I was told end of March. No specific dates.

This morning, on the way to Dublin, coming from the Galway side, I saw a truck which amongst other cars, had a Toyota bZ4X too. Exactly my colour, precious metal.... Who knows....

I still don't like the pile of crap but I'm old enough to remember how the rapidgate fuss on Leaf 40 roared into life......

Lads were calling for buybacks, recalls and predicting doomsday scenarios.....

5 years later and Leaf 40s are still driving around and even still been sold new.

5 years ago the Leaf had no real competition and it didn't cost 50k-60k. Should the Leaf be the norm now I wouldn't drive an EV. Probably it suits some but not me. Probably as a 2nd car in the family but not even then.

Model Y RWD will do 360 kms even at motorway speeds for majority of journey

So after one month of use, my opinion.

At 80 percent charge, when a/c or heater is on, car shows 200km range. That is not acceptable.

Everybody who booked are waiting for their delivery at the end of March. I would advice you to ask your dealer whether there will be any improvement after May software update; otherwise I will advice you to cancel your booking. Every 5 minutes, when the car is idle, range decreases. In Ireland, from my use of the car around 60 hours in a week, either a/c or heater need to be turned on for a comfortable ride.

From the above guy's YouTube reviews and looking at other videos, I would advice you to cancel your booking and book for a Tesla Model Y, though you may have to wait for few more months.

I will wait until May and planning to return the car because 200km range at 80 percent is unacceptable.

Jesus that's some change in opinion from a few weeks ago and very unexpected given your previous praise of Toyota. If such a devoted fan isn't happy then I think many others are going to be very very disappointed.

that's some change in opinion from a few weeks ago

    from a few days ago.....

@vimalandrew hopefully you can get rid fairly pronto..... especially if the May update doesn't change a whole lot!!!! I'd wait until then at least, and see what Bjorn has to say when he gets another crack at the range test & 1,000km challenge, but I suspect it won't get a whole lot better....

Software update might give it a bit more range, but it'll do feck all for the terrible efficiency!

The thing is that at 80 percent charge, range us around 215km when ac or heater on. Then for every 10km I ride, range decreases by 14km. Since I am charging outside, it is unaffordable for me. My toyota yaris cost me 80 euros in a week. This one costs 90 euros.

Was the range and charging issues not known when the car came out before people started ordering? I know orders were on hold or whatever but the car has been out for a while now?

It really came to light around the time of the recall. To be honest if I had a preorder that's when I would have backed out.

It's an awful lot of money for something that Vim can't really on and I do have sympathy for him. Unfortunately he bought into the hype and believed what the dealer was telling him.

I think he could be able to move it on now without losing to much money but he'd need to move fast before the poor range issues are well known amongst Toyota buyers (I don't think you'll have anybody swapping from another EV brand to the BZ) and your market drops even more.

You've a very strong case for going back to your dealer and asking them to take the car back! They would have no problem moving it on quickly at very close to retail price. That car would be fine for plenty of people but clearly does not work for you. I'm not sure how your PCP would be affected or what car you could get instead and when but it might be your best option.

@80% charge, as you say, the range is around 215k with all bells ans whistles on. And this would represent the worst case scenario, unless you're flying on the motorway with 120km/h.

If this is correct, then a full charge would bring another roughly 55km. Adding the 30-40 that will be released after the update this woukd mean a range of at least 300km using the heating, on cold enough weather.

Aren't we back to square one when all this was already known?

I'm not playing neither pro nor against the car and I am one of the ones hoping to get it at the end of March, if my dealer told me the truth.

My own circumstances are that I need to drive from Galway to Dublin once a week so that leaves me in the position where charging fully at home won't bring me back home unless I use public charging. However, I'm OK with it, I'm expecting it, I'm taking it in account (I manged 5 years with a 24kwh Leaf, no Dublin trip though, with absolutely zero problems and 26k km a year).

EVs are not suitable to everyone at present so careful planning need to be done before such purchase, but for those who it is suitable is a great purchase.

I just need minimum fan and 19 degree temperature.

I drive 90 percent in residential areas where max speed is 60kmh.

Today morning when I started at 9, it shows,

    IMG-20230311-WA0001.jpeg

    At around 1pm, it shows

    IMG-20230311-WA0006.jpeg

    So I traveled 2203-2112=91km

    Range shows 214-105=109km difference

It's okay, range is not declining that much.

Vim I think I see your problem... You're driving upside down so no wonder you're efficiency is poor 🤦‍♂️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,208 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

So at 80% is was showing 214km range, and a 91km drive brought it to down by roughly half to 105km range, so it looks like you used about 40% to drive 91km, which would mean at 100% the range would be about 227km, and that’s driving locally and never going above 60km/h…..?

If the software update gives you back 15% (let’s be optimistic) of battery that was locked away in the buffer, that’ll bump the range up to maybe 260km…. That’s shockingly bad…

Whats it showing as your consumption in kWh/100km?

Seriously Andrew, I’d have that back to the dealer asap to be either checked out, or returned and your money back in your pocket… order something much better and drive a sh1t box for a few weeks/months until you can get into something proper like a Tesla, Kia, Hyundai…

91 real km driven over a span of 5h and 20 minutes. That gives an average speed of about 17-18 km/h.

You have "lost" 18 km in the range displayed due to idling when heating was used. That is not bad at all I think.

And also, possibly, due to the short distances travelling between your deliveries, the range would be negatively impacted?

Have you attempted a trip of maybe 90-100km long to see what the numbers are?

That isn't bad at all especially for this time of year, anything in the 20's is good considering the type of driving you're doing. Is that since you got the car or just the latest charge?

Now its exactly one month and my car meter reading shows mileage of 2447 km.

I can see from my ESB app that I charged for 583 KWh.

I always use minimum fan and 19 degree temperature.

Now tell me whether the car is okay or not. 90 percent of the driving was in residential areas.

Your range will greatly improve once the heating season is over @vimalandrew

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭eagerv

If my maths is correct that is about 23.8kWh/100km. But that figure includes charging losses, which the car's computer will not show. Assuming 10% charging losses, then your actual figure is probably about 21.6kWh/100km. Not great, but not terrible either for a lot of stop/start driving without a heat pump. I would imagine my Model 3 for similar driving (Driven smoothly) would show somewhere around 13 to 15kWh/100km at this time of year.

I think the thoughts about my Yaris hybrid is hunting me. It gave me 22km per litre of petrol no matter cold, or icy, summer, or heater or air conditioner turned on, residential or motorways, not driving for hours. It gave me that range. Here I am charging from outside and it costs me 60 cents per unit. I will think of asking my landlord to install a ev charger then it may cost me only 21 cents in night charging.

Now in carzone, I can see 5 bz4xs are in sale. It looks like some people have returned the car back. Three of them have driven for more than 1000 km. Not sure people are returning it and I should do that or not or should I wait until May when there is a software update. Last week only 2 of them were in carzone.

Go back and have a strong chat with your dealer who sold you the car, the longer you leave it the harder the chat will be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 179 ✭✭petronelduca

Those are likely demo models from the dealers.

ODO 17 km. Probably moved repeatedly for very short distances during the delivery process.

That pic you posted of a Model 3 efficiency is the first 17km of the cars life, so will be almost entirely maneuvering onto ships, transporters from/to compounds. Not exactly normal driving.
