8: Well, that was a surprise! Though, ever since the
premonition about killing the Haruspex played by Alice Krige (Star Trek - Borg Queen), I started thinking they might well try cutting down the higher costing cast for a second season. Sure enough, it wasn't just her but also Piety (Indira Varma - Rome) and Absalom (Jared Harris - Chernobyl)
    .

    Towards the end there,
the city started looking a little Pact-like... so again thinking it could be an infiltration
    .

    Overall:
I thought the show had a lot of high quality detail put in to get the audience into the world.
They must have paid a fortune for the cast.
They sure managed to cram in a lot of sex for 8 episodes!
What an intricate and complex set of plot arcs
If I could mesh up a few shows, it felt a bit Ripper Street, Bright, Lord of the Rings and Boardwalk Empire.

    I wouldn't mind seeing more
about the state of the world / history of the war with the Pact.. but I guess the show is named after a street/area in the city so maybe they won't be pushing that direction too much
    .

As for it's future. It had season 2 greenlit from before release so I'm expecting that will surely arrive. There's a lot of stuff I'm not sure would hold an audience. Like Game of Thrones worked it's way slowly to include so much magic but this jumps right in at the deep end.
I'm not sure if it'll hook enough people for the budget that it looks to be spending. Also I'm not sure if season 2 will
be replacing the cast who died. It really does feel like Amazon spent a lot of money on the show.

Actually, just checked IMDB and RT. It's early days but it's gotten into the 80s!
Unsure if it's just early days with an audience into the type of universe though.

Overall decent, nice world building, interesting parallels to the real world on some things, it did fizzle a bit in episode 8 but generally good.

And kudos to Cara Delevingne for the most convincing Irish accent I think I've ever heard on screen (from a non-Irish actor).

Really enjoyed this overall. Shame some of my favourite characters didn't make it.

Two episodes in and enjoying it so far.

Carnival Row to end with season 2 at Amazon

I wonder if part of the reason is due to the large gap between filming and release. Season 2 filming was completed in September 2021 and is not releasing until February next year. First season aired in August 2019. some of the actors could have moved on to other projects

I'd say all the delays affected things and as you said, people move on to other projects. I'm sure they don't want to be tied to projects with long production times.

Hope they knew it was going to end when they made it so we have an ending.

Will have to rewatch season 1 before it airs.

Nah I'd go with my gut from my earlier post and say that just not enough people watched it for how much it cost.

Yeah. Think I'll need to watch a recap of season one.

Almost 4 Years since I've seen an episode!

At about 19 minutes, that's a long recap.. but by the end I felt I needed it. An awful lot happened in season one!

2.1: There was a recap at the start! 🙂 Worked well with the longer recap above.

Solid intro .. again.. caught up on all the characters. There's a big story in the background I think, a medium? level story for the season and lots of character stories. Feels like a consistent build on the last season.

Not sure on where the character stories are going. Maybe Vignette to become leader of the Black Ravens.

The middle story I think is for the season, for a mystery monster like season one, the monster that killed the guard and I guess for Philo to catch.

The big story.. now this I think caught my attention. The pact coming to the burgue, the pact airship coming over the boat at the end, the pact being in all the recaps. Could be the season will wrap with a Pact invasion about to start. So.. not the worst closing cliffhanger of a series that's not been renewed .. if they can at least wrap the monster story.

Budget wise.. Cast working fine. Locations all look solid. Most practical effects and make-up check! Some computer effects solid. So I think there were some cuts but the folks looking after the show look to have put in a good bit of effort to preserve what they could from season one.

Big win I thought was Vignette hugging Philo and the wings wrapped around him.

First thing that threw me was the centaur being picked up in the street. His head section looked.. kinda taxidermy-teddy-bear-ish.

The boat at the end, when they panned out and had the full boat, that was a bit cheap computer generated lookin. Might have been better to leave it to peoples imaginations as the rest of that scene seemed grand.

    From season one, I'd miss

Jared Harris all the same. His pressence makes a boost to all recent shows I remember him being in.

2.2: Only two episodes in but wow! what a well woven story! There's so much going on but it's not hard to follow. I wonder if they are having to pull lots of future planned stories into a shorter time since they only have this season for it.

lol, the pact have a revolution going on! I totally misread what was going on at the end of the first episode

Sophie Longerbane has that bigger plan of pitting the new dawn against the pact endlessly but also, how she seems to be controlling the businessmen to her own ends of getting rich.. that was well done!

then this monster of the season! playing off both sides in the burgue! that's someone smart doing that. hardly the advisor to Jonah Breakspear maybe? using the Philo thing as a cover.. maybe being a .. bigger? .. mastermind all along

Alice Krige! This role! She's doing great in it I think. Reminded me of her as the Borg Queen in Star Trek a little

    Philo's plan

Did anyone else think it was a stupid plan, reveal you're the last chancellors son and then the current one who's your supposed half brother loses his position on the chance the next chancellor is nicer which they inevitably won't be. Anyone running would come out even stronger against them.

That Pact guy seems to have noticed philo.

Pact seem to be part Prussian part Russian.

I think it's got to be that

he's being played somehow. Someone is pulling strings from somewhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2.3: Still can't figure out the bigger plan. Coming soon though looks like..

Black Raven maybe going to kill that copper? Then the coppers all come in like in Tourmalines vision and lot of folk in the row going to die.

    Big EWEEEE gross moment when

Ezra killed Feargus and then puked but then.. dangly puke hanging out of his mouth .. and like... did he half kinda play around with it with his finger and then leave it there?!! eewwwwee yuck!

Wasn't half as grossed out with the guts being pulled out of the body.. wierd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2.4: I like how Tourmalines story is going. I'm not sure that I've got the order of events solid in my head...

because I'm working off that vision Tourmaline had where Fae were all being slaughtered with knives. When the coppers came in at the end of this, I was thinking maybe that's the slaughter stopped by Philo and instead just a lot of broken bones. Though I'm not sure about Black Raven deaths.

Anyway, Tourmaline looks to be at a crossroads. She might well choose to embrace the dark magic and become a witch.

The feet / hooves bit earlier on was funny 🙂

2.5: Good episode! That was a great scene between the Chancellor and Sophie Longerbane at the dinner table!

WTF! He killed Sophie Longerbane! 😲 He was gonna off Runyons head too!

It didn't click with me about Runyon working with Sophie Longerbane until this episode when the Chancellor made him. Then it all made sense. Especailly that 'trust me' moment he had with Philo earlier on at Carnival Row.

Then got eaten alive too! 😱 That thing has so many teeth!

That's got to be a Fae controlling it! Looks like it freed Vignette. Hardly that Tourmaline finally figured out how or maybe was doing it unconsciously all along?

Anyway.. roll on the next episode!

    2.6: Right. So that's a new species/race I can't say I remember encountering before.

A Sparas eh? .. but who could it be. As I was thinking about it, the only person who might be free enough to be the Sparas and know the stuff the Sparas was involved in was maybe that Pact advisor/general guy. I dunno. I don't think it's Tourmaline anyway.

and Philo.. gone a bit Gollum-ey talking to himself like that. The prison warder guard really knocked it out of him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2.7: WTF! That's just stupid! Why..

did the black raven attack the Fae on their way out?! That doesn't make sense. They're stupid!

Unless this Sparas has some hold over them or is someone senior on the Fae side.

I haven't a clue. Just seem stupid is all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2.8: Right. Yeah ok. I guess. Still though..

that Sparas was there a while before the New Dawn arrived. I'm leaning more to it being that Pact advisor/general guy.. just that maybe he was working undercover for the new dawn.

    Oh.. also.. Spurnrose! 😲

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2.9: All looks setup for the final episode in this one.

Aha! Aha!!!!! I knew the Sparas was him!!! Ahaaaa!!!!! 😀 No, I'm not mad, you're mad! 😁

Damn that was pretty harsh what they did to Agreus to get the message to Imogen but there again.. I'm not sure they could've done without something at that level since they knew what the pair had been capable of with the brother.

Definitely thinking the chess pieces are all set now. Looks like it'll involve the massacre that was kinda on the sideline of Tourmalines vision of the Sparas coming for her earlier on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

aaannnnd Finished! Overall, this series was grand I thought. A kinda mix of the feel of a fantasy show with a cross in of Ripper Street.

They gave it a good shot. Just didn't have enough to pull in a big enough audience I guess.

The end was fine. No big cliffhanger. Just a kind of gentle.. the world goes on.

2.10: Yep, the setup unfurled as expected. Then they wrapped the show off.

Didn't even guess Philo would be the one to kill the Sparas from inside. Headshot will do it though.

All seemed very happily ever after in the end, the contrast of a free Tirnanoc at the end verus the hunt from the start of season 1.

Future: Well, the show left the open world there in case anyone wanted to give it a try. Nothing immediate though I think.
