Expiring NCB, is it really that bad ?

    Hi,

My NCB expires in August, since COVID I have been WFH and we got rid of our second car, so I have not had insurance in my own name since August 2021.

I have been a named driver on my wife's policy for years.

If I don't get my own insurance before my NCB expires in August am I really screwed if I look for insurance after then, or will it be not that bad, will the named driver experience count for something?

Other details I have a full license for the last 20+ years, no penalty points and the expiring NCB is a full one.

What most married couples I know do is swap the policy between them every 2 years, so this year you go as the policyholder, she goes as named driver and then you swap back to her again in 2 years. This will keep the NCB active for both of you.

Keep switching it. Daft system but they created it.

Does it matter who's name is on log book to be main driver?

That's something I'm not sure about.

I did an online quote with An Post Insurance and 123 where I was not the owner and I had no problems.

There is a drop down on the An Post where you specify who is the owner of the vehicle.

But Aviva on the other hand was a nightmare, I could not even complete the online form without having to select my current insurers.

I believe there is a question from most insurers that the car is yours and you are the primary driver of it

You can transfer the car from one to the other easily enough, and if you're married then I believe there's no tax liability for transferring assets between you.

I suppose the drawback is that it may show as an additional owner in the vehicle history which may affect resale value. This is probably worth checking into

I know a few couples who do swap insurance between them, none have ever mentioned needing to change the ownership. Perhaps it depends on the specific company and policy.

There is no issue regarding ownership of a car between spouses. Keep swapping every 2 years as suggested by others, your only option

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
