Hasn't been a show for a few weeks for some reason but listened to the end of year show earlier. One particularly memorable line was:

The Toy Show Appeal raised millions.....to pay for the losses of Toy Show The Musical.

    🤣

yeah I enjoyed the Tommy T one too about us all being bet down 😂 and to send more Ukrainians. Some food sketches. I enjoyed it.

I checked Radio1 this evening at 6:30pm, is Callan on these days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 276 ✭✭stopthevoting

No, there was a one-hour New Year's Day special, but the last weekly episode was on 9th December.

I think last year it returned in February until May, and then again in October until December.

That’s fair enough I guess. There’s a good bit of work in putting a show together.

I doubt Callan writes much, or indeed any, of the material these days. Presume there’s a group of angry failed comedians doing freelance writing to keep the lights on in the bedsit. Maybe he should pick up the pen again - the show is about as funny as the vet telling you it’s time to consider euthanasia for your companion for the past 15 years.

You should analyse what it is that makes you laugh Doc and go find somebody who fits the criteria you require.

I'd love to hear who does if you ever find somebody, I can garuntee there will be people who don't agree, because comedy is subjective.

They new year show was really good, just as well I don’t have a dog. I laughed a good bit during it

Callan is about as funny as discovering your wife is sleeping with your brother. He’s also a useless impressionist. His writing team should consider any other career apart from comedy writing.

In your opinion right? Sorry to hear about your wife. 😉

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Of course in my opinion. I’m sure people with a blunt and undeveloped sense of humour might find some of the broad stroke humour and incredibly awful impersonations to be amusing. I mean people find things like QI and Mrs Browns Boys to be funny. Takes all sorts. It’s objectively true though that Callan isn’t funny, his writing team ran out of ideas years ago, and impersonators are at the very lowest rung of the comedy ladder.

    'objectively'????

Clearly his ratings and sell out shows disprove your theory Doc.

    Look up what 'objectively' means.

Nathan Carter sells out tours but he’s still shíte. Popularity is no indicator of quality.

Still struggling with 'objectively' I see. 😁

Why don't you give us your subjective opinion of who is better, who tickles the Doc's funny bone?

Wouldn’t worry too much about the rise of AI and Machine Learning if it makes such basic errors in recommending new podcasts to me. I’d rather listen to Bob Geldof narrate the extended edition of his autobiography than listen to Callan’s Kicks.

That'd be google knowing you love talking about him Doc.

Was on the Apple Podcast app. I do listen to a lot of comedy podcasts so maybe they’ve mistakenly categorised Callan’s Kicks as comedy or something.

I’d rather go deaf than listen to Callan.

It's great to see a decent skin like Callan doing well for himself. Some achievement to be on tv and radio for years. Seems like a positive and grounded chap - you can't imagine he spends his day complaining on boards about absolutely everything like some muppets. Decent amount of money, tupping all round him, doing a job he enjoys

Ya agree - I enjoy the show, always get a giggle whenever I stumble across it and he can be very cutting, to both sides. It's a satire show, not an impressionist show, so what if the voices are not bang on.

There are more than two sides.

Hmm.. The latest offering didn’t touch the Shinners if I listened correctly.

Maybe the ‘Front seat passenger’ had a wee word?

I’ve no issues with any political allegiances he might have - lots of barstoolers up around the border.

The issue I have with him is that he’s an absolutely dreadful impressionist. He’s so bad he has to call out who he’s doing each time - “Michael, it’s me Leo” etc.

And whoever does the writing for his show should really consider doing anything else apart from writing “comedy”. About as funny as telling your children that the family cat was ran over by a truck.

    That made me “LOL!”

C'mon Doc, tell us who makes you giggle?

We know your nadir, tell us who your high pointers are.

Not sure what relevance it is who I find funny to be honest. Like I’d rather listen to a Blindboy podcast that listen to Callan’s Kicks and that’s saying something. The two times I’ve had to listen to it in the past year I was struck by just how monumentally unfunny it was. Having to get a filling on the chair was actually preferable to listening to that utter scutter in the waiting room.

The writing was actually tragically bad - as I said, whoever the writing team is need to consider doing anything else with their lives apart from suffering under the illusion they are funny and can write comedy sketches.

That Callan is an appalling mimic and impressionist is widely accepted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,730 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Well sadly, Callan and his writing team seem to continue to do well. So I dare say your advice will fall on deaf eats. 'Appalling' is not really apropriate either. The satire comes first with Callan IMO and the immpressions are secondary and ok - to very good IMO.

Can’t imagine there’s much money in writing piss poor comedy sketches for the likes of Callan. Maybe enough to share a bedsit in The Liberties and buy a few cans of cheap lager and a packet of Amber Leaf.

Well again, that really is between him and his writers.
