What's going on there, a third and a backup tight end for Ramsey?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,613 ✭✭✭Shedite27

Odd one alright. I see Ramsey's salary goes from $5m next year to $40m guaranteed over the next few years, so presumably he wanted a restructured deal that the Rams wouldn't do. 3rd wa probably the top bid they got given those demands

I agree, I wouldnt say this trade on its own is a point towards collusion, it is everything else. It does however again show why it is stupid for QB needy teams to leave them on the draft board trying to be cute. Both Panthers and the Broncos have now given up a huge amount of draft capital and decent dollars to try to find a QB after not selecting Fields or Jones in 2021.

On the Lamar point though, I don't believe 'tying up a large amount of cap space' is really an issue - it is far more an excuse being thrown out to divert away from people calling out collusion. Teams can play around with first year of the deal so it is a low cap hit so they aren't blocked from doing other business. If a team is guaranteeing the whole contract it doesn't matter if it is extremely back loaded.

Seems like he really wanted to go to Miami and if it was anywhere else he wanted a significant pay increase which teams wouldn't give capital. Rumours that the Rams didn't want him in the NFC - which is pretty dumb if true.

If the Panthers hit with the QB this is a complete steal by them. They're paying less than recent teams have to move up to #1, or even the top 3.

Moore is decent but he isn't a top tier WR. Getting him is good from the Bears perspective as he is far better than what is available in FA, though that says more about FA, and Bears were desperate to find one, given the Claypool trade.

I'm really surprised by the general praise for Poles I've seen in the media. That deal is basically the floor I'd expect to move down that far - anyone even partial competency should have been able to get it. Add that to the horrible trade for Claypool mentioned earlier and I'd be very skeptical about him making the most of the picks.

Comparing it to the Trey Lance trade....

    • Niners went from 12 to 3 and gave up picks 29, 94 and future 1st
    • Panthers went from 9 to 1 and gave up Moore, pick 61, future 1st, future 2nd

Moved up a similar range to get the QB, future 1st cancel out (although I'd prefer a Panthers pick than a 9ers pick). Moore would get about pick 29 in open market I reckon, so Panthers gave up two seconds while 9ers gave up a 3rd to get their QB.

I feel like I'm being kind equating the Moore to only 2 spots more than Claypool and the Panthers 1st rounder is gonna be a lot higher than 9ers.

I agree if they hit, it'll be worth it, but if they miss, they'll have a few more 1.01's in their future

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

One of Panther's seconds is basically a third, though I don't argue they're similar deals

Biggest thing though is that getting up to #1 should cost significantly more than getting up to #3.

The number of picks to move up is similar but the power the #1 pick has in being able to pick the best player on their board. The cost to move up from #3 to #1 is drastically bigger than moving from #12 to #9.

It could be that there wasn't as much of a market as you mentioned due to the quality of the QBs. Historically though it isn't a haul that should be celebrated like most seem to feel.

Jonnu Smith traded for a 7th round pick to the Falcons. Only saves a small bit and still decent sized dead cap.

One of the bigger overpays within a position in recent FA

DJ Moore not a top tier receiver? He had over 1100 yards in '19, '20 and '21 with Kyle Allen, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold as the starting QBs. All of those missed time, whether benched or injured, and he had to play with backups.

Last year he fell back a bit but it was down to having six games with both Darnold and Mayfield and five with Walker. That's never going to work out well.

What he's done with awful QBs is amazing, put him with a top QB and he'd be incredible.

He is without doubt a top tier receiver, one of the very best in the league. And he's only 25.

Think the situation with the Panthers helped him build good numbers - there was minimal other targets. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of his.

It really depends on how big you put the top tier to be - for me he isn't in the Jefferson, Hill, Chase, Adams class. More in the grouping with the likes of McLaurin, Metcalf, and Lamb.

On age, he is only a few month younger than Lamar, who we all know is approaching 30... 😉

Well I'd put him in with AJ Brown, Waddle, Lamb and Diggs and I think he could, potentially, join that elite group if he played with a decent QB.

Jimmy G signs for the Raiders re-uniting with McDaniels on a 3 year deal $67.5m with $34m guaranteed

Well that contract seems insane to me but I guess he looked good with the Patriots under McDaniels so it might work out.

Still I'd much prefer pay Carr €40 million.

The 49ers have agreed to terms with defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, four-year deal maxing out at $84 million, including $40 million guaranteed.

Basically the deal they couldn't afford to give Buckner.

Like them making the DL even more of a strength while hurting their most likely competition for the NFC at the same time.

This deal will cancel out one of the Jimmy/McGlinchey comp picks but they should still get a third unless they make another splash.

Good luck to the Broncos with McGlinchey. He probably received more criticism than was warranted but it is madness to be paying him close to the top of the market for his position.

Aaron Rodgers' reply to Adam Schefter is an all time great moment 😂

Another "rebuild" for the Chiefs will all of these gone so far -

    Orlando Brown Jr.

    Frank Clark

    Juju Smith-Schuster

    Juan Thornhill

    Andrew Wylie

    Khalen Saunders

    Michael Burton

Frank Clark is a big loss but Orlando Brown is a huge one. He did an incredible job protecting Mahomes' blind side.

They've replaced them both immediately with Charles Omenihu and Jawaan Taylor.

"Incredible" is overstating Brown I think, he allowed more pressures than any OT in the league (yes, Mahomes holds the ball a lot) and was way down the rankings for pass blocking. Better the devil you know of course but there's a reason why the Chiefs didn't give him the contract he wanted and moved to Taylor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,942 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well he must have had a bad first half of the season because he was the best OT in the second half and he was outstanding in the playoffs.

Foster Moreau diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I hope he makes a full recovery, hopefully he can get back on the field.

Absolutely - hopefully its an early diagnosis and he makes a full recovery

Some under the radar NFL news that may impact some Irish fans this week, owners meeting shot down the idea of allowing networks to move games to Thursday night at 10 days notice. Got rejected due to the argument that fans like us who plan trips stateside to watch games could have our travel plans ruined.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,942 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It'd be bad for business for them all. There'd be a social media campaign about something like that which would affect sponsorship and their reputation which could lead to a slight reduction in the value of their asset which is all they care about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

Unfortunately, it wasn't shot down, just tabled. They're very close to getting the votes for it so they're hoping to turn a few more owners in time for a meeting later in the year.

You'd hope they wouldn't go through with it due fans travelling, along with the obvious player safety issues, but any negative fan blowback from changes is far outweighed by the potential additional money that would come in from future network deals. Networks don't want to pay premium prices for primetime slots that could end up being regularly terrible.

Ravens fans here and I find this OBJ signing for 15 million quite bizarre. A very un-Raven like move, they just do not do this sort of thing.

I remember when they signed Anquan Boldin who was a fan favourite and should never have been released. The Steve Smith signing worked too! I looked it up, only 5´9" but a warrior on the field

But OBJ? Hmm that is a lot of cap space for a mercenary. A player should absolutely chase every dollar in a short career but I question if he even cares to perform now he is getting 13.38 million signing bonus. He has the money, it is banked. The Baltimore WR corps is poor and has been for many years but not a fan of this move.

Surprising move by the Ravens for sure, that said if they can get OBJ, Andrews and Bateman on the field healthy together that could be a very decent group, and we know they’ll have a good run game as well.

its so unlike how they’ve operated in recent years that I wonder was this done to placate Lamar? Very expensive olive branch if that’s the case.
