now for over 30 years selling tickets and even winning awards for his comedy.

He has done acting work in film and TV as well as some radio presenting.

His current RTE show is drawing good viewing figures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,190 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Drawing in good viewers, it's lost a lot of them, though it is going a number of years.

RTÉ always flash the audience figures when they are good, but not so much when they are bad. Watch Claire Byrne's Ireland's Smartest get large numbers in week one, largely by people to see if she's good enough for TLLS and then the following week to have low figures because RTÉ don't seem to know how to produce the most basic of TV programmes.

I guess that you meant to refer to Brendan O'Connor, not Brendan O'Carroll.

O'Connor has his faults but at least, unlike Tiernan, he has empathy. He has a child who has Downs syndrome and, on an edition of his Saturday night show, he interviewed, in a sensitive manner, a couple who went to Britain so that the woman could have a termination because of her unborn child's foetal abnormality and also, tactfully, mentioned that, for the sake of balance, he had to state that there are people who would disagree with them.

I think she is. In fact, i'd put money on it.

Why do you think she isn't?

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,279 ✭✭✭political analyst

The Tiernan show isn't on next Saturday. Was last night's episode the last in the current series?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,190 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Yeah 12 week run, they have started to record Ask Me Anything, I assume that will start back in September and have a similar run.

Ah skimpy, we've had this one out before.

A large amount of the NK's contractors don't do the website...it really is as simple as that. They can choose whether to publicly align with him or not - it means nothing if they are not on the site. Take Maura Deranne for instance, she's not on the site either but she is NKM 100%

    From Met.ie -

Joanna is a regular contributor on the Claire Byrne Radio show where she is regularly heard talking about her favourite subject, the weather, the climate and weather lore. She is also a regular on the Today Show and is a member of the News Panel, discussing current events.

The basic rule is - If someone is a regular on CB radio/TV, they are NKM. Claire is utterly shameless promoting her team mates. I'm not sure why Claire does this or what's in it for her, I guess we'll never know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,582 ✭✭✭skimpydoo

I stand corrected. Why the hell does RTE allow this to happen? NK has too much power in RTE.

Well you are never going to find a station that doesn't big up their own output.

As for CB's new show it might be a wee bit early to be writing it off.

It might be but ... RTÉ have form on this ... and even if the show is not good Claire Byrne should be able to bring in those viewers.

And we should take an anylitical look at audience number when it comes to stars remember RTÉ states that these stars bring in revenue and that its only 1% of their total budget and that the rest goes on ... "other things".

Just think of Tubs in Gerry Ryan's old slot for 5 years and how that worked out.
