I tried to sell a projector, I agreed a price with someone, seemed fairly straight forward and normal. Heard nothing for a few days, then he messaged me saying he had a fight with his wife he is separating from and asked me would I hold it for a few more days. I had no other decent offers so said ok.

Then he messaged me saying he cant go with it, he wanted to buy it for him and his kid to watch movies together, telling me how evil his wife is, she stopped him from buying it so he couldn't spend time with his son.

    Bonkers.

I found FB even worse though for the same item. Item was €250 (I bought it 18 months previously from amazon for €425, there wasn't 100 hours on it). Numerous messages like this.

"Hi I'll call in a hour for €125 ok. Send me your address"

" I really want to buy this but I dont have €250 would you accept €100, I have cash will collect later"

I was clearing out a house too from a deceased family member, everything was going for free, tv's appliances, furniture, whatever you wanted. My only condition was you have to be able to remove the stuff yourself and must be collected on a certain date between 6-9pm. Most people were delighted, got a few bottles of wine and all. One person gave me dogs abuse for not helping her load a chest of drawers into her car, I got 2 negative feedbacks because someone turned up before 6 and another after 9. Really annoyed me I was trying to be decent and anything left was going in a skip that weekend, it made no difference to me.

i was absent mindedly browsing adverts this morning and found an ad where the item was listed as 'World War II' which to be fair, piqued my interest...

Sold an RTX 3070 for €420. Less than two weeks old. 13 watchers by the end. Premium ad.

And I ended up selling to a friend of someone I know on Discord who created an account and placed the offer on the ad.

    Painful.

Smooth transaction with the dude though. So that's something.

Well, yes and no. At its peak, it was even a great yoke for property to buy/let.

They were one of the 1st 'ISPs for the masses' during the dotcom. 56k world. Saw the writing on the wall for their business but unfortunately it couldn't transition successfully (hope they/dem aren't offended by my 'it'). Dondeal was 2004 maybe? Simple idea but just needed the groundswell of internet take-up and a crystal clear model and payments process.

Its up and down and someone wanted something and wanted to pay at my door with Revolut but i never mentioned i had or use it and went away in a huff. Mentioned the amount with Cash price.

Up and Down with sales and movement and even 3 years up eventually it might sell so it gets repurposed.

I want to sell a carbon racer but cant bring myself to put it on adverts!

Put up a bike there recently and had someone saying it was fake... I wasnt asking much at all and ended up selling it to a mate.

Id say sold it for half the value it was worth I just wanted the space.

Same with the racer, some people just like to sabotage ads

I’d honestly consider it trolling from sad people. Look it’s a different story if there’s an obvious scam I suppose but going into peoples listings just to say stupid shite like “you can get that cheaper [shop]” or some baseless accusations all designed just to spoil your ads.

doesn’t seem like there’s any mods like there used to be. Adverts in some ways feels abandoned tbh sort of just.. there but no one in charge really gives a crap anymore

Ha! I was looking for the rest of that as it summed up my experience selling on Adverts ;)

Have a DSLR camera up for sale at the moment. 200 quid. Some lad offered me 50 for it. Thought it was a joke. Checked his recent comments. He had offered about 1/4 asking (or less) on basically every DSLR on adverts. Same with electric bikes. 700 asking, 100 offered. Absolute clown.

Yep, clown indeed. To stop it, you need to put in a minimum price. If he tries to circumvent that, he gets removed.

“you can get that cheaper [shop]” or some baseless accusations

I often look at listings for second hand stuff that can be got cheaper brand new with a guarantee if you shop around. While I wouldn't do it myself I welcome someone pointing that out to people that don't know any better.

The accusations aren't always baseless and some go to show how badly traders on adverts are prepared to rip people off.

Take a look at this "spoiler" add is for €230 and copies the description with all the pictures from https://www.adverts.ie/other-electronics/120-watt-solar-panel-with-monocrystalline-highly-efficient-aluminium-frame-solar-panel/27980672 . The spoiler asks if the item is the same as this one on Amazon which of course will have free delivery and a guarantee at a price of €110.

Wake me up when it's all over.

    i can’t abide it tbh

like I wouldn’t go to Argos and tell the staff DID are selling X or Y for less than they are.

It someone wants to charge €230 for something you can buy on Amazon for just over €100 then that’s their business?

I just don’t get why some people feel the need to police what people are charging and honestly if you buy something and pay over RRP then you should’ve done better research 😅

I put up an iMac for parts, as the main board was fried. Got half what I was asking, so €30. Explained hard drives removed and screen disconnected.

After buyer collected it two months later, he sent me a message saying it wouldn't turn on and the screen was blank.

I mean buyer took two months to collect! They'd already made the payment when they bought it. So I brought it home from work, and had it taking up space the whole time. Should have just brought it to the dump.

I think just dealing with people is the problem. I had to move last year and was selling up alot of things including outdoor furniture, two chairs and a table. One person came to collect and it wouldn't fit in the car and changed their mind. So I changed the add saying that a van was needed to collect. Was contacted by another person who wanted to collect by car and kept asking if it would work if they dropped the seats. I needed it gone and just didn't have time to waste, so told them that if they didn't have a van that I'll find someone else to buy it.

I had one guy coming from Offaly to Dublin to collect something from me. Only called to let me know he wasn't going to make it, after he was already 15 minutes late. Asshole would have been well aware he wasn't going to make it over an 90 minutes earlier. Totally wasted my time.

The silliest thing about adverts is, say you put something up for around a tenner.

First person comes along and says they'll take it.

One look at their profile tells you they are 150 miles away.

When you point this out to them, they ask you to drop it to them.

    Retards!

There are a tremendous amount of messers on there. I buy and sell on it but have nearly given up selling because of messing and anyway I don't like weirdos calling to the house.

I find that, as a buyer, if you communicate well, turn up on time and behave like a civilised human being, sellers are delighted/relieved/surprised.

One way of weeding out messer buyers is comparing the ratio of offers/comments to feedback. 50 comments and 5 positive feedbacks = probable messer.

It's not a great position for either side, but...

As a seller you've probably accepted a bid that you're just about ok with. And you had the postage fee debate already. And now you ask the buyer for Friends & Family so neither you nor they have to pay any fees.

Why would a buyer refuse it? Or make a big deal out of it?

Ok, the fee gives you a PayPal buyer protection. I don't really know what that protection is really worth when it comes to a dispute. How easy or difficult it is for a buyer to get their money back.

But it's a buyers protection. Why shouldn't the buyer pay for it?

If they were paying me with PayPal as i would request F + F and if need be check out my feedback.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,206 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

I always state something like €50 offered to include P&P and payment by paypal.

If it helps people that don't realise that because the are selling something they are sellers then maybe I should add pay by paypal (not friends and family).

Once they have accepted an offer where I've already stated I will pay by paypal I don't expect a request for a friends and family payment.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I can see both sides. I imagine like most people I've bought and sold on adverts.

In your example buyer & payer agreed to do Paypal as you say. But Paypal F&F is still Paypal. Why should it be a given that the seller should pay for an extra PayPal fee that only benefits the buyer? Especially when there is a way where no one has to pay a fee.

Say for an item that's worth €50 the Paypal fee I think is nearly €2.50 that's another 5% and you don't even get your square fifty out of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,188 ✭✭✭greasepalm

But selling as Friends and Family its the same amount giving and receiving unless its another country not in EU then fees and transactions come into place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,206 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

The hint is in the name "Seller" a seller I don't know isn't a friend and isn't family. I fund my PayPal by card not by credit balance so I'm fairly sure paypal charge me something in the order of 3% for paying friends and family.

Funny there is any argument if this was a thread I about being conned after paying someone by friends and family there would be a queue of people saying never pay by friends and family.

Wake me up when it's all over.

No objection to not use F&F. I'm all for extra protection. But why should the seller pay for it?
